Updating previous report, Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is not expected to be placed on the Reserve/Injured list because of his ankle injury, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Footballguys view: While the expectation isn't an IR stay, the team doesn't have an exact timeline for McCarthy's return yet. They'll see how he responds to treatment this week. "Hearing from our medical staff, it's one of those things that tends to be much worse today than it probably was in the moment for him, with adrenaline and everything," O'Connell said. The reported timeline is two to four weeks. Carson Wentz will start in McCarthy's absence. |

Link to storyWashington Commanders TE John Bates (groin) is considered a long shot to play in Week 3, according to head coach Dan Quinn.
Footballguys view: Bates has been a steady veteran presence in the Commanders' offense, valued for his ability to block in the run game while also providing a reliable outlet in short-yardage situations. Losing him doesn't just take away a receiving option; it also affects how Washington can protect their quarterback and set up their running attack. With Bates sidelined, the stage is set for second-year man Ben Sinnott to work alongside starter Zach Ertz. The Commanders drafted him with the expectation he could grow into a versatile piece of their offense, and now that development may need to come sooner than expected. |

Washington Commanders WR Noah Brown (groin) is considered a long shot to play in Week 3, according to head coach Dan Quinn.
Footballguys view: Brown suffered the injury in the third quarter of Thursday night's loss to the Packers. Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane moved up in the receiving rotation behind Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel with Brown out. |

Washington Commanders RB Austin Ekeler (Achilles) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Sept. 15.
Footballguys view: No surprise there. Ekeler suffered a season-ending (and possibly career-ending) torn Achilles tendon in Green Bay last Thursday night. Ekeler was a critical piece to the Commanders' offensive success last season, with 733 total yards and four touchdowns, and looked to be just as impactful in 2025 before his injury. With Ekeler out, Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Jeremy McNichols, and Chris Rodriguez Jr. are the remaining backs on the active roster. Croskey-Merritt is expected to be the starter. The team also added former Cardinal and Buccaneers RB Chase Edmonds to their practice squad. |

Baltimore Ravens FB Patrick Ricard (calf) is considered week-to-week because his recovery from a calf injury is going slower than the team anticipated, according to head coach John Harbaugh.
Footballguys view: Ricard, who is coming off a First Team All-Pro season, hasn't practiced in nearly a month due to a calf strain. With both TE Isaiah Likely (foot) and Ricard missing the first two games, the Ravens have leaned on tight ends Charlie Kolar and Zaire Mitchell-Paden, activated off the practice squad, to take their place. Likely could return soon, but Mitchell-Paden has been an effective blocker and could remain to help cover for Ricard's absence. |
Minnesota Vikings RB Aaron Jones (hamstring) is unlikely to play in Week 3 because of the hamstring injury he suffered during the Week 2 game, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Footballguys view: The Vikings operated with a tandem at running back in Week 2, with Jones drawing the start but Jordan Mason logging more offensive snaps. Assuming Jones is out on Sunday, Mason projects as the clear starter. Pro Football Focus' Nathan Jahnke notes that Mason demonstrated the ability to handle heavy workloads with the 49ers last season, topping an 80 percent snap share in some games. Similarly, the Vikings showed a willingness to give Jones 80 percent of snaps when healthy, indicating the staff is comfortable using a true workhorse when necessary. We'll continue to monitor this situation in coming days. |

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy (ankle) is not expected to play in the Week 3 game because of a sprained ankle, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Footballguys view: The injury is not expected to be long-term, but it means Carson Wentz is Minnesota's likely starter for Week 3 against the Bengals. McCarthy played most of Sunday's game behind a patchwork offensive line after center Ryan Kelly and left tackle Justin Skule left Sunday's game early because of concussions, so that's worth watching as well. Wentz got starts with the Rams and Chiefs in Week 18 the last two years, with starters resting. Sunday, if McCarthy is out, will be Wentz's first start with a team at full strength since 2022 with the Commanders. |
Free-agent WR Dalen Cambre (Giants) was signed to the New York Giants practice squad Monday, Sept. 15, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Link to storyJacksonville Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr. (wrist) was bothered by a wrist injury during the Week 2 game, according to head coach Liam Coen.
Footballguys view: Coen told reporters the wrist may have hampered the second-year receiver during a loss to the Bengals, a game in which Thomas dropped two crucial passes and caught four passes for 49 yards, despite being targeted by Trevor Lawrence 12 times. "He's kind of got a couple of things going on," Coen said. The coach wasn't specific about when the injury took place, but Thomas didn't mention he was hurt when talking to the media in the locker room after the game. He also didn't appear on any of the team's injury reports last week. We'll be watching for more. |

San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones was 7-for-12 for 121 yards, three touchdowns and no INTs with a 132.3 passer rating on third down in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints.
Footballguys view: To be fair, Jones was effective throughout. In particular, his ability to play the roll-out game fits well in Shanahan's system. Jones targeted the intermediate level of the field (10-19 air yards) on 35.9 percent of his attempts, his highest rate in a game since 2021. He completed 9 of 14 attempts when targeting the intermediate area for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Sunday marked only the second time in Jones' career he's thrown for 250-plus yards and three TDs (once in 2023). It wasn't all perfect, but Jones gives the 49ers a viable option when Brock Purdy can't go. |

New York Jets QB Justin Fields (concussion) is in the concussion protocol and out of practice Monday, Sept. 15. He will have to practice in order to play in Week 3, head coach Aaron Glenn said. QB Tyrod Taylor is being prepared to start this week in case he is needed.
Footballguys view: Coach Aaron Glenn said Fields will continue to be evaluated. As previously noted, if Fields is unable to play Sunday at Tampa Bay, veteran backup Tyrod Taylor would start for New York. The Jets' next practice is Wednesday, and Glenn acknowledged Fields would need to be cleared from the concussion protocol and get in some time on the field if he's going to play against the Buccaneers. |

Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (toe) will require surgery on his turf toe injury and miss a minimum of three months.
Footballguys view: Burrow was hurt in the second quarter of Sunday's 31-27 win over the Jaguars. Backup Jake Browning has proven capable in the past. On Sunday, he was 21-of-32 passing for 241 yards, with three total touchdowns (and three interceptions). Adding optimism for fantasy investors, Ja'Marr Chase came through with 14 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown, and Tee Higgins broke free on a 42-yard score in the third quarter with Browning at the helm. The hope is that Browning can continue to drive and keep their values high over the next three months, and possibly more. |
