Undervalued TEs

Alge Crumpler - ATL - ADP: 66 overall, TE 5 2 votes

Cecil Lammey - Crumpler really came into his own in 2004. He can really move well and find the soft spot in the defense. He also provides Michael Vick with a great outlet receiver when Vick gets in a jam. Crumpler has soft hands and catches the ball away from his body. He is deceptively fast for a man his size and runs well after the catch. Vick is not a great passer but what he can do is play dink and dunk football with Crumpler being on the receiving end of most of the dunks. His ADP is TE5, but he could easily be the TE3 at the end of the 2005 season.

Mark Wimer - Who else is going to catch the ball in Atlanta this year? Michael Jenkins, Peerless Price, Brian Finneran? If you’re not excited by this short list of Falcon wide receivers (I’m not), then you can see why Alge Crumpler has excellent fantasy prospects this year. Michael Vick trusts Crumpler, and he doesn’t have any other top-shelf weapons in the passing game – this situation should result in a strong season on Crumpler’s part.

Eric Johnson - SF - ADP: 109 overall, TE 9 2 votes

Marc Levin - Johnson stayed healthy for all of 2004, which was a nice change from missing all of 2003 and much of 2002 after a promising rookie year. He was the third tight end in catches with 82, his receiving average was over 10 yards per catch, and he was an important piece of the 49ers’ passing attack. Young and inexperienced QBs like Alex Smith and Tim Rattay will probably look for Johnson as their outlet quite often. In the 10th round as the TE10 off the board, Johnson is a nice late round TE starter – especially if you get points per reception for TEs.

Maurile Tremblay - One of the keys to Eric Johnson’s success last year (825 yards on 82 receptions) was the lack of stellar WR options on the 49ers. The same hold true this year. Brandon Lloyd, Arnaz Battle, and Johnnie Morton will not be confused with Harrison, Wayne, and Stokley. Although Johnson had a poor second-half of the season and finished as the #7 TE last year, he showed in the first half that he has the potential to be top five at his position.

Jermaine Wiggins - MIN - ADP: 122 overall, TE 11 2 votes

Chris Smith - Despite his out-of-shape appearance, Wiggins has become an important part of the Vikings offense. QB Daunte Culpepper has a lot of faith in Wiggins and he’ll catch a lot of passes once again this season.

David Yudkin - Wiggins totaled 71-705-4 last year in 14 games played, which projects to 81-806-5 in a full season (110 fantasy points). The #11 TE scored 72 points last season. While Wiggins may not post 800/5 with the return of Jim Kleinsasser, Wiggins should still be in store for a solid season with Randy Moss’ targets now being spread out among several people.

Jason Witten - DAL - ADP: 53 overall, TE 3 2 votes

Aaron Rudnicki - Witten finished last season as the #3 TE and his production was remarkably consistent throughout the season. The Cowboys have made upgrades on the offensive line, at quarterback, and at the backup running back positions which should improve the overall effectiveness of the offense. If the league continues to enforce the no contact rule as they did last season, Witten has a good chance to replicate his big season and may even improve on it. His position as the third TE off the board isn’t what makes him a value play, but rather the fact that he can be had 20 picks after Antonio Gates. Both have had only one huge year of production, but I think Gates is being overvalued because of his abnormally high TD total and wouldn’t be surprised if Witten outperformed him in 2005.

Maurile Tremblay - Witten is currently being drafted a full 20 spots lower than Antonio Gates even though Witten had more catches for more yards last year. I still prefer Gates to Witten.

Randy McMichael - MIA - ADP: 95 overall, TE 8 1 vote

Jason Wood - McMichael has finished 9th, 8th and 5th in his first three seasons in the NFL. Last year, on an awful Dolphins team, he caught 73 passes for 791 yards and 4 TDs. Putting aside his potential legal issues (I believe they won’t be a factor during the 2005 regular season), he’s clearly worth considering a round or two higher than his current ADP suggests.

Jeremy Shockey - NYG - ADP: 65 overall, TE 4 1 vote

Andy Hicks - Jeremy Shockey is ranked among the top 6 tight ends this season, but he has the makings to be one of the best. Last season he ranked sixth which is around his current draft slot. That was his first season under Tom Coughlin. He missed a game and played injured in others. Additionally, Shockey also had rookie Eli Manning playing for most of the season. With the addition of Plaxico Burress the Giants have a receiver who can take the focus off Shockey. In his 4th season Shockey should be heading towards the elite level, which he has promised since his debut season.

L.J. Smith - PHI - ADP: 110 overall, TE 10 1 vote

Chris Smith - With all the turmoil at the receiver position in Philadelphia this season (Todd Pinkston injured; Todd Mitchell gone and Terrell Owens unhappy) L.J. Smith should see an increased in targets this season. He may have a great 2005 year.
