GB - RB Ryan Grant to carry most of running load
Source: Kevin Seifert, ESPN.com
Kevin Seifert, of ESPN.com, reports Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson said although the team likes the idea of having a 1-2 punch at the running back position with RBs Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson, the team envisions Grant being the main guy. 'I think you need multiple guys, and we think we have some guys that can step in and play. We've put a lot of burden on Ryan the last couple of years, and I think in an ideal situation we would have some guys step in and take some of those reps, but we feel like Ryan will be our guy.'
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Grant got off to a slow start last season, with only 359 rushing yards (3.3 ypc) in the first six games of 2008. He ended the season with over 1,000 yards rushing but a meager 3.9 ypc, and only 22 targets in the passing game. Brandon Jackson could be a nice change of pace runner for the team and can also be consistently targeted in the passing game. He increased his YPC from 3.9 in 2007, to 5.5 in 2008 and many feel that he is deserving of more playing time this year. If Grant falters, starts slow, or is injured the team could turn to Kregg Lumpkin who has impressed every time he's been on the field.
CHI - QBs missed WR Devin Hester open downfield in 2008
Source: Larry Mayer, ChicagoBears.com
Larry Mayer, of ChicagoBears.com, reports that a review of game tape revealed that "there were about a dozen instances when Hester was open down the field but didn't get the ball for a variety of reasons". He also wrote "There's no doubt in my mind that he can be a No. 1 receiver in the NFL, and I think that's something that everyone will see this year with Jay Cutler under center."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Hester is an outstanding pick in best ball survivor leagues this year because we expect Cutler to have both the awareness and arm strength to find Hester downfield more often than Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman did last year. Hester's upside vastly exceeds his ADP of 98 overall and WR38, especially non-PPR leagues.
BAL - WRs Marvin Harrison, Brandon Marshall among top options to replace Mason
Source: Jamison Hensley, The Baltimore Sun
Jamison Hensley, of the Baltimore Sun, opined that the top five options to replace Derrick Mason are 1) Marvin Harrison, 2) Brandon Marshall 3) Anquan Boldin 4) Plaxico Burress, 5) Drew Bennett
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We like the options of Marshall and Boldin, especially if all the Ravens have to pay is a first-round pick. Marshall (and Burress) are character risks, but the Ravens seem to have a strong culture of accountability. We're afraid that Harrison might not have much left in the tank, and Bennett didn't have much in the tank to begin with.
BAL - HC Harbaugh plans to meet with WR Derrick Mason
Source: Jamison Hensley, The Baltimore Sun
Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun, reports Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said he has had some communication with retired WR Derrick Mason (Ravens) about his retirement and plans to meet with Mason as early as next week.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Coach Harbaugh brings up an interesting point about what Mason's been going through in the past couple of weeks, and how he's dealing with the death of his friend Steve McNair. "We have an appointment to talk real soon," Harbaugh said today. "It will be interesting to see where he's at with everything. I know he's been going through a lot the last couple of weeks with Steve's [McNair] situation, but I'm looking forward to talking to him."
BAL - WR Mark Clayton will try to convince Derrick Mason to return
Source: Arron Wilson, The Carroll County Times
Arron Wilson, of the Carroll County Times, reports Baltimore Ravens WR Mark Clayton said he will attempt to contact retired WR Derrick Mason (Ravens) and try to convince him to continue playing.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Clayton has confidence in the other Ravens receivers to take their game to a different level. "I know we're hard workers, all of our guys, and we understand that we've got to step up," Clayton said in a telephone interview. "Our goal is to do make plays down the field and score some touchdowns for the organization. We've got dudes here that are willing to work and do whatever it takes to bring their A game." Mason may be vacillating on his decision to retire so after training camp if he's feeling good then he may change his mind and come back to the team.
MIN - Favre gives a July 30th deadline
Source: Associated Press
Brett Favre tells The Associated Press that he felt "pretty good" after a workout Wednesday, but he's not yet ready to commit to the Minnesota Vikings because he wants to make sure he can be effective for an entire season. The 39-year-old quarterback says he will give the Vikings an answer on whether he'll play this season by the July 30 start of training camp.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Favre works out with high school kids three times a week, but reportedly added a Sunday workout because he's "running out of time." We can't wait for July 30th because football will be that much closer - and oh yeah - this "will he or won't he" stuff with Favre will be over.
DEN - WR Brandon Marshall must report to camp July 27
Source: Mike Klis,The Denver Post
Mike Klis, of The Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos WR Brandon Marshall (hip), as an injured player, has been informed that he must arrive for training camp July 27 along with the team's rookies. Marshall remains a threat to continue his protest of his existing contract by failing to report to the Broncos' facility by his assigned date. All players received a letter from head coach Josh McDaniels that formally notified them of their reporting dates for training camp. Veterans who demonstrated healthy bodies through offseason minicamps don't have to report until July 30, with two-a-day workout sessions commencing the next day. Rookies and players rehabilitating from injury are scheduled to report July 27.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Circle that date on your calendar if you're a Marshall owner. We still think there's enough chance that Marshall makes this ugly well into training camp (or even into the season) that we wouldn't take him in the top 10 wide receivers this year. Even if he does show up on July 27, he has a lot of ground to cover in learning the new offense and establishing chemistry with Kyle Orton.
JAC - TE Zach Miller could be a featured pass-catcher
Source: Vic Ketchman, Jaguars.com
Vic Ketchman, of Jaguars.com, reports Jacksonville Jaguars rookie TE Zach Miller may be featured as a pass-catcher this season. He looked sensational late in OTAs. Miller is making the switch to H-back after playing quarterback in college. He has flashed speed and pass-catching ability the Jaguars haven't had at that position.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This would be quite the feat and a huge surprise, as rookie TE's are rarely if ever featured in passing offenses. Ketchman's exact comment is "Expect Miller to be a featured pass-catcher this year". There's no "may" in that statement. It sounds like Miller has already made converts out of observers at Jags OTAs. If he doesn't make a big impact this year, don't give up on him. The former college option QB is clearly athletic and natural enough as a receiver to be a top 10-15 fantasy TE if he's given the chance and takes to the position and role.
BUF - WR Terrell Owens didn't plan on signing on visit to Buffalo
Source: Chris Brown, BuffaloBills.com
Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com, reports that WR Terrell Owens on Ryan Seacrest's radio show that he didn't plan on signing a contract on his visit to Buffalo. "When I came in it was really strictly just to talk and see if I liked the facilities and liked Buffalo," said Owens. "I was supposed to come back (home) and probably visit some other teams. But I didn't make it out of the building."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The visit obviously made him feel good about playing in Buffalo, but we still question the strategy of signing so quickly when Owens might have been able to get a long-term deal with more guaranteed money.
CIN - WR Chad Ochocinco plans to tweet during games despite NFL rule
Source: Shutdown Corner, Yahoo Sports
Shutdown Corner, a Yahoo! Sports blog, reports that WR Chad Ochocinco said he was planning to defy an NFL rule against updating twitter accounts during games during an interview on SportsFanLive. He said, "there's a lot of things they don't want me to do. I do it anyway. They know that. I don't know why they even fussing about it. ... When I say I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it, regardless of what they say."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Good luck with that, Ochocinco. He probably has a hundred thousand set aside for fines during the season anyway, so he won't notice the inevitable fine that will come if he keeps his word.
SF - WR Brandon Jones is in the right place
Source: Taylor Price, 49ers.com
Taylor Price, from 49ers.com, reports that after spending four seasons with the Tennessee Titans (2005-2008), Brandon Jones, the 6-1, 212-pound speedy wideout was looking for a new franchise to help establish himself as a top receiver in the NFL. Without hesitation Jones came to the Bay Area, becoming the latest versatile addition to the 49ers wide receiver puzzle. "I just feel like this is the place for me," Jones said in a recent interview with TV49. "I've been given the opportunity to come out here and [help] make plays. It's just one of those things that you know is right for you."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Jones signing came before the team drafted Michael Crabtree, so his opportunity to start opposite Josh Morgan was likely cut off at the pass. Still, he's been impressive in OTAs by most accounts, and he could easily serve as the #3 wideout this year, especially if Isaac Bruce hasn't retained his form of old.
DAL - WR Roy Williams might not talk to media this season
Source: Jean-Jacques Taylor, The Dallas Morning News
Jean-Jacques Taylor, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys WR Roy Williams said he might not talk to the media this upcoming season.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Could this be a warning sign that Williams is feeling the pressure now that he's the #1 wide receiver in Dallas? If he wants to avoid reporters because he doesn't want to be bothered that's not a big deal. However, if he doesn't want to talk to the media because he feels he's being criticized too harshly then that is a problem. Williams has to realize that he no longer has any excuse to be a mediocre talent in the league. Barring injury, he'll have a Pro Bowl quarterback throwing to him, a good ground game to keep the defense honest, and other receivers to attract coverage away from him. It's now or never for Roy Williams and the career underachiever will have to prove that he was worth the two 1st round picks the Cowboys gave up for him.
NYG - RB Danny Ware has big goals for the season
Source: Jenny Vrentas, The Newark Star Ledger
Jenny Vrentas, from the Newark Star Ledger, posted an interview he did with Giants RB Danny Ware. The former Bulldog back commented on his goals for the upcoming season, "I want to hopefully do like D. Ward did, try to average 50 yards a game to end up with over 800 to 1,000. I want to get about 800 yards and about 50 catches. That's just going to come with trust and playmaking and having the ability to be out there. It's pretty much just whatever situations they put me in, I want to be able to go out there and be effective and do the right things and be a productive player."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Danny Ware is currently third on the depth chart behind Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw. He'll have to beat out rookie Andre Brown for that position as well, so the path to production isn't without obstacles for Ware. He is an instinctive runner that keeps his feet after contact and does a good job of running through trash at the line of scrimmage. This offseason Ware has dropped ten pounds in an effort to become quicker, and he's been impressing his coaches in minicamp. The Giants may decide to fill Derrick Ward's role by using both Ahmad Bradshaw and Danny Ware. Both Jacobs and Bradshaw have battled injuries in their NFL careers, so we may see Ware get an even bigger opportunity in 2009.
MIN - WR Sidney Rice sheds knee brace for first time in ten months
Source: Sidney Rice
Sidney Rice reported on his blog at SidneyRice18.com that he "worked out full speed without my knee brace for the first time in 10 months and felt no pain." He also said the workout with Larry Fitzgerald and Cris Carter was the toughest of the entire offseason.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We loved Rice coming out of South Carolina, and this blog post shows exactly how much that knee limited him last year. His long term opportunity is limited by the presence of 2009 first-round pick Percy Harvin, but we still think this is a great time to pounce on Rice as a buy low in dynasty leagues.
SEA - RB T.J. Duckett would like to get more carries
Source: Eric Williams, The Tacoma News Tribune
Eric Williams, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports Seattle Seahawks RB T.J. Duckett said during a radio interview that he would like to receive more carries this season. 'I would love to have more carries,' Duckett said. 'I'm not just wanting to settle with being a short-yardage back just because of my size. So yeah, definitely, mentally I'm ready to compete for that.'
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Duckett had some of the best years of his career with head coach Jim Mora Jr. when they were both with the Falcons, and some are expecting a rejuvenation for Duckett in 2009. He scored 8 rushing TDs last year, but finished the season as the 59th best RB in fantasy football. In fact, he has never finished higher than the 21st best RB and that was back in 2003. The Seahawks RB situation is ugly, and while Julius Jones may get the most carries it will be T.J. Duckett when the team gets close to the goalline. If Jones fails to impress we could see more opportunity for Duckett and perhaps even Justin Forsett.
DAL - QB Tony Romo working on becoming a more vocal leader
Source: Scott Noll, The Dallas Morning News
Scott Noll, of The Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys FS Ken Hamlin said during a television interview that QB Tony Romo has been working on becoming a more vocal leader and has been more vocal during offseason workouts.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Both Wade Phillips and Tony Romo are trying to be more vocal in 2009. This could work out for both of them, but it could also be too little too late. Romo must prove that he can win late in the season and in the big games, and that will gain him more respect with his teammates than being vocal.
SF - HC Singletary says quarterback not biggest issue
Source: John Crumpacker, The San Francisco Chronicle
John Crumpacker, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said the quarterback competition will not be the biggest issue facing the team this summer. Singletary believes the team must show overall growth during training camp and the preseason. 'Too many times, people make an issue of the quarterback position when there are more important things that must happen,' Singletary said. 'Whether Shaun is the quarterback or Alex is the quarterback, our offensive line has to get better, the receivers have to get better and the coaches have to get better. All those things have to get better. We have to get to that place in a hurry.'
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
More wise words from Singletary, but the media will primarily focus on the quarterbacks until a starter is named. New offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye is from the Air Coryell school, and while he's more conservative than Mike Martz this 49ers team could put it in the air more than people are expecting.
DET - WR Bryant Johnson should benefit if team can run the ball
Source: Tom Kowalski, Mlive.com
Tom Kowalski, of mlive.com, reports that Detroit WR Bryant Johnson should benefit if the team can run the ball effectively because it would cause the opposition to put a safety in the box, and the other safety would have to keep an eye on Calvin Johnson. Kowalski added, "Other factors that should help Bryant Johnson get more opportunities with the Lions are the addition of rookie tight end Brandon Pettigrew and free agent slot receiver Dennis Northcutt."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We're not very high on Bryant Johnson because of his inability to stay healthy or prove that he can be an effective starting wide receiver so far in his career. Northcutt could actually take targets away from Johnson because he'll be a much better slot receiver than Ronald Curry.
NFL - Union advises players to save 25% of salary next two season
Source: Cindy Boren, The Washington Post
Cindy Boren, of the Washington Post, reports that the NFLPA told players save 25 percent of their salaries the next two seasons in case there is a lockout in 2011. "It's essential that players are financially prepared to withstand the loss of income due to a lockout," Dana Hammonds, the director of the union's financial programs and advisor administration, said on the website. "A financially sound membership represents a strong bargaining group."
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Another ominous sign of what is looming in 2011. Let's all hope cooler heads prevail and both sides realize there's more to be lost by a labor stoppage than either side would have to give up to get a new CBA done.
OAK - QB Andrew Walter could be released soon
Source: John Clayton, ESPN.com
John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports that Oakland QB Andrew Walter could be the odd man out at his position. The Raiders signed Jeff Garcia, Bruce Gradkowski, and Charlie Frye in the offseason, and Clayton thinks it is unlikely coach Tom Cable will go to camp with five veteran quarterbacks.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
We've only really gotten to see Walter while he was piloting a Raiders team that cruised to a 2-14 record in 2006. It's hard to say if he was as bad as he looked because he was on a team going nowhere. We would imagine that he'll get a shot in someone else's camp if the Raiders do release him.
MIA - QB Pat White's overthrows in minicamp raised concerns
Source: Barry Jackson, The Miami Herald
Barry Jackson, from the Miami Herald, notes Pat White's overthrows in May and June raised concerns - even White said when he watched tape of himself, it didn't look like him. But remember he is learning to play under center (he was primarily in the shotgun at West Virginia). And he completed an excellent 66 percent of his passes in his last three years in college.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
NFL Network's Mike Mayock called White the "perfect" Wildcat quarterback, but he does have a lot of work to do when playing from under center. He has little chance of beating out Chad Henne for the #2 job behind Chad Pennington, but could see the field as a gadget player in his rookie season. He's as fast as he needs to be, but in order to be a full time quarterback you must be more accurate and White knows that. "You want every ball to be on the money, but it doesn't work that way," White said, blaming his inaccuracy on "body position, my feet being wide."
SF - Eyes on a QB in 2010 draft?
Source: Matt Maiocco, The Santa Rosa Press Democrat
Matt Maiocco, from the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, notes the 49ers traded for Carolina's 2010 first-round pick because the organization felt the trade was the best way of getting into an ideal position for next year, just in case they become in the market for a quarterback again. This season will give the 49ers a firm idea of where they stand at quarterback. Coach Mike Singletary says he's happy to have Shaun Hill and Alex Smith competing for the starting job. That competition should be decided after the second exhibition game - if not sooner. But the 49ers were prepared to pay Kurt Warner in the neighborhood of $15 million a year to leave the Cardinals, so that tells you that the organization has its doubts about Hill and Smith.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The 49ers have 2 first-round picks and could decide to trade up if neither of their picks are high enough to select Jevan Snead (Ole Miss) or Sam Bradford (Oklahoma).
NFL - Union leaders meet with top lawmakers
Source: Associated Press
The Associated Press reports NFL players blitzed Capitol Hill Wednesday to lobby about a dozen members of Congress, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, for political support in a possible labor showdown with team owners. About 20 current and former players were walking Capitol corridors in three teams, following a negotiating session a day earlier between players and owners on a new collective bargaining agreement. Their message: Congress should be asking hard questions of owners about their profits under an antitrust exemption that Congress itself granted.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Congress has jurisdiction over the NFL in several areas, including a 1961 law granting leagues antitrust exemption for broadcasting. That allowed the NFL to sign TV contracts on behalf of all its teams, helping to transform the league into the economic powerhouse it is today. This labor situation is just beginning to heat up, and should get even more heated before a new agreement is reached.
DEF - CHI - Coach Marinelli speaks on defensive line
Source: Larry Mayer, ChicagoBears.com
Larry Mayer, of ChicagoBears.com, talked to new defensive line coach Rod Marinelli recently about his players. Marinelli on DT Tommie Harris: "He's one of the key spokes in the whole defense". Highlights include Marinelli on DE Adewale Ogunleye: "a veteran who's in tremendous shape." Marinelli on DT Marcus Harrison: "His potential is out of this world. He is a big, athletic man who moves well. He wants to be really good and he works hard." Marinelli also commented on DT Dusty Dvoracek, DL Israel Idonije, and DT Jarron Gilbert.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
The Bears defensive line was pretty quiet last year from a fantasy perspective, but that could all change with the addition of Marinelli, who was a terrific defensive coach during his time at Tampa Bay. We would be more inclined to take a chance on Harris in DT required leagues than we were before the Bears hired Marinelli.
DEF - CAR - LB Thomas Davis' custom car stolen
Source: WMBFnews.com
WMBFnews.com reports Panthers LB Thomas Davis had his "souped up" 1975 Caprice Classic convertible stolen from in front of his home.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
This is a very cool car that features many custom details including a special steering wheel with a football, and a painting of Davis at a desk with a Panther sprawled in front of it. If you know anything about this crime, call CMPD Detective L. Rango at 704-336-4466 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
DEF - WAS - DT Albert Haynesworth to have Reggie White-like impact?
Source: John Clayton, ESPN.com
John Clayton, from ESPN.com, notes Albert Haynesworth dreams of having the impact like Reggie White had when he left the Philadelphia Eagles for the Green Bay Packers 16 years ago.
[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Haynesworth has promised to be an impact player for the Redskins in 2009, and his contract could be worth as much as $100 million dollars if he performs like a superstar. The Titans will have to get used to life without Haynesworth, but it's something they already have a ton of experience with. During his seven seasons with the Titans Haynesworth missed 22 games, but the Titans have some young linemen, like Jason Jones, they can turn to for production.
