Week 6 Players in the News

The Latest News

Quarterback

*** Saturday Update *** QB Tommy Maddox (PIT) says he is ready to play. He will get the start (rather than Charlie Batch) if Ben Roethlisberger can not go on Sunday.

Running Back

*** Saturday Update *** RB Thomas Jones (CHI) Continues to improve after a good practice Friday and looks like he could start Sunday. According to Brad Biggs from the Chicago Sun Times, Jones "looks like a real possibility to play, despite rampant reports earlier in the week that he would miss up to two games." Chicago has a 1 p.m. start Sunday so we'll have official word for him well before kickoffs in our Sunday Updates. It's encouraging to see improvement for him and we're liking what we see. Said Jones, ""It's a crucial game,'' Jones said. "We need this game for later on in the season if we want to make it into the playoffs... With the distractions we've had this week, I think a lot of guys are just ready to play. I want to be out there and make plays and help us win.''

*** Saturday Update *** RB Julius Jones (DAL) Didn't participate fully in team practices this week and it's looking like the team will start Tyson Thompson. Said coach Bill Parcells of Jones, "I probably wouldn't be too comfortable with his experience level, without practicing," Parcells said. "I think, generally speaking, players need to practice some to have a chance for success." Anthony Thomas will also see work.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Julius Jones (DAL) Didn't participate fully in team practices this week and it's looking like the team will start Tyson Thompson. Dallas has an early game tomorrow and we'll have official word for you in the Sunday Updates well before kickoff.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Cory Schlesinger (DET) will sit out again this week. The team hopes he will have another solid week of practice and then be ready to return to the field in week seven.

*** Saturday Update *** RB James Mungro (IND) practiced on Saturday but is unlikely to see action in week six.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Fred Taylor (JAX) remains a game time decision. Jacksonsville is a 1 p.m. start Sunday so we'll have the official word for you well before kickoff.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Michael Pittman (TB) has been added to the team’s injury report as questionable with an injured shoulder. He was not on the injury report Friday. With Cadillac Williams iffy, this could put the Tampa running back situation in a bind. Earnest Graham is the #3 RB and would see time if Pittman and Williams were limited. Tampa Bay has a 1 p.m. start Sunday so we'll have official word for you before kickoff.

Wide Receiver

*** Saturday Update *** WR Roy Williams (DET) Looks like he'll sit Sunday. Detroit has an early game so we'll have official word for you in the Sunday Updates well before kickoff.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Terrell Owens (PHI) said on his weekly radio show that if he had it to do over again, he would not have played in last year’s Super Bowl: "I wouldn't have risked my career. I felt like I went over and beyond the call of duty for the team. With the contract situation, I think that my performance speaks for itself. For me being dedicated and trying to get on the field, I thought, would speak volumes."

*** Saturday Update *** WR Hines Ward (PIT) remains a game time decision. We're starting to get a little worried about him. He doesn't sound like a guy that is playing. "I remember what happened to Plax last year," Ward said, referring to former receiving mate Plaxico Burress, who missed five of the final six games last season with a hamstring injury. "He had the same thing and he ended up missing five games... I have to be real smart about it," Ward said. "I can't risk an injury where I'll miss half the season. But, at the same time, I want to be out there. It's an important game for us and I want to be out there competing." Pittsburgh has a 1 p.m. start though so we'll have official word for you early in the Sunday Updates tomorrow.

Quarterback

*** Friday Update *** QB Michael Vick (ATL) practiced all week and maintains that he will start in week six.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Michael Vick (ATL) practiced again on Thursday and keeps saying that he will play in week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Michael Vick (ATL) practiced Wednesday with the team, taking a good portion of snaps during practice. Vick did not wear a knee brace, but did wear a sleeve over his sprained right knee. For his part, Vick says he will play: “I think I will be playing on Sunday. I have to continue to treat my knee and make sure that it is nice and sturdy when I get out there." Even though backup Matt Schaub tossed three TDs against the Patriots, HC Jim Mora is eager to see Vick on the field. "I've only been here for three games that he hasn't started, and we're 0-3 in them," Mora said. "Mike did more today than he did at any time last week. We're hopeful that by the end of the week we'll be able to upgrade him and he can play this week, but we'll see." Vick added that he will push his knee more Thursday. Based on Wednesday's practice, he said "I feel good, a lot better than last week."

QB Michael Vick (ATL) says he is on target to play in week six. “Today was the day I came out 100% as far as putting pressure on it and cutting. There's still a little pain. If I was feeling this way last week I'd have been able to play,” said Vick on Tuesday.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Kyle Boller (BAL) will not play in week six.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Kelly Holcomb (BUF) worked with the first team in practice Thursday and even though the team has not named a starter, it's looking like it'll be Holcomb again.

QB Kelly Holcomb (BUF) has not yet officially been named as the team’s starting QB in week six, but it would be a shock to see HC Mike Mularkey return to J.P. Losman.

QB Jake Delhomme (CAR) battled a thigh injury in Sunday's game. Said coach John Fox, "It was bothering him but not to the point where he felt like he had to come out of the game. It is probably a little more sore today than it was yesterday. When it happened, he was limping around pretty good, and we were getting ready to get ready if we had to make that move (change quarterbacks). But he felt fine and looked O.K. after that, so it loosened up. He spent a lot of time on the sideline keeping it loose, because you don't want that to tighten up." He should be fine for this week.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Rex Grossman (CHI) is still out.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Jeff Garcia (DET) is out of his cast and throwing the ball, but he is not going to be available this week. He's making fast progress though.

QB Mike McMahon (PHI) had exploratory arthroscopic knee surgery on Monday. The team isn't sure what's going on with his knee but he's having pain and the MRI results were not clear.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Charlie Batch (PIT) might not be the team’s starter in week six as regular backup Tommy Maddox has been upgraded to probable. HC Bill Cowher is not expected to name a starter until just before game-time on Sunday.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Charlie Batch (PIT) has been named the team’s starter for week six (by default) after injuries to starter Ben Roethlisberger and usual backup Tommy Maddox. Roethlisberger is doubtful to play in week six while Maddox is questionable.

*** Saturday Update *** QB Tommy Maddox (PIT) says he is ready to play. He will get the start (rather than Charlie Batch) if Ben Roethlisberger can not go on Sunday.

*** Friday Update *** QB Tommy Maddox (PIT) will likely be the starter in week six although look for the Steelers to make a decision Saturday.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Tommy Maddox (PIT) practiced again on Thursday and has been upgraded to probable for week six. That likely means that he rather than Charlie Batch will get the start in place of Ben Roethlisberger, but HC Bill Cowher is not expected to name a starter until just before game-time.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Tommy Maddox (PIT) practiced on Wednesday, but he is questionable to play in week six. The team has named Charlie Batch as their starter against the Jaguars.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) did not practice on Thursday. While he has not yet been ruled out, he remains unlikely to play in week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) did not practice on Wednesday and right now, is looking like a long shot to play in week six. We'll know more later this week.

QB Ben Roethlisberger (PIT) has a hyperextended left knee and a bone bruise (which is a far better diagnosis than what was feared). “It looked bad,” said HC Bill Cowher after Monday’s game. After hearing the news on Tuesday, he remarked that “It’s a deep sigh of relief.” Roethlisberger has not been ruled out for week six. In related news, backup QB Tommy Maddox has not been ruled out for week six either.

*** Friday Update *** QB Drew Brees (SD) practiced all week and is expected to start as normal in week six even though he's listed as questionable with the calf.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Drew Brees (SD) was a bit limited in Thursday’s practice, but he is expected to start as normal in week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** QB Drew Brees (SD) was limited on Wednesday with a calf injury. He's listed as questionable but says he'll start as normal in week six. Watch closely.

QB Alex Smith (SF) will continue as the team’s starting QB.

*** Thursday Update *** QB Brian Griese (TB) (amid some speculation that HC Jon Gruden is pondering a QB switch) has taken responsibility for mental mistakes while addressing his teammates after a team meeting on Wednesday. While Griese did not comment on the meeting, some teammates appreciated the comments. Later Griese had these comments to the media: "I can make better decisions," he said. "I need to stop turning the ball over. I've put our defense in difficult situations, and I need to make more plays. Those three things are what the quarterback is responsible for, and that's what I'm working on."

*** Friday Update *** QB Steve McNair (TEN) did not practice on Friday and has been added to the injury report as questionable with back spasms. However, the team believes he will play against the Bengals. Said coach Jeff Fisher, "He has a sore back with mild back spasms and tightness, so we held him out of practice... He is actually much better now than he was this morning."

*** Thursday Update *** QB Steve McNair (TEN) will likely continue to practice lightly on Wednesdays. Said coach Jeff Fisher: "We like to get him each day. Thursday and Friday we really pick the plan up. He threw a little bit yesterday. His arm is not the problem; he is just a little stiff and a little sore. I’d like to maybe get out of that routine a little bit. Considering where we’ve been in the past, we’ll definitely take a full Thursday and a full Friday."

Running Back

*** Friday Update *** RB Alan Ricard (BAL) did not practice all week and is at best a game-time decision for week six.

*** Friday Update *** RB Chester Taylor (BAL) practiced on Friday and is expected to play in week six.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Chester Taylor (BAL) practiced on Thursday and is expected to play in week six.

*** Friday Update *** RB Stephen Davis (CAR) practiced on Friday and is expected to start as normal in week six.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Stephen Davis (CAR) practiced on Thursday and says he will play in week six. "I practiced. I'm having no problems, man”, said Davis. “I'm fine. I haven't had any setbacks or anything. Soreness here and there, but I have soreness in both my knees, my back and my shoulders, too."

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Stephen Davis (CAR) still has the confidence of HC John Fox despite his low 3.2 YPC this season. "Stephen's fine," Fox said on Tuesday. "(A low rushing average) is not just all the running back." However, Davis did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable for week six with an injury knee.

*** Friday Update *** RB DeShaun Foster (CAR) did not practice all week and has been downgraded to doubtful. It is extremely unlikely that he will play in week six.

*** Thursday Update *** RB DeShaun Foster (CAR) did not practice on Thursday and remains questionable for week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB DeShaun Foster (CAR) did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable to play in week six with an injured knee.

*** Friday Update *** RB Brad Hoover (CAR) practiced on Friday and is expected to play in week six.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Brad Hoover (CAR) practiced on Thursday and barring a setback should be able to play in week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Brad Hoover (CAR) did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable to play in week six with an injured shoulder.

*** Friday Update *** RB Rod Smart (CAR) practiced on Friday but is not expected to play in week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Rod Smart (CAR) will not play in week six.

*** Friday Update *** RB Cedric Benson (CHI) will start in week six if Thomas Jones can not play. However, Jones returned to practice on Friday. By all accounts, he looked pretty good but will be a game-time decision.

RB Cedric Benson (CHI) may start for the team in week six if Thomas Jones isn't able to go in the game against Minnesota. Adrian Peterson will see work as well.

*** Friday Update *** RB Thomas Jones (CHI) practiced on Friday and will be a game-time decision for week six. "I haven't run since last week and it was definitely a lot better than I thought it would feel," Jones said after practice. "It was a lot more stable. We'll just have to see how I feel on Sunday." "He looked good," HC Lovie Smith said. "He hasn't practiced all week, but it's not like he was limping or anything like that. I thought he looked good and we'll kind of take it from there. Friday isn't a full padded practice or anything like that, so there's only so much we do. But he did well with what we asked him to do today." Jones spent several hours every day this week receiving treatment for his injury. "I feel like that's part of my job too," he said. "I don't mind coming over here as many times as I need to. First of all, I don't like being hurt. Regardless of if I was playing football or not, I definitely would like to be functioning as soon as I could." Jones isn't sure how the injury will limit his ability to start and stop and make quick cuts. "I'll have to wait until Sunday to see," he said. "I haven't really run that much. I ran today in practice. You saw I was running and it didn't look like I was limping. I have two more days to rest and recover and then I'll see how I feel."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Thomas Jones (CHI) did not practice on Thursday and remains questionable to play in week six. There are some reports that he is not expected to go, but they have not been corroborated by the team.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Thomas Jones (CHI) was limited on Wednesday and is questionable to play in week six. Cedric Benson will get the start if Jones can't go.

RB Thomas Jones (CHI) is day to day with a mild lateral collateral ligament (LCL) knee sprain. The sprain is actually a stretching (but not tearing) of the ligament. He'll be evaluated this week. If he can't go, Cedric Benson and Adrian Peterson will carry the load. "Cedric is next in the rotation at the running back position. But I was pleased with what Adrian Peterson did.''

*** Thursday Update *** RB Rudi Johnson (CIN) practiced on Thursday and is expected to play in week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Rudi Johnson (CIN) did not practice on Wednesday but is expected to play in week six.

RB Lee Suggs (CLE) will miss four week after fracturing his thumb in week five.

*** Friday Update *** RB Julius Jones (DAL) did not practice on Friday and will be a game-time decision for week six. "I'm just going to wait to the last minute," Parcells said. "There's no use in not taking advantage of all your time. I probably wouldn't be too comfortable with his experience level without practicing," Parcells said of Jones. "I think generally speaking, players need to practice some to have a chance at success. Now there are exceptions. But generally speaking, I would like to have a player practice before he plays." Parcells said he's never played a running back who didn't practice at least once in the week leading up to a game. If Jones can't go Sunday, rookie Tyson Thompson will probably replace him. Parcells admitted that Thompson might hit the hole a little faster than Jones, but added, "it's not always the right hole."

*** Thursday Update *** RB Julius Jones (DAL) did not practice on Thursday and remains 50/50 to play in week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Julius Jones (DAL) did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable for week six with a high ankle sprain. According to the Dallas Morning News, the team is preparing as if he will not play. We’re not sure how much it matters, but owner Jerry Jones believes the player Jones will play. "He's a quick healer," Jerry Jones said. "He's fast and young, and I think there's a good chance he'll play.” If Jones doesn’t play, Tyson Thompson (who carried 16 times in relief against the Eagles) will likely start with Anthony Thomas (who was brought in to be the primary backup but hasn’t seen much action at all) getting some looks as well.

RB Julius Jones (DAL) looks like he might be questionable for week six with his injured ankle. That makes Tyson Thompson worth a look if you are in need of a RB this week. Coach Bill Parcells said he held Jones out of the second half because "I didn't think he had the right look." His status will be determined later in the week.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Tyson Thompson (DAL) has received the majority of first team snaps in practice this week and looks to be the starter if Julius Jones can not go in week six. "I feel like I am getting more confidence and, hopefully, that is the same with coach Parcells," Thompson said. "We are trying to maintain without Julius. Hopefully, he will be ready. But anything I can do to help the team is great. I am looking forward to the opportunity to show what I can do." Officially, the team has not announced whether Thompson or Anthony Thomas would start in place of Jones.

*** Friday Update *** RB Tatum Bell (DEN) practiced all week and is expected to play in week six.

RB Tatum Bell (DEN) is still the #2 RB but he's making a push for #1. "I think Tatum just has to stay healthy," Head Coach Mike Shanahan said. "He's played well when he's played and there's been some setbacks, but as long as he stays healthy, he'll keep on getting better." Said Tatum Bell, "Mike is still the starter, so, obviously he's doing something I'm not doing," Bell said. "I just have to keep working. I don't want to just be a 'one-game wonder.' I want to be the starter."

*** Saturday Update *** RB Cory Schlesinger (DET) will sit out again this week. The team hopes he will have another solid week of practice and then be ready to return to the field in week seven.

*** Friday Update *** RB Cory Schlesinger (DET) practiced again on Friday, but he remains a game-time decision for week six.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Cory Schlesinger (DET) practiced again on Thursday but is still likely a game-time decision for week six.

RB Cory Schlesinger (DET) is expected to return to full practice this week.

RB Ahman Green (GB) is expected to return as the team’s starting RB for their next game (in week seven).

*** Friday Update *** RB Jonathan Wells (HOU) practiced on Friday and is expected to play in week six.

*** Saturday Update *** RB James Mungro (IND) practiced on Saturday but is unlikely to see action in week six.

*** Friday Update *** RB James Mungro (IND) practiced on Friday but will be a game-time decision for week six.

*** Saturday Update *** RB Fred Taylor (JAX) remains a game time decision. Jacksonsville is a 1 p.m. start Sunday so we'll have the official word for you well before kickoff.

*** Friday Update *** RB Fred Taylor (JAX) did not practice on Friday and will be a game-time decision for week six. He is optimistic he'll play: ``I'm going to play,'' Taylor said Friday. ``I was limited, but for the most part, I believe I'll make it and will play.'' When asked about being listed as questionable, he said, ``That's just something they put on paper because the league says you have to do that,'' Taylor said. ``They could have started me out at questionable, it wouldn't have made a difference. That's just procedures that are mandatory by the league.''

*** Thursday Update *** RB Fred Taylor (JAX) missed a portion of practice on Thursday and has been downgraded to questionable for week six. The Jaguars are hopeful that he’ll be able to play. However, downgraded players usually do not go on Sunday, so Taylor likely needs to improve in order to face the Steelers.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Fred Taylor (JAX) practiced fully on Wednesday and is expected to start as normal in week six.

RB Ricky Williams (MIA) has rejoined the team after serving his four-game suspension.

*** Friday Update *** RB Moe Williams (MIN) practiced on Friday but looks like a game-time decision for week six.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Moe Williams (MIN) partially participated in Thursday’s practice but is expected to play in week six.

*** Friday Update *** RB Corey Dillon (NE) partially participated in Friday’s practice and (in Belichick’s latest attempt to make a mockery of the NFL injury report) was downgraded to questionable for week six. He is officially a game-time decision, but reports from the Patriots have him playing against the Broncos.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Kevin Faulk (NE) is still out, and it could be worse than first thought. According to sources with knowledge of the injury, the broken foot suffered by RB Kevin Faulk is very serious and could potentially affect his career. Faulk suffered a broken bone in his heal. He still hasn't been placed on injured reserve, and the Patriots continue to explore their options, signing RB Amos Zereoue two weeks ago and working out former Broncos RB Quentin Griffith on Monday.

RB Jesse Chatman (NO) has been acquired by the team in a trade from Miami. He's an interesting player and could challenge Antowain Smith for playing time but we see Smith as the guy there for now. If Smith falters, this would likely be a running back by committee approach with Smith, Chatman and Aaron Stecker.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Deuce McAllister (NO) has been placed on the injured reserve list which officially ends his season.

RB Deuce McAllister (NO) is seeking a third opinion on his knee but it's not looking good. Saints coach Jim Haslett said McAllister got a second opinion yesterday in San Antonio. He'll get a third opinion from Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., later this week. "If that's the case, a torn ligament, he's out for the year," Haslett said. "I feel bad first of all for Deuce. He's worked hard to get to this point. He's a great football player."

RB Antowain Smith (NO) is set to be the team’s starting RB after the loss of Deuce McAllister. However, New Orleans traded for Jesse Chatman from Miami (he played with the Chargers in 2004), and they also have Aaron Stecker available. If Smith does not stand out, we could easily see a committee here.

*** Friday Update *** RB B.J. Askew (NYJ) practiced all week. He has been upgraded to probable and is expected to play in week six.

RB Derrick Blaylock (NYJ) will be out six to eight weeks with his broken foot.

RB Cedric Houston (NYJ) will be the team’s backup RB until Derrick Blaylock returns from injury (expected to be six to eight weeks).

*** Friday Update *** RB Curtis Martin (NYJ) has been removed from the injury report and will start as normal in week six.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Curtis Martin (NYJ) returned to practice as expected on Thursday and will start as normal in week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Curtis Martin (NYJ) did not practice on Wednesday but is expected to start as normal in week six. It is likely that Martin will sit out Wednesday practices for the remainder of the season in order to rest his body.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Duce Staley (PIT) is not likely to be active in week six and may not have much of an impact all season. "Duce, quite frankly, might not be 100 percent this whole year," HC Bill Cowher said. "He's working to get better, and at some point, we may need him. He understands the situation."

*** Friday Update *** RB Darren Sproles (SD) practiced on Friday and is expected to play in week six.

*** Friday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) practiced on Friday but remains a game-time decision for week six. Said coach Jon Gruden, “We’ll see how he is tomorrow, and then we’ll see how he is tomorrow night, and then we’ll see how he is at wakeup call on Sunday morning and we’ll see how he is when he gets to the stadium,” said Gruden. “I just can’t come out and say he’s not going to play; I can’t come out and say he’s going to play, and if he does play how many plays.”

*** Thursday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) worked out in pads Thursday, but he remains questionable for week six because of a sprained arch and a strained hamstring. “I wasn't limited too much, but I'm still being careful and smart about the whole thing,'' said Williams. HC Jon Gruden said Williams made some progress Thursday. “He's getting better, but he's still questionable,'' Gruden said. “He practiced a little more today. I think he's getting better, but he's not where he needs to be, if you ask me. Let's see how he is tomorrow.”

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Cadillac Williams (TB) was limited on Wednesday and is questionable to play in week six. Unless he improves greatly, he’ll likely be a game-time decision once again.

RB Cadillac Williams (TB) is not yet a sure bet to play in week six. “I can't say it's safe to say he'll play against Miami,” said HC Jon Gruden. “We're hoping we have the guy back. We need him - there's no question about that. If there’s a chance, he’ll make it happen.” Note that Williams will be facing the Miami Dolphins and former Auburn teammate Ronnie Brown. That’s not a game he wants to miss.

RB Chris Brown (TEN) is fine according to coach Jeff Fisher: "He’s running fine. He’s not behind, he’s not injured; he doesn’t have any problems. He’s doing fine. What is a little surprising at this point, after five weeks, is he doesn’t have any touchdowns. He doesn’t have any receiving or any rushing. He’s had two called back, which I don’t think either one of them should have been called back, but nevertheless, at this point he doesn’t have any touchdowns."

*** Friday Update *** RB Troy Fleming (TEN) did not practice on Friday and is a game-time decision for week six.

*** Friday Update *** RB Ladell Betts (WAS) did not practice all week and is not expected to play in week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Ladell Betts (WAS) did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable at best to play in week six.

*** Friday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) practiced on Friday and is expected to start as normal in week six.

*** Thursday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) was limited on Thursday, but he is still expected to start as normal in week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** RB Clinton Portis (WAS) did not practice on Wednesday but is expected to start as normal in week six.

Wide Receiver

*** Friday Update *** WR Roscoe Parrish (BUF) practiced all week but remains a game-time decision for week six.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Roscoe Parrish (BUF) practiced fully on Wednesday for the first time in ten weeks. On Thursday, however, he was limited. He is coming back from a broken wrist and has a chance to play in week six. Officially, he is a game-time decision, but it looks like he’ll need to improve to play on Sunday.

*** Friday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) did not practice on Friday. He was downgraded to doubtful and is not expected to play in week six.

*** Thursday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) did not practice again on Thursday and remains questionable for week six. It looks like Houshmandzadeh will be a game-time decision. He says he'll play but remember that we heard that last week as well.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh (CIN) did not practice on Wednesday and is questionable to return to action in week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Braylon Edwards (CLE) has been released from the hospital. He will not play in week six and the timetable for his return to the field is still unclear.

WR Braylon Edwards (CLE) is still in the hospital after surgery to remove an infection in his right arm. There are reports that he will miss eight weeks, but the team has not even commented on his week six status.

*** Friday Update *** WR Eddie Drummond (DET) did not practice all week and will be a game-time decision for week six.

*** Saturday Update *** WR Roy Williams (DET) Looks like he'll sit Sunday. Detroit has an early game so we'll have official word for you in the Sunday Updates well before kickoff.

*** Friday Update *** WR Roy Williams (DET) did not practice all week. It doesn’t look good for him, but he remains a game-time decision for week six.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Roy Williams (DET) did not practice on Thursday and remains iffy for week six. Friday’s practice will be big for Williams. If he can not go, he’ll likely sit out Sunday’s game against the Panthers.

WR Roy Williams (DET) is still day to day with his quad injury. He'll be evaluated later this week to see if he can go this week.

*** Friday Update *** WR Andre Johnson (HOU) did not practice on Friday and looks questionable at best to play in week six. However, he is officially a game-time decision.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Andre Johnson (HOU) did not practice on Thursday and reports are circulating that he will likely sit in week six. Johnson isn't limping and said he can do most things but that there is "bad pain" in this calf when he runs full speed.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Andre Johnson (HOU) was limited on Wednesday and is questionable to play in week six. If Johnson can get a hard practice in on Friday, then he’ll be more likely to play.

*** Friday Update *** WR Jerome Mathis (HOU) practiced on Friday and is expected to play in week six.

*** Friday Update *** WR Jimmy Smith (JAX) practiced on Friday and is expected to play in week six.

WR Ernest Wilford (JAX) will reportedly get more playing time as the team tries to give its passing game a boost. This is obviously an indication that Reggie Williams and Matt Jones are struggling.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Nate Burleson (MIN) will not play in week six.

WR Nate Burleson (MIN) is not expected to return to action in week six. It seems that his PCL sprain has healed, but the team now says his right shoulder is injured. According to HC Mike Tice, “The shoulder is what's holding him back right now and not the knee.”

*** Friday Update *** WR Troy Brown (NE) partially participated in Friday’s practice and (in Belichick’s latest attempt to make a mockery of the NFL injury report) was downgraded to questionable for week six. He will be a game-time decision.

*** Friday Update *** WR Joe Horn (NO) participated in most of Friday's work and says he expects to play in week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Joe Horn (NO) practiced on Wednesday but is still questionable to return to action in week six.

*** Friday Update *** WR Hines Ward (PIT) did not practice all week and is officially a game-time decision. He definitely wants to play against the Jaguars, but he will wait and test his hamstring on game day.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Hines Ward (PIT) did not practice again on Thursday and remains questionable. Usually, a player needs to have at least one practice under his belt in order to play that week, but Ward will likely not be subject to that requirement. “It’s case by case,” HC Bill Cowher said Thursday regarding Ward and Ben Roethlisberger. “Obviously, if you have somebody who hasn’t practiced all week, you have to take that into account. We are just going to look at all the circumstances and go from there.” Translation: If our studs can play on Sunday, they’ll play on Sunday.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Hines Ward (PIT) did not practice on Wednesday and is listed as questionable for week six with his injured hamstring. Barring a setback Ward is expected to play.

*** Friday Update *** WR Eric Parker (SD) did not practice on Friday. He is officially a game-time decision but is expected to play in week six.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Bobby Engram (SEA) will not play in week six.

WR Bobby Engram (SEA) will probably miss a "a few weeks" with his broken ribs according to coach Mike Holmgren.

*** Friday Update *** WR D.J. Hackett (SEA) practiced on Friday and is expected to play in week six. He was added to the injury report as probable with a sore hip.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Darrell Jackson (SEA) underwent surgery on his knee Wednesday. Doctor John Uribe said the lateral meniscus tear was worse than expected and there was also a loose flap of articular cartilage. The prognosis is that he will miss four to six weeks while recovering (with six being more likely).

WR Darrell Jackson (SEA) looks like he's going to go ahead with surgery Wednesday. “It’s my understanding that they are going to have the surgery on Wednesday,” coach Mike Holmgren said. “And then something could happen between now and Wednesday that changes, on occasion, where they change their mind.” It'll be arthroscopic surgery and he's expected to be back this season.

*** Friday Update *** WR Isaac Bruce (STL) is getting a little work in during practice, but he still is not expected to play in week six.

*** Friday Update *** WR Torry Holt (STL) did not practice on Friday and describes his health as “60%”. However, he says he expects to start against the Colts. Said Holt, "I expect to play... All this time I am getting off is good. It's giving me an opportunity to heal up, rest and all of that good stuff. Right now I feel like I'll be ready to play on Monday..."

*** Thursday Update *** WR Torry Holt (STL) did not practice on Thursday and remains questionable for week six. However, barring a setback it looks like Holt will be able to play.

*** Wednesday Update *** WR Michael Clayton (TB) will get more looks this week according to HC Jon Gruden. "We have to call his number more," Gruden said of Clayton. "It's our job to get him going in this offense, and we have to do a much better job, as a staff, and he has to work with us on that. He's got to play at another level."

WR Michael Clayton (TB) sounds like he may get more work. Coach Jon Gruden was asked if the team might considere resting Clayton as they did Cadillac Williams. “I haven’t given any thought to resting him,” said the coach. “We’ve given much thought this morning about doubling his workload this week. We need him, obviously, to be a big part of this offense. We realize he’s got some soreness but we feel like he’ll improve and be ready to go for the Dolphins.” Gruden also took some blame for Clayton's performance: “It’s got a lot to do with play design,” said Head Coach Jon Gruden of Clayton’s goose egg. “I take credit for some of that. We have to call his number more. He’s got to play to another level.”

*** Friday Update *** WR Drew Bennett (TEN) did not practice on Friday. However, the team believes he will play against the Bengals.

*** Thursday Update *** WR Drew Bennett (TEN) missed practice on Thursday. Coach Jeff Fisher only had this to say about Bennett: "Drew is resting today." He's still expected to play but obviously he's not 100%.

WR Drew Bennett (TEN) spoke about Bennett missing practice last week: "I think everybody needs to practice. We held Drew out because we felt that he would be better at gametime if we didn’t subject him to the pounding. We may have to hold him for a few more days this week. You’re never satisfied or comfortable when someone doesn’t practice, yet you know they’re going to play. There is always that uncertainty there as to how the timing will be and what in fact they did pick up and what they did not. For the most part, Drew picked everything up. Obviously he was very productive in the game."

Bruschi has received favorable reports from doctors but not final medical clearance, and others involved in the decision - including the team's lawyers and Bruschi's family - have not signed off on it. Bruschi said this summer he had no intention of coming back for the 2005 season. But the speed of his rehabilitation has made it possible for him to accelerate his schedule. Bruschi is eligible to return from the physically unable to perform list after the sixth week of the season, which starts on Monday. Bruschi was not available for comment on Friday. HC Bill Belichick said Friday he would leave any comment to Bruschi. "If Tedy has something to say, I'm sure he's perfectly capable of saying that himself," Belichick said. *** Friday Update *** TM New Orleans Saints (NO) The Saints have sold out their home game this week in San Antonio.

TM St. Louis Rams (STL) Coach Mike Martz will take a leave of absence as he tries to recuperate from the heart valve infection he's been battling. Assistant head coach Joe Vitt will be the interim head coach. Vitt is also the linebackers coach and fits the gruff, disciplined prototype you think of with a linebacker coach. Quite a difference from Martz. Vitt just joined the team in 2004. Offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild will be in charge of the offense and likely call the plays. Martz was famous for calling all the plays but Fairchild was obviously very involved. He's been with the Rams since 2003.
