49ers | Christian McCaffrey to see lessened workload in 2026? Wed May 27, 12:30 AM
San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey could have his touches managed a bit more in 2026 to keep him fresher, in the opinion of 49ersWebZone's David Bonilla on Tuesday, May 26.
Footballguys view: After an injury-plagued 2024 season, McCaffrey was NFL Comeback Player of the Year after a 2025 campaign that included 2,126 scrimmage yards and 17 touchdowns on a league-high 413 touches. Kyle Shanahan thinks it was too much. "Last year was the worst we had been at it," the coach said of managing McCaffrey's workload. In an effort to lessen that burden, the 49ers hope second-year man Jordan James and 2026 third-round pick Kaelon Black can provide a change-of-paces options to lighten CMC's load. Still, expecting McCaffrey to get anything but the lion's share of the work here is a stretch.

Bucs HC Todd Bowles says he expects RB Bucky Irving to be back later "in the summer or fall" as he recovers from shoulder surgery.
Footballguys view: While multiple reporters are indicating a summer return is more likely, the fact that Bowles mentioned this could carry into fall is an eyebrow raiser. After a 1,000-yard rookie season, Irving rushed for 588 yards with one touchdown and caught 30 passes for 277 yards with three TDs last season. There's still time before the season starts, but this is worth watching. Kenneth Gainwell and Sean Tucker are the other primary backs on the roster.
Las Vegas Raiders RB Ashton Jeanty will be a player that rarely leaves the field, according to head coach Klint Kubiak. 'We want to put a lot of pressure on Ashton,' Kubiak said. 'I don't know the play snap percentage, but you look at Christian McCaffrey, his play snap percentage is high. So, those great backs, they don't want to come off the field.'
Footballguys view: Even after Las Vegas drafted former Arkansas RB Mike Washington Jr. in the fourth round, creating the assumption he would cut into Jeanty's workload, Kubiak preached the opposite after the team's second OTA practice last Wednesday. He understands that if his offense is going to function properly, it will need more out of Jeanty after he led all rookies in rushing yards (975) and yards from scrimmage (1,321). With a better scheme in place, improvement on the offensive line, and a year of experience, Jeanty, who is being drafted as RB7, is in a position to break out.
New York Jets RB Breece Hall will be an important part of what the Jets do on offense, according to offensive coordinator Frank Reich. 'Listen, it's certainly going to be no secret or surprise to say that we're going to want to run the football, and so we'll continue to emphasize that,' Reich said. 'These guys ran the ball pretty well last year, so we'll build on that.'
Footballguys view: While Hall has never finished better than 13th in rushing yards in a season, he hasn't been the issue. The limited touches working in an offense, throwing the ball in catch-up mode, were more responsible. But we've seen Hall used in the passing game. He was a true dual threat in 2023 (he was RB2 overall that season) and 2024, when he produced a combined 133 receptions. The Jets should get improved quarterback play. Geno Smith is an upgrade over Justin Fields, and additions to the receiving corps should create space for Hall in the run game.
Seattle Seahawks RB Zach Charbonnet (knee) has not been seen at the voluntary workouts this offseason.
Footballguys view: No surprise here. Charbonnet suffered a torn ACL in the Seahawks' divisional round win over the 49ers last postseason, and didn't have surgery to repair the injury until February. Seahawks HC Mike Macdonald said Charbonnet is "not going to miss the whole year." We expect Charbonnet to be on PUP to begin the regular season. That means 2026 first-round pick Jadarian Price will have the opportunity to be the team's lead back in Week 1. We see Price as an RB2/3 with upside in that role, and he could keep that role for much of the regular season as Charbonnet continues to recover.

New Orleans Saints RB Kendre Miller is not guaranteed to be the No. 2 back if RB Alvin Kamara does not return to the team, according to Mike Triplett of New Orleans Football, and Triplett believes the Saints would 'go shopping' for a reliable backup if Kamara is not with the team.
Footballguys view: Miller has failed to endear himself to Kellen Moore and his coaching staff going into the last year of his rookie deal after the team drafted him in the third round back in 2023. Last year's sixth round pick Devin Neal and Broncos 2024 fourth round pick Audric Estime both looked competent after Kamara and Miller went down last year, and either of them could beat out Miller for a roster spot whether Kamara is with the team this year or not.

Free-agent RB Carlos Washington Jr. (Falcons) signed with the Miami Dolphins Thursday, May 21. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The team also waived TE Jalin Conyers.
Footballguys view: Washington spent the last three years on the Falcons practice squad. He's a versatile back who has a chance to make the Dolphins as their fourth running back behind De'Von Achane, Jaylen Wright, and Ollie Gordon II after priority UDFA signing Le'Veon Moss retired shortly following Miami signing him when he went undrafted this year.
Free agent RB Salvon Ahmed (Colts) and DB Anthony Johnson Jr. (Giants) signed with the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday, May 21. In a corresponding move, they waived RB Deion Hankins.
Footballguys view: Ahmed suffered a serious ankle injury in camp last year, but was declared fully healthy and will vie for a roster spot behind D'Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai in Chicago. Ahmed's initial burst was NFL quality in his cup of coffee with the Dolphins earlier in his career, so we shouldn't completely write him off.

Carolina Panthers RB Montrell Johnson (undisclosed) was waived from the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, May 20, after the two sides reached an injury settlement.
Link to storyFree-agent RB Carlos Washington Jr. (Falcons) is working out for the Miami Dolphins Wednesday, May 20, according to a source.
Link to storyCleveland Browns RB Quinshon Judkins (ankle, leg) is participating in individual drills during the voluntary workout Wednesday, May 20.
Footballguys view: Judkins dislocated his ankle and fractured his fibula against the Bills in Week 16 and missed the final two games of the season. According to multiple reports, Wednesday was a light practice, but Judkins was out there moving around well, and there was no noticeable sign of a brace or other support on the leg. Judkins had 827 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in 14 games last season. An upgraded offensive line and a new, offensive-minded head coach in Todd Monken could benefit Judkins this season. He's currently being drafted as RB22.
Denver Broncos fourth-round pick RB Jonah Coleman signed his rookie four-year deal Wednesday, May 20. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
Footballguys view: While he starts his career in Denver behind veteran J.K. Dobbins and second-year man RJ Harvey, Coleman is a tough, physical runner with three-down capabilities due to his ability to catch passes and pass protect. He's an interesting prospect with an RB48 ADP that puts him in the same tier with Jacksonville's Chris Rodriguez Jr., the Giants' Tyrone Tracy Jr., Tennessee's Tyjae Spears, and Detroit's Isiah Pacheco.
Carolina Panthers RB Montrell Johnson and TE Bryce Pierre were reverted from waived-injured to injured reserve, according to a source on Tuesday, May 19.
Link to storyBuffalo Bills RB James Cook was not at the team's OTAs on Tuesday, May 19. This was a voluntary session for the team.
Footballguys view: There's no reporting -- or even speculation -- on the reason for today's absence. So there's no need to get too far in front of this. We'll watch for more and report back as needed. Cook, who got a contract extension last season, has rushed for 1,000 yards in three straight seasons, including a career-best 1,621 in 2025 for his first-ever rushing title. He also posted a 2024 campaign where he was one of only three players with 18 or more touchdowns, as his 16 rushing scores tied for the most in the league. We'll follow up as needed.
Miami Dolphins RB De'Von Achane reported to organized team activities Tuesday, May 19.
Footballguys view: The Dolphins' new brass made a statement by rewarding Achane with a four-year, $64 million contract extension last week. Achane, who led the league with 5.7 yards per carry in 2025, has been around the building throughout the offseason, head coach Jeff Hafley said. "It's not like he just showed up after he signed his contract," Hafley said. "He's a great player, and I'm really glad we have him." Achane finished 2025 with 1,350 rushing yards with eight touchdowns, plus 67 receptions for 488 yards with four TDs. Expect to pay a first-round price to secure his services.
New York Giants RB Cam Skattebo said that he's 'feeling great' and that he's 'ready to go for Week 1' at New York Giants Town Hall on Monday, May 18.
Footballguys view: Skattebo's rookie campaign ended in Week 8 last year with a gruesome-looking dislocated ankle injury. He told reporters at the end of last season that he was making progress and even hoped to do some light work in the offseason. That won't be the case, at least not in terms of doing team drills. Even though he feels great, Skattebo is still "a little ways off" from a return to the field. Training camp is still two months away, and the 2026 season is even further out, so we'll continue to monitor.
Carolina Panthers RB Montrell Johnson Jr. (undisclosed) and TE Bryce Pierre (undisclosed) were waived/injured Monday, May 18.
Link to storyUndrafted free-agent RB Miles Davis (Utah State) agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers Monday, May 18, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyUndrafted free-agent RB Anderson Castle (Duke) signed with the Indianapolis Colts Monday, May 18. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The team also waived RB Jordon Vaughn.
Link to storyHouston Texans RB Woody Marks said he is 'very excited' about the addition of RB David Montgomery to the running backs' room, and he is already forming a dynamic partnership with him. 'Just looking back at the clips with him and (Detroit Lions RB) Jahmyr Gibbs, it looked like they was having so much fun out there,' Marks said. 'When the running back room doing good and everybody blocking, it's a party in the running back room. So, we're looking to have that same joy him and (Gibbs) had bringing it down here in Houston.
Footballguys view: In Marks' rookie season, he led the Texans with 703 rushing yards on 196 attempts (3.6 yards per carry), two touchdowns, including 24 receptions for three receiving TDs. It was quite an impressive campaign for the 2025 fourth-round pick out of USC, as he led Houston's RB room filled with veterans like Nick Chubb, Dameon Pierce, and Dare Ogunbowale. This year, ADP indicates that Montgomery is of more interest to fantasy investors. The former Lion is RB25. Marks is going as WR43.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Sean Tucker appears to be in line to be the No. 3 back behind RBs Bucky Irving (shoulder) and newcomer Kenneth Gainwell. 'Right now, Bucky is on track to be ready to go. I think the combination of Kenny and Bucky are very similar as far as the skill set. Weight, size, all that,' running backs coach Skip Peete said. 'They're both capable of running the ball and running routes, catching and all that. They're not very large people, but they're willing pass protectors. Sean has continued to improve. He flashes sometimes, and he does a good job, and I think he will continue to get better.'
Footballguys view: Tucker has shown the ability to produce in short-yardage situations. He scored five of his seven touchdowns from within six yards of the goal line last year. Listed at 195 pounds, Irving, who is coming off shoulder surgery, isn't a prototypical lead tailback in terms of size. After he missed seven games in the previous campaign, Gainwell and Tucker could turn the backfield into a committee under new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, who drew criticism for his inconsistent usage of star running back Bijan Robinson in Atlanta. It's a backfield to monitor in coming weeks.

New England Patriots RB Myles Montgomery, an undrafted rookie from UCF, received a guaranteed contract of $272,500, the richest of 12 UDFAs the teams signed. That's a reflection of the competition from other teams to ink Montgomery. He is expected to challenge for the No. 3 RB job with Terrell Jennings, Lan Larison and Jam Miller.
Footballguys view: According to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss, those close to the 23-year-old Montgomery say the Patriots appealed to him because of the opportunity to compete, and also the approach and success of the coaching staff. Of course, Montgomery faces a tough battle to work his way into the mix.
Undrafted free-agent RB Miles Davis (Utah State) will work out for the Carolina Panthers, according to a source.
Link to storyUpdating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bucky Irving (shoulder) will be a limited participant in organized team activities and should be completely healthy by the beginning of training camp.
Footballguys view: In the meantime, free agent pickup Kenneth Gainwell and RB3 extraordinaire Sean Tucker will get a head start in new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson's offense. Irving is still the most valuable fantasy running back on the Bucs, but after Robinson called the backs interchangeable, the ADP spread between him and Gainwell shouldn't be five rounds.
Las Vegas Raiders RB Mike Washington Jr. should have a chance to earn a solid role as a change-of-pace back for the Raiders during his rookie season, in the opinion of Raiders.com's Levi Edwards.
Footballguys view: Washington has a great size/speed combination. He's a powerful back who can punish defenders or run by them. Washington needs to be better in pass protection and ball security if he's going to play as a change-of-pace option behind Ashton Jeanty.
Baltimore Ravens RB Justice Hill will likely be the No. 2 running back for the Ravens in 2026 if he can show that he is healthy, in the opinion of BaltimoreRavens.com's Clifton Brown.
Footballguys view: Hill is a seasoned veteran who can be relied on as a three-down player. He won't get on the field much unless Derrick Henry is banged up or needs a breather. That means his fantasy value would be low unless the opportunity changes - and then Hill could at least be an RB3/flex option with a larger role. Rasheen Ali and rookie Adam Randall will push Hill for the no.2 job.

New England Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson is expected to increase his production in 2026, in the opinion of Matt Legros of Patriots Wire on Saturday, May 16.
Footballguys view: Stevenson will continue to work in tandem with TreVeyon Henderson, just like he did last season. In 2025, Stevenson finished the year as the no.22 fantasy back in standard-scoring leagues. Expect him to finish in a similar spot despite the speculation that he could see an increase in production.

Houston Texans RB Woody Marks said offensive coordinator Nick Caley has had him working on his route running this offseason.
Footballguys view: Marks has big-play ability anytime he touches the ball. It would make sense for the Texans to have him work on his receiving ability. David Montgomery was added to work with Marks in an RBBC. With Montgomery likely the lead back, and Marks playing more of a receiving-back role, we could see Marks settling in as a deep flex play for Fantasy GMs.
Las Vegas Raiders head coach should be expected to use more 12 and 13 personnel plays to help out RB Ashton Jeanty in 2026, according to ESPN's Ben Solak.
Footballguys view: The Raiders best pass catcher is a tight end - Brock Bowers - and they also have 2023 second round pick Michael Mayer and experienced journeyman Ian Thomas. Jack Bech is a good blocker at wide receiver and he could be used all over the formation as both a blocker and receiver. We should trust Klint Kubiak to set Jeanty up for success, making him worth a late first or early second round pick even though the Raiders offense let him and his fantasy teams down last year.
Dallas Cowboys RB Malik Davis is believed to be the favorite to land the team's RB2 role, according to Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Nick Harris.
Footballguys view: This is an important backup running back battle to watch. The Cowboys were among the league leaders in running back scores, with 16, and their offensive line had some bad injury luck. Their defense should also be improved, so this might be a plug and play situation if Javonte Williams misses time. 2025 fifth round pick Jaydon Blue and seventh round pick Phil Mafah are also contenders to be the top backup to Williams.
Undrafted free-agent RB Jalen Berger (UCLA) worked out for the Indianapolis Colts Thursday, May 14, according to a source.
Link to storyMiami Dolphins RB De'Von Achane reportedly agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension worth $68 million - including $32 million guaranteed - to remain with the team on Wednesday, May 13.
Link to storyDenver Broncos RB Deuce Vaughn was waived on Tuesday, May 12.
Footballguys view: Vaughn entered the league with the Dallas Cowboys as a sixth-round pick out of Kansas State in the 2023 NFL draft. He totaled 168 yards from scrimmage on 50 touches in 14 career games in Dallas before landing on Denver's practice squad last summer. He did not appear in any games last season.

Miami Dolphins RB Le'Veon Moss was placed on the reserve/retired list on Tuesday, May 12.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bucky Irving (shoulder) will be limited at the start of OTAs.
Footballguys view: Irving is recovering from off-season shoulder surgery. According to local reports, the hope is that he'll be fully cleared by training camp. While he has been participating in rehab, team officials are taking a cautious approach to his return to full practice. We'll be watching for more on Irving in coming weeks. In the meantime, free-agent addition Kenneth Gainwell will get more work as the team installs new coordinator Zac Robinson's scheme.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Zac Robinson told the media that RB Bucky Irving and RB Kenneth Gainwell, 'can kind of match each other in certain ways with what they can do in the pass game.'
Footballguys view: Gainwell, who was signed to replace the departed Rachaad White, rushed for 537 yards and five touchdowns on 4.7 yards per carry, and caught 73 passes for 486 yards and three touchdowns for the Steelers last year. He eclipsed 1,000 scrimmage yards on the season and was voted by his teammates as Steelers team MVP. With Irving coming off shoulder surgery performed earlier this year, Gainwell will get a chance to get a head start in the team's new offense. We expect a timeshare with Irving leading the way, but Gainwell's progress should be monitored.

Free-agent FB Evan Hull (Saints) signed with the Houston Texans Monday, May 11. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The team also waived TE Luke Lachey.

Atlanta Falcons RB Carlos Washington Jr., WR Deven Thompkins and TE Brandon Frazier were released Monday, May 11.
Link to storyUndrafted free-agent RB Kadarius Calloway (New Mexico State) signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday, May 11. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyTampa Bay Buccaneers RB Owen Wright and WR Noah Short were waived Monday, May 11.
Link to storyFree-agent RB Ameer Abdullah (Colts) signed an undisclosed deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars Monday, May 11. RB Ja'Quinden Jackson was waived.
Footballguys view: Abdullah, who turns 33 in June, spent last season with the Colts, mainly playing special teams. However, he did have 60 yards rushing with one touchdown, along with 16 catches for 99 yards. He spent the previous three seasons with the Raiders, posting 311 rushing yards with two TDs plus 40 catches for 261 yards with three touchdowns in 2024. Expect far more special teams work than offensive production if he makes this roster.
Ameer Abdullah player page
Denver Broncos RB Jonah Coleman might be in line for the No. 3 job behind RBs J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey. He was selected with the team's second pick, and he is tough, and Coleman can catch passes and pass protect, which should endear him to head coach Sean Payton.
Footballguys view: With Dobbins injured and unavailable down the stretch last year, Harvey was inefficient as the primary back. As a result, the Broncos entered the offseason looking to bolster the ground attack. That's precisely why they used their second pick on Coleman. Coleman is a tough, physical running back with three-down capabilities due to his ability to catch passes and pass protect. According to SI.com's Justin Melo, Sean Payton will immediately fall in love with his commitment and rugged approach.
Washington Commanders sixth-round draft choice RB Kaytron Allen signed a four-year contract with the Commanders Friday, May 8. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Allen is already making noise in rookie minicamp and should have the edge to be the short yardage back and game finisher to begin the season, with a chance to lead the team in carries with the new under center running game that he is well-suited for. Allen is an excellent assignment sound runner, but he doesn't have an impressive burst or quickness.
Los Angeles Chargers RB Keaton Mitchell was not tendered by the Baltimore Ravens because of his salary figure, as well as his lack of flexibility. 'He was gonna make over $3 million this year based on the system, which was a restricted free agency system, the tender,' general manager Eric DeCosta said. 'Again, not a real special teams guy. A talented space runner. He's not necessarily the most dynamic pass-catching back, so then it becomes, well, would you rather have (Derrick Henry) on the field or Keaton?'

Seattle Seahawks RB Kenny McIntosh (knee) is a speedy back who has battled knee injuries in the early part of his career, including a torn ACL suffered in training camp last summer. 'He's coming along,' head coach Mike Macdonald said last month. 'It's tough to put a timetable to it. He's training his tail off. I think it's one of those deals where, 'Hey, let's just keep hitting those benchmarks until we can evaluate what it's going to look like in the fall.''
Link to storyKenny McIntosh player page
Seattle Seahawks RB Zach Charbonnet (knee) continues to recover from surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered during the Divisional Round of the playoffs. He is expected to return at some point this season, but head coach Mike Macdonald doesn't know exactly when Charbonnet will be back. 'I can't give you a timeline right now, but I can tell you he's killing it as we knew he would,' coach Mike Macdonald said during the draft. 'With these long-term injuries -- I say it all the time, you've just got to stack these things. You have to be able to get to the next thing and go rip it, and that's what he's doing. I'm excited for Zach.'
Footballguys view: The Seahawks can afford to be conservative with Charbonnet's return after taking Jadarian Price at the end of the first round of the draft. He isn't worth taking in typical leagues because his ceiling even when he returns isn't very high.
Zach Charbonnet player page
Seattle Seahawks RB Emanuel Wilson is a bigger back at 5-foot-10 and 226 pounds, who gives the team a power runner while RB Zach Charbonnet (knee) is on the shelf recovering from ACL surgery in February. Despite the absence of Charbonnet, likely until later in the regular season, Wilson still has to contend with top healthy holdover RB George Holani and rookie draft pick RB Jadarian Price for the top spot on the depth chart.
Footballguys view: If Price isn't ready for prime time - he was a back up in college because he played with Jeremiyah Love - then Wilson will be the primary early down and goal line back for the Seahawks. He's worth a late round pick in best ball leagues and an end of the bench spot in deep dynasty leagues.
