Bills | Joe Brady promoted to head coach in Buffalo Tue Jan 27, 12:01 PM
The Buffalo Bills are promoting offensive coordinator Joe Brady to become the club's new head coach. Brady has agreed to terms on a five-year deal.
Footballguys view: Brady arrived in Buffalo as the quarterbacks coach in 2022. He became the interim offensive coordinator in 2023, after the in-season firing of Ken Dorsey. Brady previously worked as the Panthers' offensive coordinator from 2020 to 2021. Still only 36 years old, he now gets his shot, with the reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen on his side.
Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers withdrew from the Buffalo Bills' head coaching search.
Footballguys view: After five years away, Rivers made his return to the NFL this season with the Colts. He started three games down the stretch. Considering his age and long layoff, Rivers performed admirably, tossing four touchdowns and three interceptions in three games, all losses. It also put him in the head coaching discussion. Reports suggest that Rivers, 44, may have pulled out of the role for family reasons. He may consider a future in coaching in the NFL down the road, but now is not the right time, per the NFL Network.

Buffalo Bills CB Tre'Davious White was fined $14,222 by the National Football League for his outburst at an official who had flagged him for pass interference during overtime of the AFC Divisional Round game against the Denver Broncos. He was charged with unsportsmanlike conduct for removing his helmet to yell at the official and was penalized on the play, which moved the football half the distance to the goal and made it easier for the Broncos to kick a game-winning field goal.

Washington Commanders running backs coach and run game coordinator Anthony Lynn completed an interview Saturday, Jan. 24 with the Buffalo Bills for the team's head-coaching vacancy.

Link to storyFormer NFL QB Philip Rivers will interview for the head coaching vacancy of the Buffalo Bills on Friday, Jan. 23.
Footballguys view: After essentially operating as an on-field NFL coach who was throwing the ball for the Colts, Rivers will hope to make the jump from high school coaching to the pros. Josh Allen's physical traits are undeniable, but a bit of coaching from someone with a deep understanding of pre-snap coverage and disguises could help him elevate to a new level and extend his career.

Buffalo Bills TE Dalton Kincaid (knee) played the entire 2025 season with a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his knee, according to TE Dawson Knox.
Footballguys view: Kincaid has dealt with chronic injuries since coming into the league and navigated through others this season, in addition to the reported PCL. Just this year, we saw how PCL injuries impacted players like Brock Bowers, Drake London, and Josh Jacobs. It's a tough injury to play through. Assuming Kincaid can get healthy for next season, he'll be a solid post-hype sleeper to target in drafts.

Former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel will interview for the Buffalo Bills head coaching vacancy Friday, Jan. 23.
Footballguys view: Despite accepting the Chargers' OC job a few days ago, McDaniel hasn't removed his name from coaching considerations. Affording McDaniel a dual-threat quarterback like Josh Allen and a speedster like James Cook could be fun, and that's why the Bills' coaching job is the most sought-after in this cycle.
Former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll interviewed for the head coaching vacancy of the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, Jan. 22.
Footballguys view: Daboll did great things with Josh Allen when he was previously with the Bills as their OC. He's getting plenty of interest as an offensive coordinator this offseason, and Daboll did get interest from the Titans for their head coaching vacancy. Going back to Buffalo, this time as the head coach, might be the best landing spot.
Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen (foot) might need a foot procedure in the offseason, according to general manager Brandon Beane.
Footballguys view: The operation would not keep him out long enough to jeopardize his participation in OTAs. However, the Bills might choose to ease him into action during the offseason. After years of falling short with Sean McDermott, Allen is looking to make (and win) a Super Bowl for the first time in his career.

Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo has been requested for an interview for the Buffalo Bills head coaching vacancy.
Link to storyFormer Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott highlighted roster weaknesses in a meeting with general manager Brandon Beane and team owner Terry Pegula five weeks ago, but sources said neither Beane nor Pegula was pleased with McDermott's assessment. There are unnamed players that held McDermott in high regard that are skeptical of the decision to fire McDermott.
Footballguys view: Despite the common outside view that Josh Allen's supporting cast was what has mainly held the Bills back in their Super Bowl quest, WGRZ's Vic Carucci contends Beane managed to convince Pegula that coaching was the primary culprit. Carucci went on to suggest that how he pulled that off is hard to understand, considering McDermott might very well have done the best work of his career in leading the Bills to a 12-5 record with glaring weaknesses at wide receiver and on the defensive line. Whatever the case, the search for McDermott's replacement is on.
Free-agent RB Frank Gore Jr. (Bills), WR Stephen Gosnell (Bills) and WR Mecole Hardman (Bills) signed Reserve/Future contracts with the Buffalo Bills Monday, Jan. 19. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Buffalo Bills RB James Cook had a league-leading 935 rushing yards before contact during the 2025 regular season.
Footballguys view: Cook finished 2025 with 1,621 yards rushing, topping all NFL RBs. He was also second among running backs in yards per carry (minimum five games played), with a rate of 5.2 yards per attempt during the regular season. Cook, who finished the season as RB6 with 18.1 points per game, ended up with 12 games with 100-plus scrimmage yards (tied for most in the NFL), and the Bills were 11-1 in those games. They were 1-4 when he had fewer than 100 yards, further proving his worth to that offense. He'll be drafted as an RB1 in 2026.
Buffalo BIlls general manager Brandon Beane was promoted to president of football operations Monday, Jan. 19.
Footballguys view: With Buffalo showing long-term confidence in Beane, he not only has received more responsibilities, but the move also illustrates owner Terry Pegula's trust in Beane's abilities and view of the organization. What the promotion will also do is put a spotlight on the work he is doing if the team falls short again. Beane, 49, now has full control of the football side of the team, which is a sign he will have more time with the new coach -- after he hires one -- to put in place whatever changes he sees fit.
The Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott following nine years helming the team. McDermott's firing comes after the Buffalo Bills fell in the Divisional Round against the Denver Broncos in overtime on Saturday.
Footballguys view: McDermott won 106 games over nine years in Buffalo, including playoffs. But another disappointing playoff exit has change coming to Buffalo. The Bills are retaining GM Brandon Beane, who will help lead the team's first coaching search since 2017. The Bills' firing of McDermott makes it 10 total head-coaching openings, with the Giants' hiring of John Harbaugh and the Falcons' hiring of Kevin Stefanski filling two so far. As NFL Network's Mike Garafolo suggested, this is as wild a firing and hiring cycle as we've seen in quite some time, if ever.
Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen completed 25 of his 39 pass attempts for 283 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in a 33-30 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos in the Divisional Round. He added 12 carries for 66 yards and lost two fumbles, and RB James Cook rushed 24 times for 117 yards, caught two passes for 24 yards and lost a fumble. RB Ray Davis didn't log a carry, but he did catch two passes for 33 yards. TE Dalton Kincaid caught six passes for a team-high 83 yards and a score, and WR Khalil Shakir finished with 75 receiving yards on a team-high seven receptions. WR Keon Coleman caught a 10-yard touchdown, and WR Mecole Hardan hauled in a four-yard score. TE Dawson Knox added three receptions for 32 yards, and WR Brandin Cooks caught two passes for 20 yards. S Cole Bishop recorded a team-high 12 tackles, including seven solo stops and two tackles for loss, and CB Cam Lewis finished with 10 tackles and two passes defensed.
Footballguys view: A team can't expect to turn the ball over five times and win on the road in the playoffs, and yet the Bills had multiple to chance to do just that despite being down 23-10 in the second half. This one will haunt Josh Allen the most, as he hadn't committed a turnover in a long time in the postseason coming into this game. The Bills will go into another offseason wondering how to keep this from happening again.

Buffalo Bills TE Dalton Kincaid (knee, calf) was limited in practice all week and no longer appears on the injury report.
Footballguys view: The Broncos defense struggles to stop (or even slow down) tight ends. Kincaid is a big part of what the Bills do through the air, and he could have a nice game in the Divisional Round.

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen (foot, knee, finger) practiced in full on Thursday, Jan. 15, and no longer appears on the injury report.
Footballguys view: Allen certainly isn't close to full strength, but Superman is going to play. With a banged up team around him, Allen will need to do the heavy lifting against a tough Broncos defense on Saturday.

Bills WR Tyrell Shavers has torn his ACL, per coach Sean McDermott.
Footballguys view: It's another massive hit to an already battered wide receiver room. Gabe Davis also suffered a season-ending ACL tear in Sunday's win over the Jaguars, and Joshua Palmer went on IR last week. That leaves Khalil Shakir, Brandin Cooks, and Keon Coleman as Buffalo's top healthy receivers. However, Curtis Samuel (elbow) was designated for return to practice on Tuesday and could be activated from injured reserve ahead of Saturday's divisional-round game in Denver. For Shavers, the timing of this injury makes it likely he'll not be ready for the start of the 2026 season.

Buffalo Bills PK Matt Prater (quadriceps) 'is in a good spot', head coach Sean McDermott said Monday, Jan. 12, as he recovers from a quadriceps injury. Prater is expected to practice somewhat similar to last week, though he might increase reps a little more this week.
Footballguys view: Prater was limited to field goals and extra point attempts in the AFC Wild Card game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Punter Mitch Wishnowsky handled kickoffs. We'll be watching for more.

Buffalo Bills TE Dalton Kincaid (undisclosed) was wearing a walking boot after the Wild Card playoff game, but head coach Sean McDermott said Kincaid should be fine for the Divisional Round game.
Footballguys view: Great news considering the potential outcomes. The tight end has missed five regular-season contests in total due to various injuries, including to his oblique and hamstring. Still, Kincaid has remained as one of the Bills' top targets in the passing game, finishing the regular season second on the team in yards receiving (571) and first in touchdowns receiving with five. During Buffalo's win over the Jaguars in the Wild Card Round, he recorded three receptions for 28 yards and a touchdown. We'll see if he's ready with a short turnaround to a Saturday game in Denver.

Buffalo Bills WR Tyrell Shavers (knee) is being evaluated after injuring his knee during the Wild Card playoff game, according to head coach Sean McDermott.
Footballguys view: Shavers got hurt while returning a punt in the second quarter. He stayed down on the field after the play and was clearly in pain, but he was able to return to action. The 26-year-old wide receiver has appeared in every game for the Bills since the start of the regular season. We'll see if he can keep that streak going on a short week, with the Bills playing in Denver on Saturday.
Buffalo Bills S Jordan Poyer (hamstring) is considered week-to-week because of the hamstring injury he suffered during the Wild Card playoff game and is not expected to be available for the Divisional Round playoff game, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

Bills HC Sean McDermott told reporters that WR Gabe Davis suffered a torn ACL vs. the Jaguars.
Footballguys view: With Davis out, Keon Coleman and Tyrell Shavers could be asked to play greater roles against the Broncos on Saturday. Remember, the Bills were without RB Ty Johnson (ankle) in Jacksonville, and the team placed wide receiver Joshua Palmer on IR last week. In addition, CBS Sports' Tracy Wolfson reported that Shavers (knee) got banged up. None of this is great news for a team playing on a short week.

Buffalo Bills WR Gabe Davis (knee) will have an MRI Monday, Jan. 12. His knee was so swollen that an initial diagnosis was difficult.
Footballguys view: We'll be watching for more on Davis after the MRI. But even if it's not a season-ending injury, it'd be nearly impossible to imagine the six-year pro making a return in time for the AFC Divisional Round, as the Bills are set to play the Broncos in just five days in Denver.
