DEF - NYG - DE Rice Passes on Giants For Now NYG - Sore Legs Sideline TE Shockey Source: Associated Press, CBS.Sportsline TE Jeremy Shockey missed two practices with sore legs at the New York Giants training camp on Thursday. Shockey had complained that his legs were bothering him on Wednesday. Giants HC Tom Coughlin said after the morning practice on Thursday that Shockey had upper leg soreness and would sit out both workouts. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] At this point, we would not drop Shockey in our rankings -- when the games start to count, we believe he'll be ready to go. But that could all change if he misses another few practice sessions, so this is something we'll be monitoring for you. RB Morency Diagnosed With Knee Sprain Source: Packers.com Green Bay Packers HC Mike McCarthy spoke today about the injury to RB Vernand Morency. "They're saying a couple weeks, two to three weeks. I talked to Mo this morning. The soreness is in his patella tendon. It's a knee strain is what it's classified as. It's a couple weeks. It could be two. It could be four," McCarthy said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Brandon Jackson has been slightly disappointing in the first few practices, but let's see how he does during the next few weeks. Morency's injury will give Jackson a chance to work with the first team during the preseason. It's up to Jackson to take advantage of the situation. DAL - WR Owens Returns To Practice Source: ESPN Dallas Cowboys WR Terrell Owens returned to practice on Thursday afternoon for their only workout of the day. Owens sat out both workouts Wednesday, a day after HC Wade Phillips had him rest a sore hamstring. Phillips said Wednesday that Owens wasn't injured. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Owens' hamstring injury doesn't appear to be too serious, so he will have to find another way to be a distraction. In the meantime, his resting his hamstring is being overplayed. MIA - QB Green Not Making Good Impression Source: Edgar Thompson, Palm Beach Post Miami Dolphins HC Cam Cameron has privately told Dolphins veterans not to assume that QB Trent Green will be the opening day starter. During the first week of training camp, Green hasn't given Cameron a reason to change his mind and anoint him the starter over Cleo Lemon. Green has both looked like an aging veteran and a first-year quarterback learning a new system. For every glimpse of Green's Pro Bowl form from his days in Kansas City, like a 60-yard pass to Chris Chambers Wednesday, there is a head-scratching moment where he throws into coverage, or an ugly interception. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] We still expect Green to begin and finish the season as the Dolphins' starter, but Cleo Lemon shouldn't be completely counted out. Lemon has exceptional mobility and arm strength, and if he ends up outperforming Green during the preseason, he could be a solid sleeper. Source: Associated Press, Boston Globe New England WR Randy Moss was absent from Thursday morning's practice after sustaining a hamstring injury Wednesday. HC Bill Belichick says Moss is day-to-day. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Moss has been impressive in camp so far. His hamstring injury isn't a concern . . . yet. We'll keep you updated on his ability to practice. Source: Tom Silverstein, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Due to an intense offseason workout regimen, Packers QB Brett Favre, 37, is in excellent shape. "He looks better now than he did two years ago when I worked with him. I'm talking about movement, physically, everything," Favre's trainer Ken Corner said. Favre's unique training schedule includes exercises designed for speed and efficiency. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Everybody is always reported to be in great shape in August, whether it's true or not. But in Brett Favre's case, we believe he's in as good a shape as he can be. He's as hard a worker as any quarterback in the league. TB - Bucs HC Gruden Says CB Buchanon Could See Time At WR, PR Source: St. Petersburg Times Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden said on Thursday that cornerback Phillip Buchanon may also see playing time as a wide receiver for the team, as well as possibly serve as the team's punt returner as well. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Maybe Gruden has been catching tape of Chicago's Devin Hester looking great in camp. Buchanon is seriously talented but I want to see how he looks as a WR. There's more to it than the physical side. TB - QB McCown Getting Forty Percent Of Snaps Source: Stephen F. Holder, St. Petersburg Times Amidst all of the quarterback talk regarding Tampa Bay and Jeff Garcia, Chris Simms, Jake Plummer and Dante Culpepper, the one QB flying low under the radar making a splash is reserve QB Luke McCown. McCown has had a great offseason, displaying his arm strength and mobility. HC John Gruden estimates McCown is taking 40% of first team snaps, the same number as projected starter QB Jeff Garcia. McCown missed most of last season with a knee injury. "Let's give the guy a chance. None of us have seen him for over a year," Gruden said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Garcia is still the heavy favorite to man the QB position for the Bucs this year, but McCown may be inching his way past Chris Simms on the depth chart for the number two spot. DEF - SF 49ers LB Smith Currently Listed As Starter At MLB Source: Matt Maiocco, Santa Rosa Press Democrat San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan recently said that the starting middle linebacker spot with the team is linebacker Derek Smith's to lose, ahead of rookie linebacker Patrick Willis. "It's Derek's job to lose or someone to take from him in the base downs," Nolan said. "In third downs, it's Patrick's job to keep or lose." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] You IDP guys take note here. Smith looks intent on holding onto that starting job. DEF - KC - Chiefs' CB Law Says He's Finally Healthy Source: Associated Press, Rocky Mountain News CB Ty Law finally feels healthy after a three year battle with a foot injury. "I wasn't the same guy. It was tough. They said it would be a two-year injury. I was playing more of a mental game." Law said. I'm still getting my confidence in my ability to cut. There's something new every day," he added "I actually feel kind of clumsy. I'm doing breaks and cuts that I haven't done. I'm tripping over my own feet at times, because I'm quicker." "At the end of the day, I'm my biggest critic," Law said. "I'm always challenging myself. That's just how I've been my whole career. People are going to pat you on the back. People are going to say you're not that great. I've heard it. But I've ran with the best of them throughout my career. "I'll be fine. I always tell myself that I ain't worth a darn, just to motivate myself."[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Law is certainly not the player he once was. But he's a savvy veteran that hopes to make up for what he's lost physically with experience. His goal is to be fully ready in time for Week 1 and we're cautiously optimistic. DEF - HOU - Texans' DE Williams Leaves Practice With Tight Hamstring Source: Associated Press, Sports Illustrated Houston Texans DE Mario Williams missed Thursday's practice with a tight hamstring, but he and coach Gary Kubiak said it wasn't serious. "I just don't want something to happen right now in training camp," Williams said. "This is a very important season coming up for the team, and I want to be a part of that. So I'm going to try to be as cautious as possible." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Let's hope this is just the Texans being cautious and it's not serious. Williams has been looking forward to a big season without the Reggie Bush / Vince Young spot light shining on him. Stay tuned. DEF - CAR - CHI - Panthers Add S Harris In Trade Source: Len Pasquarelli, ESPN The Carolina Panthers on Thursday afternoon acquired two-year veteran S Chris Harris from the Chicago Bears for a fifth-round choice in the 2008 draft. "You always hate to give up a draft pick, but we've said all along we would be looking at safeties, because it was a need position," said HC John Fox following Thursday afternoon's practice. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Bears were able to trade from depth at the at the safety position to stockpile a pick and the Panthers were able to add a guy they think can contribute. DEF - NYG - DE Rice Passes on Giants For Now Source: Mike Garofolo, Newark Star-Ledger DE Simeon Rice has left New York without a contract from the Giants. The Giants reportedly showed an interest, but not enough for Rice to forgo other possibilities. When asked about Rice this morning, Giants GM Jerry Reese said there was "nothing to report" and that it was "a business trip for everybody." HC Tom Coughlin said, "It was a good opportunity to sit and visit with a guy. I've known Simeon for a long time. He was a high-school player in Chicago we recruited (while at Boston College)." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Things could change in the future possibly but for now, the Giants and Rice haven't been able to get together. This might change depending on what Michael Strahan does and also depending on other teams and if they have to deal with DE injuries during camp. That'll do it for today, folks. Have a great Friday and we'll see you tomorrow with the update. Thanks for reading. J |
