DEN - No Shortage Of Teams Mentioned For DEN QB Cutler

Source: NFL.com

With the Jay Cutler drama in full swing in Denver, the speculation has been flying hot and heavy about potential trading partners. NFL.com ran down several potential teams that have been mentioned as maybe making a move for Cutler. Here is some local feedback on the pros and cons some teams see for making a move.

Redskins: The Washington Post's Jason Reid essentially put the kibosh on Washington being interested:

"Just got a text from Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, who wrote that there's no truth to an Internet report that the team is actively pursuing a trade for disgruntled Denver quarterback Jay Cutler.”

Reid says that Redskins head coach Jim Zorn is excited about the potential of QB Jason Campbell, who is currently participating in the team's offseason conditioning program.

Jets: CBS Sports analyst Boomer Esiason seems to feel a Cutler trade is inevitable. Esiason told the New York Post that the Jets should do everything possible to acquire Cutler:

"I'm telling you, if I could get this kid, I would go guns a-blazing and try to get him,” Esiason said.

"I know [Jet GM] Mike Tannenbaum, by virtue of the fact that he brought Brett Favre here, I guarantee you he is absolutely all over this, 100 percent.”

"If I'm a Jet fan, I want Jay Cutler. Do I want Kellen Clemens or Jay Cutler? I'll take Jay Cutler over Kellen Clemens, believe me.”

Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News suggests that former Jets coach Eric Mangini could have a role to play in a three way trade sending one of Mangini's QBs from Cleveland to Denver.

"The former Jets coach has two viable quarterbacks, Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, neither of whom has received an endorsement from Mangini. Quinn might be appealing to Broncos coach Josh McDaniels because he played at Notre Dame under Charlie Weis, who used to work with McDaniels in New England. Quinn is well-versed in the Weis/Patriots offensive system, which McDaniels will use in Denver.

"That means the Browns could emerge as the third team in a potential three-way trade. The main components of a three-way deal would be the Jets getting Cutler, the Broncos getting Quinn and the Browns getting a premium draft pick (or picks) to help their rebuilding process. Without Mangini, the Jets would be hard-pressed to swing the deal.”

Bears: David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune explains why Cutler would be a good fit for the Bears, and not just because the team reportedly was the QB's favorite as a kid:

"The Bears have missed the playoffs two straight years. They are a franchise that never has had a modern-day franchise quarterback. They have a general manager in Jerry Angelo on record this off-season saying he is "fixated,” on fixing the position. They have a defense respected around the league.”

For the article, click here

Browns: The Browns already have two starting QBs on their roster (Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson), so the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Tony Grossi says the team should avoid changing course at this stage:

"(The Browns) need to define their quarterback situation, not muck it up more with a whining, insecure flamethrower. Whatever additional RPMs on his fastball Cutler would bring, the overall total package is not going to significantly upgrade the team.”

DEN - QB Cutler's Agent Cook And Owner Bowlen Comment

Source: Thomas George, Senior Columnist - NFL.com

Bus Cook, Denver QB Jay Cutler's agent, said on Wednesday morning: "Jay was disappointed in the firing of Mike Shanahan and met with the owner. The owner assured him everything would be fine. The owner said he had the second-best offense in football and would leave the offensive staff intact. Jay was good with that. Then he hires an offensive coach who gets rid of the staff."

Bowlen said on Wednesday afternoon: "I really have had no discussion with Jay or the agent. Mike was fired right after the season. At that point, there was no need to have a discussion with Jay. Now, actually, to be fair, I don't think I had that discussion. I don't recall it. I know I'm getting up there in age, and I am not sure of that discussion."

On Jan. 12, Bowlen hired former New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. McDaniels naturally wanted to run his own offense with his own assistants.

According to NFL.com, Cutler's attitude at that point was, well, you might as well get rid of me, too.

"But I never requested a trade for Jay then," Cook said. "That is simply not true.

"Jay met with the coach early on and then told me everything was going to be OK. He said, 'We are going to work this out; we are on the same wavelength.' Everything was fine until Saturday two weeks ago. Jay called me and asked, 'Are they trying to trade me?' I told him, 'No, why would they try to do that?'"

That was when the story broke that the Broncos had discussions about trading Cutler in a deal that would bring then-New England quarterback and McDaniels mentee Matt Cassel to Denver. Cassel wound up being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, but Cutler has said he lost trust in McDainiels because of the way the entire episode was handled.

"We told them the evening of our last meeting that Jay wanted to be a Bronco even before the meeting," Cook said. "Jay told them he understood about the coach's relationship with Matt Cassel. At no time was the coach critical of Jay. In fact, he told Jay soon after he got to Denver that Jay was the reason he came to Denver. So, why was he trying to trade him? All the guy had to do was say I dropped the ball, I have a special bond with Cassel, you are my guy. Jay never heard that. What he heard in the meeting was it could happen again."

Bowlen was asked if he thought Cutler would remain a Bronco.

"To tell you the truth, I have no answer to that question," Bowlen said. "I would like to keep him here, obviously. But if you are going to be an unhappy camper, there is no real reason to be here."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wow, what a mess. There are always two sides to every story. But if Cook is representing Cutler's side accurately, what a colossal bungling of this by Bowlen and McDaniels. The Broncos have plenty of problems. Finding a quarterback is not one of them.

I said last week that I thought Cutler would shrug this off and get to work on proving to the Broncos they were crazy for considering a trade. Apparently that's not the case and there are some serious fractures here. Rumors have been swirling all around with Cutler. The Redskins, Jets, Bears, Browns, Lions and Buccaneers have all been mentioned as potential teams that might be interested.

This one has definitely taken a turn for the worse, stay tuned.

BUF - RB Lynch Expected To Be Suspended One or Two Games

Source: Clark Judge, CBSSports.com

Bills RB Marshawn Lynch met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to discuss Lynch's misdemeanor gun charge from Feb. 11. It was the second time in nine months he has been involved with the law and the expectation is that Lynch will be suspended for one or two games, according to persons close to the situation. Before any decision is made, Goodell wanted to interview the running back and allow him to defend himself. Lynch was sentenced to three years of probation and 80 hours of community service.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Lynch is of course saying the right things. "I have made mistakes in the past," Lynch said in a statement. "Although I have learned many lessons over recent years, I obviously had not learned enough."

A source close to Lynch said the situation was "not as it was portrayed," and that Lynch will try to communicate that to Goodell.

Roger Goodell hasn't been the commissioner long enough to have an extensive track record but the general feel is that he's way less than happy to be dealing with these guys when it's their second time around. Looks like this could be a 1-2 game situation. That may not sound like much, but remember that most Fantasy Leagues play a 14 game "regular" season. Two games in a 14 game season is obviously a bigger percentage of missed time than it is in the regular NFL season.

If Lynch were to miss more time, Fred Jackson is a guy that you'll want to keep an eye on. Jackson turned a few heads in Week 17 last year against the Patriots when he rushed for 136 yards on 27 attempts. Just something to file away...

NYG - Giants Begin Workouts Without WR Burress

Source: ESPN.com, Associated Press

As expected, WR Plaxico Burress was not in attendance at the Giants voluntary workout this week. The Giants have stated for months that they will wait for the legal process to conclude before deciding what to do with Burress. Burress is due in court on March 31. If convicted of the felony charge, Burress faces a mandatory 3 1/2 years in prison.

"You all know the legal process is forthcoming, and pretty much, that's where we are. I don't have anything new to report" said coach Tom Coughlin.

When asked, Coughlin refused to speculate on Burress' future.

"I wouldn't even go into that," he said. "As I always say, that kind of speculation is fruitless. I don't see any benefit in that."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Expect this to be a regular topic this summer as Burress sorts out his situation here.

Quarterback Eli Manning said he'd reached out to Burress. "I've sent some texts and just tried to keep up with him and tell him I'm thinking about him," Manning said in a conference call. "In that situation there's a lot of waiting and seeing. I guess we'll find something out these next couple of weeks about what's going to happen."

The Giants passing game is obviously one to watch so despite the drama, this situation is one we'll want to watch very closely. If Burress is unable to play, how the Giants fill that void will be a hot topic.

ARZ - Cardinals QB Warner Undergoes Hip Surgery

Source: Darren Urban, AZCardinals.com

Arizona Cardinals QB Kurt Warner had surgery Tuesday to repair a labrum tear in his left hip, but is expected to recover quickly enough to return for most of the team's offseason workouts. Warner played with the injury most of the 2008 season. The arthroscopic surgery also allowed for the cleaning out of loose fragments in the area. "Everything went well and I am feeling great," Warner said in a statement released by the team. "I began rehab on a stationary bike just a few hours after surgery and then a couple more times (Wednesday).

"(The injury) was one I sustained and played with last season and although I could have continued to play with it, I felt it was best for short-term success on the field as well as long-term comfort off the field. I am ready to go to work and back to normal so we can build on what we accomplished last season.”

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Doesn't sound like this will be an issue at all. But you know how it goes with these older guys. Little things turn into bigger things. I'm a Kurt Warner fan but it's hard to imagine his perceived value ever being much higher again than it is right now. If it stays there, it might be best to let another guy in your league over pay for him.

JAC - WR Matt Jones Cut

Source: MSNBC.com

The Jaguars released the following statements:

All roster moves are decisions we feel are in the best interest of the organization, Jaguars General Manager Gene Smith said. This decision is a result of our ongoing player and roster evaluations. We expect responsibility and accountability, and those are important qualities as we continue the process of building this team.

"On a day when players returned to Jacksonville Municipal Stadium to undergo physical assessments that kick off new strength coach Luke Richessons conditioning program, Matt Jones was cut by the team following a week in an Arkansas jail for violation of his probation. Thus ends an attempt to convert Jones from a college quarterback to a pro pass-catcher. He was the 21st overall pick of the 2005 draft."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Mike Walker is the guy you want to watch here. He'll likely be the guy that will move up and start opposite Dennis Northcutt. He has struggled to regain the explosive flashes he displayed before a knee injury in 2007. He's still very young though and has some really nice potential. Keep an eye on him in this situation with Matt Jones now out of the mix.

NE - Patriots Sign WR Galloway

Source: Patriots.com

The New England Patriots signed veteran wide receiver Joey Galloway Thursday. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Galloway's production fell off sharply in 2008. He was the 5th highest ranked WR in 2005, #15 in 2006, #21 in 2007. And # 128 last season. And he's not getting any younger. On the flip side, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady make lots of WRs better.

BAL - PHI - Ravens Sign Free Agent TE Smith To One-Year Deal

Source: Christopher Harris, ESPN.com

The Baltimore Ravens announced on Tuesday evening that they have signed free agent tight end L.J. Smith to a one-year contract. Financial terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Ravens TE Todd Heap is the big loser here. Heap's been one of the most frustrating players in the league over the last few years. He's immensely talented. In 2005, he was the #3 TE in the league. In 2006, he ranked as the #4 TE in the game. But the last two years have seen him rank #38 in 2007 and #23 in 2008. Entering his 9th season, it's difficult to expect much of a bounceback. There had been rumblings out of Baltimore this year that the team wanted to utilize Heap more in a blocking role. The Smith signing does nothing to disprove that. What it looks like the Ravens will have is two pretty good TEs. That's nice for Ravens fans but from a fantasy football perspective, it means it'll be hard to get excited about either player.

BAL - Ravens To Reportedly Bring In Free Agent OT Pace For Visit

Source: Tom Curran, NBC Sports

The Baltimore Ravens are expected to bring in free agent offensive tackle Orlando Pace for a visit on Wednesday evening.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Pace is 33 years old. To be more specific, Pace is 33 years old and he's had a very difficult time staying healthy the last few years. The Rams need as much help as anyone and they didn't feel he was worth the money. There's no denying his outstanding career, but it looks like Pace is well on the downhill side of it.

NYJ - RB T.Jones A No-Show For Voluntary Camp

Source: Rich Cimini, N.Y. Daily News

Running back Thomas Jones missed a second straight day of Rex Ryan's inaugural offseason conditioning program, fueling speculation that the AFC rushing champ is unhappy with his contract.

Jones is entering the third year of a four-year, $20 million contract, which he signed at the time of his trade from the Bears, but his base salary for the coming season is only $900,000. Jones' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, approached the Jets about a renegotiation at last month's scouting combine in Indianapolis, according to a league source.

Rosenhaus didn't return calls for comment. Jets spokesman Bruce Speight refused to comment. Asked if there's a simple, non-contract-related reason for the absences, Speight once again declined to comment.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's a little early to get worried about these types of things but they're also something we try to keep an eye on for you. Sometimes new coaching staffs can create some playing time shifts as they have different evaluations of the personnel than the old staff.

As Cimini writes, this has the potential to get messy. The Jets would like to sign Leon Washington - Jones' backfield partner - to a long-term extension. Washington is entering the final year of his rookie contract. A deal here could muddy the waters if Jones is also seeking a new contract. The other factor according to Cimini is that new coach Rex Ryan has a policy against renegotiating veteran contracts, according to former Jets wide receiver Laveranues Coles. Coles said that was the explanation given to him when he was rebuffed last month on a long-term extension.

This may work itself out just fine. But the pieces are in place for this to get ugly for Jones and to possibly create an opportunity for Leon Washington. Stay tuned.

CLE - UNCONFIRMED SOURCE: WR Stallworth Over Legal Limit

Source: CBS4.com, CBS4 Miami

A South Florida television station reported that a "source close to the situation" said Browns WR Donte Stallworth tested above the legal limit for driving while intoxicated just after struck and killed a man with his car last weekend in Miami. CBS4 News Miami contacted Stallworth's attorney Bob Switkes and Miami Beach Police spokesman Juan Sanchez who both say they could not confirm the media report. Sanchez went on to say that the toxicology results weren't expected back until Friday.

DET - Culpepper Sheds Excess Weight

Source: John Niyo, Detroit News

Lions QB Daunte Culpepper arrived at the team's offseason workout sessions much closer to his optimal playing weight in his Minnesota days as opposed to the 290 pound frame he played with last season. "I mean, he looks like a new man," center Dominic Raiola said. "He looks brand new. The guy really took this re-signing serious and this job serious. He's in great shape." Raiola estimates that Culpepper has lost around 20 pounds so far.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

I'm always hesitant to even report these types of stories. But I know you guys want to know everything. The reason I hesitate is that it seems like every year there are a slew of players that report looking great (or terrible) and go on to have terrible or great results. There's a LOT more to success at this level than 5% bodyfat. But on the flip side, I tend to put some value on the sheer fact that the guy's been working out hard and is at least focused enough to stay in shape. Bottom line is this type of story is semi interesting to talk about but don't go crazy with it.

NFL - Proposed Rule Change: Review QB Throw Vs. Fumble

Source: ESPN.com, Associated Press

The competition committee will propose a rule change to allow instant replay to determine whether or not a quarterback's arm was in motion, or if he fumbled the ball. The proposal stems from a blown call by official Ed Hochuli in the Chargers, Broncos game when Hochuli ruled a ball that slipped from Broncos QB Jay Cutler's grasp was an incomplete pass instead of a fumble. Under league rules, the play was not reviewable. Hochuli later agreed it was the wrong call.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

I'm sure Ed Hochuli would rather not be famous for having a rule (unofficially) named after him. I'm sure Charger fans would rather he'd gotten the call right...

TEN - RB White Shows Up 20 Pounds Lighter

Source: Gary Estwick, The Tennessean

The Titans kicked off their offseason conditioning program Monday. Gary Estwick of the Tennessean interviewed strength and conditioning coach Steve Watterson. Watterson had some interesting news about RB LenDale White.

Q: Running back LenDale White vowed after last season's playoff loss to Baltimore that he would come back next season as a better player, including improved work habits. What have you seen from him so far?

A: What he told us was true. He came in this offseason over 20 pounds lighter than he was last year at this time. He showed up today, what is considered the voluntary day, the extra day of training, to make up for Monday because he was not here. He came in yesterday and today and both days have been excellent workouts. He has been able to complete all of the assigned work. After Day 2, he's holding strong.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Over the years, I've been critical of White's attitude and work habits. Only fair to give him props here. His talent is not disputable. If he can get the mental part of his game in line, he could be a scary player.

CLE - WR Stallworth Issues Statement After Accident

Source: NFL.com

Four days after he was involved in an auto accident that killed a pedestrian, wide receiver Donte Stallworth issued a statement through the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday.

"My family and I are grief stricken over the tragic accident which occurred Saturday on Miami Beach where Mario Reyes sadly lost his life,” the statement read. "My thoughts and prayers are with the Reyes family during this incredibly difficult time. Unfortunately, since this accident is still under police investigation, I cannot comment further on the matter at this time.”

No charges have been filed against Stallworth, who hit 59-year-old Mario Reyes on Saturday morning on a busy causeway linking Miami and Miami Beach. According to The AP, Miami Beach police are awaiting the results of the toxicology report, which are expected to be released by the end of the week.

DEF - CAR - NE - Panthers Deny DE Peppers Trade Rumors

Source: ESPN.com, Associated Press

The Carolina Panthers denied a report Monday they've discussed trading four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers to the New England Patriots. Then again, Carolina cannot have any trade talks involving Peppers until he signs his one-year tender worth $16.7 million -- or until his agent brokers a deal with another team and comes to Carolina for approval. NFL.com, citing unidentified sources, reported the Panthers and Patriots were close to a deal that would send Peppers to the Patriots for New England's second-round pick, 34th overall, that was acquired from Kansas City in the Matt Cassel trade. "By the rules of the [collective bargaining agreement] we cannot and have not had any conversations with other teams about Julius," Panthers GM Marty Hurney said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This one may have been a little premature it seems as everyone was pretty excited about Peppers to New England. Very well still could happen but we'll just have to see. Carolina placed the Franchise Tag on Peppers meaning that a team would have to give up two first round picks if they signed him. They also could come to Carolina with an offer of something less than the two first rounders. Stay tuned.

DEF - CIN - HC Lewis Impressed By S Roy Williams

Source: Geoff Hobson, Bengals.com

Five-time Pro Bowl safety Roy Williams underwent what Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer called a good workout at Paul Brown Stadium Thursday morning.

"He looked athletic and strong," Zimmer said.

Head Coach Marvin Lewis spent much of the past two days with Williams and came away impressed.

"He's a great football player and he's a wonderful guy," Lewis said. "I'm glad we got to know him and he got to know us. He'd be a good asset for us. You can never have too many players and this guy has been an outstanding player. He makes plays that win games."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The question is how much gas Williams has left in the tank. There seems to be some sentimental value in getting to work with Zimmer again. And Zimmer probably is thinking he'd like to inject some "winning attitude" into a team that needs to turn things around.

DEF - PIT - Steelers Retain CB Bryant

Source: John Clayton, ESPN.com

The Pittsburgh Steelers reached a one-year agreement to re-sign veteran CB Fernando Bryant, who was brought in last season as insurance for their defensive backfield. Bryant has 109 career starts and will able to compete for playing time in 2009 now that he has a full offseason to work with the team.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Not a huge deal but in this league, it's tough to have too much depth at cornerback.
