Week 4 Early Injury Report

Quarterback

QB Tom Brady - NE

There are speculations in the local press that Brady (calf) could have a legit calf injury because his touch and velocity has been off in the early part of the season. Stay tuned to Footballguys.com's Players in the News this week to see how much Brady is able to practice. Also, remember that the Patriots manipulate the official injury reports so it is tough to evaluate how serious a real injury is with this club.

QB Drew Brees - NO

Brees banged up his left knee during the fourth quarter on Sunday, but was able to shake it off and play in the overtime period.

QB Aaron Brooks - FA

Brooks is not expected to play this coming week as he continues to rehab his sore right shoulder (rotator cuff injury).

QB Marc Bulger - FA

Bulger suffered a bruised rotator cuff on his right throwing arm but has not been ruled out for next week’s game at San Francisco. Kyle Boller would take over what's left of the passing game (Donnie Avery and Laurent Robinson were both injured on Sunday, too - Robinson was on crutches after the game) for St. Louis if Bulger is out for any length of time.

QB Matt Cassel - MIN

Cassel has several fractured bones in his foot, head coach Mike Zimmer said Sunday, September 21, after the game against the New Orleans Saints. Cassel is likely going to be off the field for an extended period and likely the year, and lose his starting job to rookie Teddy Bridgewater.

QB Kerry Collins - IND

Collins was reportedly forced out of the Sunday night football game due to a concussion - he's being evaluated further as of Monday morning. If he was concussed, Collins will have to pass the NFL-mandated baseline neurological tests before returning to football activities this week.

QB Brodie Croyle - FA

Croyle missed another game on Sunday due to his injured throwing shoulder (listed as out on Friday).

QB Daunte Culpepper - FA

According to reports, Culpepper apparently told former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon, a CBS Analyst, that his knee is not 100% yet. Coach Saban commented "He still doesn't have total rehabilitation to get to where he was before. Nobody knows if he will get back to that point, but there's certainly the possibility that he will. It usually takes more than a year."

QB Jay Cutler - CHI

Cutler had a mild sprain to his left ankle during the game and he received treatment following the game. He'll be evaluated further as the week goes along, but initially this doesn't look like a serious injury.

QB Jake Delhomme - HOU

Delhomme injured his right elbow (throwing arm) during the game on Sunday and did not return to action. He had a bandage wrapping the arm and it hung loosely at his side after the injury - it looks like David Carr could be running the show for at least this coming week. Delhomme will be evaluated further as the week goes along, but the team seems concerned about it. "I strained it," Delhomme said after the game. "I made a couple of throws on the next drive and it just didn't feel good. I don't know what it is. I hope everything is normal." Coach Fox had this to say after further examinations on Monday: What the doctors are telling me, it's a strained elbow. There are days until we play this week, so I can't rule anything, other than day to day." Delhomme and Steve Smith owners will want to monitor Delhomme's practice participation later during the week.

QB Jake Delhomme - HOU

Delhomme, who was unable to practice last week due to his injured ankle, was inactive on Sunday after being listed as doubtful.

Fiedler was knocked out of the game vs. Jacksonville due to a jammed right shoulder. He did not return to the game. Said Fiedler after the game "I kind of landed with my arm above my shoulder and I felt something go. I knew I wasn't going to be able to throw a football." An MRI is scheduled for Monday to further evaluate the injury. Coach Edwards indicated that results of the MRI won't be known until Tuesday, but that 3rd string QB Brooks Bollinger is expected to start the game vs. Baltimore this week.

Losman suffered a sprained knee during the first series on Sunday and is likely to be lost for at least a few weeks - he'll be evaluated further as the week goes along. "It was getting worse and worse by the seconds," Losman said. "I could stand the pain, but I couldn't deal with the weakness" in the knee.

QB Peyton Manning - DEN

Manning was out of practices last week and was listed as out on Friday (neck surgery/rehab) - he was inactive on Sunday night as expected. Owner Jim Irsay reportedly let some Super Bowl donors know that Manning won't practice again until December (if then), and that he is likely out for the season. Irsay later clarified in a tweet that Manning wasn't out 'for sure', but that Manning was month to month with an 'outside chance' to return in December.

QB Josh McCown - TB

McCown injured his left foot late in the first quarter and left for one play. He returned on the ensuing drive but was replaced by Culpepper during the second half. He injured his right foot last week, and also has a fractured index finger on his throwing hand. He'll be evaluated further as the week goes along.

QB Josh McCown - TB

McCown 'has a significant sprain' to his right (throwing hand) thumb. He'll see a hand specialist on Monday to explore his treatment options - McCown could miss a lot of time due to this injury. Stay Tuned to Footballguys.com's Players in the News for the latest regarding this developing situation at quarterback in Tampa Bay. McNabb has an array of injuries that are affecting him - his deeply bruised chest, for one thing, and now it appears he may have a sports hernia to play through. We'll keep you updated on all the latest through the week. Right now the team is calling this latest injury an "abdominal strain" - more testing is expected to further evaluate McNabb this week. Coach Reid said on Monday, "We'll see how he does (Tuesday) and how he comes back in Wednesday. He should be fine for the game. We have to get the soreness out."

QB Donovan McNabb - FA

McNabb remained in the locker room at the start of the second half on Sunday because of a chest injury, so Kevin Kolb ran the offense for five plays while McNabb received treatment. McNabb will be evaluated further as the week goes along. On Monday, coach Andy Reid commented "Do I think he'll be sore this week? Yeah. He's sore today and I think he'll get progressively better as the week goes on. He's got a contusion on his upper chest."

QB Donovan McNabb - FA

McNabb could return from his rib injury on Oct. 11 when the Eagles play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after their bye week. "I think he will, but we'll see how it goes," Eagles coach Andy Reid said yesterday.

QB Steve McNair - FA

McNair "may" have a foot injury, according to the Tennessean on Monday. The Titans are typically close-mouthed about players and injuries.

QB Steve McNair - FA

McNair was pulled after 3 quarters due to tenderness associated with his injured groin. "I could tell he was favoring it [his injured groin] a little bit," commented coach Billick after the game. Keep an eye on McNair's practice participation as the week goes along.

After the game, Pennington said the injury felt "similar" to the one that ended his season last year. An MRI is scheduled for Monday to further evaluate the injury. Coach Edwards indicated on Monday that the MRI results won't be available until Tuesday, and that 3rd string QB Brooks Bollinger is expected to start vs. Baltimore this week.

QB Chad Pennington - MIA

Pennington suffered a serious shoulder injury during the game on Sunday, forcing Chad Henne into the lineup. ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting Monday afternoon that Pennington suffered a torn capsule in his shoulder and will miss the rest of the season. Pennington is seeking a second opinion.

QB Patrick Ramsey - MIN

Ramsey was active but didn't play on Sunday (right elbow, probable on Friday).

QB Ben Roethlisberger - PIT

Roethlisberger was shaken up on a hard hit during the game vs. New England, slamming his left shoulder into the turf, but he was able to return to the game and threw the ball well despite the hit.

QB Ben Roethlisberger - PIT

Roethlisberger said his right hand, bandaged after the game, was stepped on but that his hand was "good" after an X-ray showed no breaks. Coach Mike Tomlin said he will have more tests today but "I think he's going to be fine. He's battered a little bit, he got hit quite a bit. I'll have more info in the morning. At this point it doesn't appear to be anything long term."

QB Tony Romo - DAL

Romo participated in the team's walkthrough Sunday, September 25th, and is expected to play in week three despite being listed as questionable due to his injured ribs. He was limited in practice on Friday according to the Saturday injury report. Romo is not putting himself at further risk by playing in the team's Monday Night Game according to an orthopedic surgeon. 'I don't think so,' said Dr. Mark Adickes. 'He just had a little bit of air between his lung and chest wall, a little crack in his rib. They'll pad it up. He'll be fine.'

QB Matt Schaub - OAK

Schaub banged up his shoulder during the game on Sunday, but stayed in the action and eventually threw four TD passes - he said after the contest that he'll be fine. Further evaluations are ongoing on Monday, but initial indications are that this is a contusion and not a big worry for fantasy owners. Schaub also lost a chunk of one ear during the game - 'I felt fine, You know, I just lost a little piece of my ear.' he commented after the contest.

QB Chris Simms - TEN

Simms underwent an emergency spleenectomy (his spleen was damaged and had to be removed) after the game on Sunday. No timetable has been set for his return at this early stage in his recovery, but it is certain that he won't play again for a long stretch during 2006 - 6 weeks is the minimum recovery time for such a surgical procedure. WR Michael Clayton commented "He was in the huddle at times muffling over his words and taking deep breaths in between calling plays because he couldn't talk. He was definitely dazed a little bit." On Monday Coach Gruden visited Simms and reported to the media afterwards that Simms was in good spirits and stated "He's gonna be okay." Tampa's new starter is rookie Bruce Gradkowski. Stated Gruden "That's one of the reasons we gave him extensive playing time in the preseason. I thought he did some very good things. He'll get a lot of work this week and we'll see what happens. We have a great schedule ahead of ourselves, 13 games to go. This is going to be a tremendous challenge indeed. I believe he's a fine quarterback and he'll rise to the challenge."

Initial reports were that his hand was fractured but Andy Reid said Monday that it was a contusion (bruise) and not a fracture. He'll be evaluated further as the week goes along. While some reports were circulating that Vick could miss "3-4 weeks", Andy Reid said on Monday that Vick's status for Week 4 was not yet determined. Vick is expected to see a hand specialist Monday, and he reportedly might also get a CT scan to check on his post-concussion symptoms.
