DEF - CHI - Bears Miss Deadline To Sign LB Briggs MIA - WR Chambers Passed Breathalyzer Test Source: Ethan J. Skolnick, South Florida Sun-Sentinel Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chris Chambers passed a Breathalyzer test at the police station after his Saturday morning arrest for driving while impaired, reckless driving and speeding. According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Chambers was taken into custody at 2:31 a.m. Saturday. He was released on $1,750 bond Saturday afternoon. Chambers was scheduled to appear in court today at 1 p.m. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Clearly, this is very good news for Chambers. 74 mph in a 45 mph zone is not good. But it's way better than 74 in a 45 while drunk. From the angle of how the league might view this, it's important to note that Chambers has not been in trouble during his time in Miami. We expect him to be ready to go for camp. SF - 49ers Agree To Terms With First Rounder OT Staley Source: Matt Maiocco, Santa Rose Press-Democrat The San Francisco 49ers have agreed in principle on the financial terms with first-round pick offensive tackle Joe Staley, the No. 28 overall selection. The two sides need to work out the language of the contract, which is expected to be a five-year deal. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Good news for the 49ers here. San Francisco has high hopes for Staley. Let's hope he can live up to them. BUF - HC Jauron Still Favoring Using Multiple RBs Source: Chris Brown, BuffaloBills.com Buffalo Bills HC Dick Jauron on what he would like to see from his running game: "I still would like, if we have the option, to run the ball by committee. Clearly inside that group the players will decide. They make all the decisions because we make judgments, but they make the plays. They'll win their carries by performance. We'd like to have two or three guys that perform well enough that you'll rotate them and keep them healthy. It will figure itself out." [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] A little more followup on the story from last week when Jauron was talking about this. Rookie Marshawn Lynch is the guy we expect to separate himself from the pack but it may take a few games for him to do that. To see how we project the entire team, click here. WAS - Redskins Release QB Hollenbach Source: Gary Fitzgerald, Redskins.com The Washington Redskins have released quarterback Sam Hollenbach. Hollenbach, a Maryland product, spent the offseason with the Redskins after signing as an undrafted free agent. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] For all you guys that were counting on Hollenbach, time for plan B... DEF - DET - Lions Sign Franchised DT Redding For Seven Years Source: John Clayton, ESPN On Monday, the Detroit Lions made Cory Redding the highest-paid defensive tackle in football. Redding, the team's franchise player in 2007, agreed to a seven-year, $49 million contract that included $16 million in guarantees, including $13 million in signing bonus and roster guarantees. Redding will receive a little more than $20 million over the first three years of his contract. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Another highest paid player at his position signing today. Redding may not have the name recognition of some players but he's a force and Lions got a good one here. Unlike Asante Samuel and Lance Briggs, Redding was able to close his deal before the deadline. DEF - NE - Deadline Passes For CB Samuel Source: Mike Reiss, Boston Globe Today marked the deadline for franchise players to sign contract extensions, or accept the one-year tenders from their teams. Asante Samuel can only play for the $7.79 million tender if he decides to report to the Patriots. In June, Samuel said he planned on holding out until the 10th week of the season. The gap between the sides was significant, which essentially halted the progress of any negotiations. While Samuel's agent, Alonzo Shavers, noted that the sides had recent discussions, they weren't fruitful and never reached the point in which specific contract language was being discussed. Samuel's camp had been focusing on the first three years of a contract, and was seeking around $30 million. The first three years of any deal are considered key, because players are generally guaranteed they will earn the money even though NFL contracts aren't guaranteed. Meanwhile, the Patriots' most recent offer would have paid Samuel an average of about $6 million per season, with approximately $13 million in bonuses.[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] As we'd been telling you, we'd heard things were pretty pessimistic and then all of a sudden over the last few days there was talk that a deal was "close". Evidently, it was just that - talk. The ball is now in Samuel's court. Will he accept the 1 year tender and play this season for $7.79 million or will he hold out? My gut feel with any player is that money talks and they'll play. As NFL Network's Adam Schefter said, Samuel will be making roughly $458,000 per game. How many of those game checks do you think he'll be willing to pass up? I bet not many. We'll obviously be watching this one closely for you. DEF - CHI - Bears Miss Deadline To Sign LB Briggs Source: SI.com Lance Briggs and the Chicago Bears remained at a stalemate Monday as time ran out for the Pro Bowl linebacker to sign a multiyear contract. The only deal that remains for Briggs to sign is a franchise-tag offer of $7.2 million. Upset that the Bears slapped him with the franchise-player tag in February, Briggs threatened a holdout -- at first for the entire season and then for 10 games so he could report for the final six to qualify as serving one year as a franchise player.[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] I think Briggs' situation is much like Asante Samuel's. He'll likely miss some training camp but when he looks at the dollars he'll be leaving on the table, he finds his way back to the locker room in time for Week 1. That'll do it for today, Folks. Have a great Tuesday and we'll see you tomorrow with the update. J |
