Face Off - Patrick Ramsey
|
High Side by David Dodds
Patrick Ramsey was thrown into the fire last year because HC Steve Spurrier wanted desperately to show the world he could be successful with the Fun-N-Gun in the NFL. Steve Spurrier tried Matthews and Weurffel, but in the end he knew his best at hope of winning in the future was to let Ramsey get his snaps in. It also showed ownership what was needed to be successful - Solid offensive guards and better wide receivers. Despite terrible QBs, a shaky offensive line and scrubs at WR, the Redskins threw the ball 559 times last season. And Spurrier would have liked to throw it even more. But with an overall team QB rating of 71.5, many drives were stopped before their time.
So what changed to think that Patrick Ramsey is headed for a big year?
Well for starters the Redskins added the following:
- RG Randy Thomas - Free agent from the NY Jets
- LG Dave Fiore - Free agent from San Francisco 49ers
- LG Lennie Friedman - Free agent from Denver Broncos
- FB Trung Canidate - Free agent from St. Louis Rams
- WR Laveranues Coles - Free agent from the NY Jets
- WR Chad Morton - Free agent from the NY Jets
- WR Taylor Jacobs - Drafted
Talk about a commitment to implement the Fun-N-Gun offense! Strength at guard + better receivers will make a significant difference for the Redskins this year. And Patrick Ramsey is going to show the world how much fun it can be in an offense that will throw the ball all the time.
Low Side by Chris Smith
Patrick Ramsey is a talented young quarterback with a good future. However there
are reasons why I am reluctant to rank him too high (currently #22 on my list).
One of the reasons is his lack of ability in regards to running with the ball.
He isn't much of a threat to add fantasy points using his legs and will likely
have minimal rushing yardage on the season. Another reason for concern is how
erratic he was as a rookie in 2002. He had good moments and awful moments and
that could likely continue this season. The final concern I have for Ramsey
is simply that he is playing for the notorious 'Captain Hook' and who knows
how many games he will finish and how many Rob Johnson will mop up for the Skins.
Positives
- Young and talented
- Playing in a explosive offensive system
- Great, young receiving core
Negatives
- Still very inexperienced
- Coach Steve Spurrier is famous for using different quarterbacks
- Has to play the Giants, Eagles and Cowboys twice who feature excellent defensive
backs
- Won't add many points with his rushing ability
Final Thoughts
In a dynasty league, Ramsey moves up my rankings. However, I am leery of
drafting him as a fantasy starter this season. He is only a second year player
who didn't see a ton of playing time last year. He will improve significantly
but I simply don't see him exceeding 3,700 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns
and 100 rushing yards if he can stay healthy all 16 games and if Coach Spurrier
will let him play the entire season. I'll let somebody else take a chance on
him unless he is available later on in the draft.
