Carolina Panthers TE Darren Waller will likely be held out of the team's preseason game against the Houston Texans on Friday, Aug. 28. He is expected to take part in some team drills during the joint practice session, however.
| Footballguys view: Waller officially signed with the Panthers last Monday. The 33-year-old would not end up taking part in the joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday nor the ensuing preseason contest on Friday. As for this week, when the Houston Texans come to town, Canales says he expects almost the same for the former Pro Bowl pass catcher. Canales also stated that Waller is not expected to suit up for the preseason finale at Bank of America Stadium on Friday. |

Carolina Panthers WR Xavier Legette (ankle, foot) won't take part in joint practices with the Houston Texans on Wednesday, Aug. 26, and won't play in the team's final preseason game. Legette will continue wearing a walking boot through Thursday, Aug. 27, per head coach Dave Canales.
| Footballguys view: That boot made an appearance this past Friday, as Legette was sidelined for the Panthers' preseason tilt against the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Stadium. Legette is coming off a disappointing 2025, where he experienced dips across the board from his rookie campaign. The 2024 first-rounder amassed 35 receptions for 363 yards and three touchdowns. Carolina will begin their regular season against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Sept. 13. |

| Footballguys view: All offseason long, the expectation has been that Carolina will have Jonathon Brooks and Hubbard in a timeshare, at least to start the season. Canales confirmed that will indeed be the case, with one back starting a series and the other coming in on third downs. While we're set for a 50-50 split to start the season, we've already seen Canales lean more toward one back if someone is playing better, as we saw with Hubbard and Rico Dowdle last season. So, don't be surprised if one or the other seizes more control of the backfield as the season progresses. |

| Footballguys view: The most important outcome here is that Brooks didn't get hurt in his first live game action. Chuba Hubbard is already week-to-week with a hamstring injury, so Brooks could start Week 1 against the mediocre Bears runs defense. Brooks didn't pop any big gains or look like an impressive talent, but the line did him no favors. Nothing from this game should push him down from the new higher ADP he has after Hubbard got hurt in practice this week, but nothing from this game should push him higher either. |
