TB - QB Byron Leftwich wins starting quarterback job

Source: Jay Glazer - FOXSports.com

Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Raheem Morris informed the team Saturday, Aug. 29, that QB Byron Leftwich has beat out QB Luke McCown for the starting quarterback job.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This should help if you've been reluctant to take Antonio Bryant in the sixth or seventh round, because Leftwich is a far better downfield passer than McCown. The running game should have a little more room to operate since the safeties have to honor Leftwich's arm strength.

SD - QB Philip Rivers contract update

Source: Kevin Acee - the San Diego Union-Tribune

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers will earn $38.15 million fully guaranteed and a possible $99.25 million over the next seven years as part of his recent contract extension. The deal included a $19.55 million signing bonus, which will be prorated over the life of the contract, and a $6 million option bonus. The option bonuses will be paid out over in $1.2 million increments over the first five years of the six-year extension, which begins next year. Rivers will receive base salaries of $6 million in 2009, $6.6 million in 2010, $8.4 million in 2011, $10.2 million in 2012, $12 million in 2013, $13.8 million in 2014 and $15.75 million in 2015. The last year of the extension is actually an option year that must be exercised by the team in 2010 or Rivers' base salaries through 2014 are increased.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This deal sets the baseline for the deals Peyton Manning and Tom Brady will get next year.

WAS - QB Jason Campbell throws for 209 yards Friday

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Washington Redskins QB Jason Campbell was 13-for-22 for 209 yards during the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 28, against the New England Patriots. Campbell was able to score a touchdown on a four-yard run in the second quarter.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Campbell looked terrible against the Steelers, but he moved the offense at will against the Patriots. Campbell flashed the running ability that makes him an interesting late round pick as a backup if you have one of the stud QBs as your starter. We're not sure that Campbell will make it through the entire year as the starter, but he'll probably be there long enough to cover your #1 QB's bye week.

ARI - RB Chris Wells scores twice in preseason debut Friday

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Wells had seven carries for 46 yards with two touchdowns during the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 28.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wells didn't disappoint once he finally got on the field. He has fallen behind Tim Hightower in a lot of drafts, but he's a nice upside pick at RB in the seventh or eighth round once you've gotten your starters.

CLE - No word when starting quarterback will be named

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Cleveland Browns head coach Eric Mangini has given no indication when he will name his starting quarterback for the upcoming season. QBs Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson entered their preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29, in a virtual dead heat. Quinn appeared to outplay Anderson during the team's preseason game against the Tennessee Titans.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Gotta love those tight lipped Belichick disciples...

NO - QB Drew Brees throws two touchdowns Saturday

Source: Associated Press

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees went 14-for-17 for 179 yards and two touchdowns in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brees was having his way with the defense, and has proven why he should be one of the top two quarterbacks taken in every fantasy draft.

IND - TE Dallas Clark catches six passes Saturday

Source: Seattlepi.com

Indianapolis Colts TE Dallas Clark caught six passes for 63 yards and one touchdown in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Peyton Manning zeroed in on Clark. It's easy to forget that Clark will likely be the #2 target in the passing attack. He is a value in the sixth round of PPR leagues as the fourth (or later) off the board.

CLE - WR Braylon Edwards says players embracing Mangini

Source: Mary Kay Cabot - the Cleveland Plain Dealer

Mary Kay Cabot, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards said the team has bought into head coach Eric Mangini's system. 'We're in shape, that's first and foremost,' Edwards said. 'We've put the new system in, we got used to the coaches, we definitely got used to coach Mangini and his thought process, what his views are, his goals, his mission statement, the things he lives and dies by. We've memorized those and agreed to them. Now we're just ready to play football.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's a great headline, but the Browns should still be back in the draft's top 10 next year, no matter how well they take to Mangini's system.

NE - WR Randy Moss catches two TD passes Friday

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports New England Patriots WR Randy Moss caught six passes for 90 yards with two touchdown receptions during the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 28.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Moss put up the best numbers of any wide receiver this decade in 2007, and this performance revived the memory of the kind of numbers he was putting up during that season.

NE - QB Tom Brady throws two TD passes Friday

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (shoulder) was 12-for-19 for 150 yards with two touchdown passes during the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 28, against the Washington Redskins. Brady did not play in the second half, even though most of the first-team offense took part in the first series of the third quarter.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brady reminded fantasy owners how explosive he can be in this offense. He should be the first QB off the board in every draft.

ARI - QB Matt Leinart plays well Friday

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Arizona Cardinals QB Matt Leinart was 24-for-38 for 360 yards with three touchdown passes and an interception during the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 28, against the Green Bay Packers.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Leinart has successful fended off Brian St. Pierre for the backup job, and he's one of the few QBs worth handcuffing to a starter if rosters allow. Kurt Warner is coming into the season a little banged up, he has only played all 16 games in a season three times, and of course, Arizona has the best WR tandem in the league.

GB - TE Jermichael Finley catches two touchdown passes Friday

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley caught four passes for 28 yards with two touchdown receptions during the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 28.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Finley could become a red zone force a la Bubba Franks, but he is more talented than Franks ever was as a receiver. He's an excellent pick as a late TE2 in PPR leagues and leagues with deep benches, because he has the potential to crack the top 10 fantasy TEs in this high-flying passing offense.

GB - QB Aaron Rodgers throws three touchdown passes Friday

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was 14-for-19 for 258 yards with three touchdown passes during the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 28, against the Arizona Cardinals.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rodgers has been in midseason form from the beginning of the preseason. If this carries over to the regular season, Rodgers will crash the elite top three QB of Brady, Brees, and Peyton, and make it a top four.

CHI - Three competing for No. 3 WR job

Source: Larry Mayer - ChicagoBears.com

Larry Mayer, of ChicagoBears.com, reports Chicago Bears WR Devin Aromashodu, WR Rashied Davis and WR Brandon Rideau are all competing for the No. 3 wide receiver job. Some believe Aromashodu has the edge heading into the team's preseason game Sunday, Aug. 30. However, Davis has the most experience of the three and Rideau has been making more plays in training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Rookies Johnny Knox and Juaquin Iglesias had great showing in OTAs, but they have been passed by the veterans in training camp. We expect at least one of these vets that loses this battle will be cut to make room for the rookies.

GB - RB Brandon Jackson injured Friday

Source: Craig Morgan - CBSSports.com

CBSSports.com reports Green Bay Packers RB Brandon Jackson (ankle) left the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 28, with an ankle injury and is doubtful to return.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This could give DeShawn Wynn the chance to carry over the momentum from a great camp into the regular season as the backup to Ryan Grant.

ARI - RB LaRod Stephens-Howling suffers concussion Friday

Source: Darren Urban - AZCardinals.com

Darren Urban, of AZCardinals.com, reports Arizona Cardinals RB LaRod Stephens-Howling (concussion) suffered a concussion during the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 28, and will not return.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stephens-Howling showed his explosiveness on a kick return last week. He could become a poor man's Darren Sproles for the Cards.

CAR - RB Jonathan Stewart not playing Saturday

Source: Steve Reed - CBSSports.com

CBSSports.com reports Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (Achilles') will not play in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Stewart's injury woes continue, and fantasy owners have big reason for concern here. The Panthers have Stewart insurance, and his name is Mike Goodson. He needs to hold on to the football, and prove that he can be an effective pass blocker, but Goodson is a dangerous weapon any time he gets his hands on the ball.

DET - QB Daunte Culpepper throws touchdown Saturday

Source: Nicholas J. Cotsonika - the Detroit Free Press

Detroit Lions QB Daunte Culpepper, who is competing with QB Matthew Stafford for the starting job, went 7-for-12 for 67 yards and one touchdown in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 19.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Matthew Stafford looked better than he did last week, but Culpepper is probably the better choice to start about the Lions brutal early season schedule.

OAK - ILB Napoleon Harris waived

Source: Eric Gilmore - CBSSports.com

CBSSports.com reports the Oakland Raiders have waived LB Napoleon Harris.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That was quick.

OAK - WR Johnnie Lee Higgins No. 3 receiver

Source: Jerry McDonald - ANG Newspapers

Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders WR Johnnie Lee Higgins is currently the team's No. 3 wide receiver on the depth chart with the injury to WR Chaz Schilens (foot).

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That's the best place for Higgins, who has the straight-line speed to be a big play performer from the slot, but lacks the all-around game to start.

KC - QB Tyler Thigpen deal not dead yet

Source: Jason La Canfora - NFL.com

Jason La Canfora, of NFL.com, reports the Jacksonville Jaguars remain interested in acquiring Kansas City Chiefs QB Tyler Thigpen, and the Chiefs are certainly open to trading him. The mutual interest has not cooled and sources close to the situation maintain a trade between the teams could still occur. Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli is asking for a third-round draft pick for Thigpen.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

With Byron Leftwich being named the starter in Tampa, Luke McCown is now officially on the trade block, so the Chiefs have some competition in the trade market. That could prompt them to lower their asking price.

ARI - WR Jerheme Urban has strong game Friday

Source: Craig Morgan - CBSSports.com

CBSSports.com reports Arizona Cardinals WR Jerheme Urban had six receptions and 103 yards in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 28.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Urban is far from a household name, but if Steve Breaston's knee continues to be a problem into the regular season, he could put up numbers that make him rosterable in most leagues.

HOU - Kubiak impressed with TE James Casey

Source: Drew Dougherty - HoustonTexans.com

Drew Dougherty, of HoustonTexans.com, reports Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak has been impressed with TE James Casey. Casey has made one-handed catches in two consecutive practices. Kubiak said, "They look easy, don't they? They're catching our whole team's attention. He's had a really fine camp. We're asking him to do a great deal, but he's got a chance to turn into a fine pro pretty quickly."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Casey is a multi-faceted talent that we loved coming out of Rice. We think he could be a new-breed player that does everything from playing slot receiver and H-Back to piloting the wildcat offense and getting short-yardage carries. He shouldn't be on the waiver wire in deep dynasty leagues.

ARI - QB Kurt Warner yet to throw a touchdown pass this preseason

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Arizona Cardinals QB Kurt Warner was 10-for-16 for 139 yards with one interception and a lost fumble in the team's preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 28. Warner has not thrown a touchdown pass in the preseason.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Warner hasn't had a fantastic preseason, but he looks fine to the start the regular season after offseason hip surgery. He's a fine pick as the #5 or 6 QB off the board in the fifth round.

GB - CB Charles Woodson records two sacks Friday

Source: Associated Press

The Associated Press reports Green Bay Packers CB Charles Woodson had two sacks and forced three fumbles during the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 28.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If the preseason is any indication, the Packers are taking very well to Dom Capers 3-4 offense. They have been making big plays and forcing turnovers in bunches.

That'll do it for today, Folks. Have a great Sunday and if you're drafting today, show no mercy.

See you tomorrow with the update.
