Colts | Coach hopes Daniel Jones returns Tue Jan 6, 01:00 AM
Indianapolis Colts impending free-agent QB Daniel Jones is a player head coach Shane Steichen hopes returns to the team next season, and Steichen said he believes Jones wants to re-sign with the team.
Footballguys view: The obvious potential complication here is the torn Achilles' Jones sustained on Dec. 7, which ended his season. But Jones on Monday -- less than a month out from the injury and ensuing surgery -- expressed optimism in his recovery timeline. Jones finished his season having completed 68 percent of his passes for 3,101 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions as Jones and Steichen forged the sort of quarterback-playcaller mind-meld that teams across the NFL constantly seek but don't always find. We'll be watching this situation closely in coming weeks.

Indianapolis Colts LB Austin Ajiake signed a one-year contract extension with the Colts Monday, Jan. 5. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Link to storyThe Indianapolis Colts lost their final seven games to complete a historic collapse after an 8-2 start. But the team's ownership has decided not to make significant changes, with the Colts announcing less than three hours after a season-ending loss to the Houston Texans that general manager Chris Ballard and coach Shane Steichen will return for the 2026 season.
Footballguys view: There had been speculation about the pair's futures given the Colts' recent track record, with the team having not won the AFC South since 2014 and missing the playoffs for five straight seasons. But organizationally, the Colts are moving forward steadfastly with a firm plan. The intent is to retain injured quarterback Daniel Jones. Jones will be a free agent in March but is expected to be re-signed. Ownership, led by CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon, has endorsed the plan in recent weeks. Irsay-Gordon will address reporters Monday, according to the Colts.
Indianapolis Colts LB Zaire Franklin posted 12 tackles - seven solo - in a Week 18 loss to the Houston Texans.

Indianapolis Colts TE Tyler Warren caught five of eight targets for 26 yards in a Week 18 loss to the Houston Texans.
Footballguys view: Warren's fantasy value tailed off after Daniel Jones went down, just like the rest of the Colts offense. We will await seeing the Colts plans at quarterback this offseason before taking a stand on whether Warren's 2026 season will more resemble the first half or the second half of his rookie season.
Indianapolis Colts WR Josh Downs caught four of four targets for 61 yards in a Week 18 loss to the Houston Texans.

Indianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Taylor ran for 26 yards on 14 carries in a Week 18 loss to the Houston Texans. He had two catches for 13 yards.
Footballguys view: Taylor didn't even make up the 47 yards he was behind James Cook for the NFL rushing title coming into this game. He looked like a possible fantasy MVP until Daniel Jones went down. He should be a late first round or early second round pick in 2026 fantasy drafts.

Indianapolis Colts QB Riley Leonard completed 21 of 34 for 270 yards and two touchdowns against one interception in a Week 18 loss to the Houston Texans. He ran three times for 21 yards and a score.
Footballguys view: Leonard played well enough to keep the Colts in this game until the end, although part of it came after the Texans pulled some starters, including CJ Stroud. The Colts should consider him a strong candidate to back up whomever they sign in free agency, which could be Daniel Jones, allowing Leonard to run the first team offense for most of the offseason, if not camp. Leonard is getting on the superflex dynasty radar with this performance and the Colts instability at quarterback.
Indianapolis Colts WR Alec Pierce was ejected after making contact with an official in the second half of the Week 18 game against the Houston Texans. He finished with four receptions for 132 yards and two touchdowns on seven targets before departing.
Footballguys view: Pierce has had big games with all three Colts quarterbacks, driving up his price in the upcoming free agent market. He also went over 1000 yards for the season in this game. If Pierce is allowed to leave in free agency, it would leave a big hole in the Colts downfield passing game after they also dealt Adonai Mitchell to the Jets in the Sauce Gardner trade.
Indianapolis Colts CB Cameron Mitchell (calf) suffered a calf injury during the Week 18 game and is considered questionable to return.

Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson (eye) continues to recover from an orbital fracture and an injury to his right eye. He returned to practice in recent weeks, but he remains on the Reserve/Injured list. He is not expected to be activated prior to the Week 18 game against the Houston Texans.
Footballguys view: The future is unknown with the former first-round pick. He's got physical talent, but that's not rare in this league. Richardson needs to stay healthy and prove to himself (and the league) that he can be a franchise quarterback. He's under contract through 2026.

Indianapolis Colts QB Seth Henigan, signed to the practice squad Monday, Dec. 29, could be added to the active roster for the Week 18 regular-season finale against the Houston Texans, but likely only in an emergency role, if at all.
Link to storyIndianapolis Colts QB Riley Leonard will start in Week 18 against the Houston Texans.
Footballguys view: The move to Leonard ends Philip Rivers' run as a starter after coming out of a five-year retirement. Coach Shane Steichen, one of Rivers' closest friends, coaxed Rivers out of retirement because of his intimate knowledge of the offense and leadership capacity. But with the Colts eliminated from playoff contention last weekend, the team had to weigh whether it made sense to continue starting the 44-year-old Rivers. Asked about the prospect of Leonard starting on Sunday, Steichen said, "It will be good for his development." It will be less good for the fantasy outcomes of his supporting cast this week.
Free-agent QB Seth Henigan (Jaguars) was signed to the Indianapolis Colts practice squad Monday, Dec. 29.

Link to storyIndianapolis Colts RB Ameer Abdullah didn't have a carry in Week 17 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he did have a catch for four yards on his lone target.

Indianapolis Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr. (calf) left the Week 17 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he was able to return and finish up the game.
Footballguys view: Pittman's fantasy value has taken a dive since Philip Rivers took over. He returned and finished the day with two catches for 16 yards. His value in 2026 drafts is to be determined as the Colts go into the offseason with a huge question mark at quarterback.
Indianapolis Colts TE Will Mallory had a single 16-yard reception on his lone target against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 17. It was a highlight-reel catch, too, as he was hit in the ribs, while falling down, popping the ball into the air. He ended up tracking the ball and hauling it in with one hand while on the ground.

Link to storyThe Indianapolis Colts are likely to start QB Riley Leonard in Week 18's game versus the Houston Texans, after the team was mathematically eliminated from postseason contention Saturday, Dec. 27, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Footballguys view: Jonathan Taylor is battling with James Cook to win the NFL rushing title, so he may get a lot of run next week, but the Colts chances of beating the Texans with the AFC South champion still undecided will go down with Leonard in at quarterback.
The Indianapolis Colts have declared OG Dalton Tucker, C Tanor Bortolini, RB Tyler Goodson, DE JT Tuimoloau, S Reuben Lowery III and DB George Odum inactive for Week 17.
Link to storyIndianapolis Colts CB Sauce Gardner (calf) is expected to play in Week 17's game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to head coach Shane Steichen. If Gardner is active, this would mark his first game action since Week 13, when he sustained a strained calf against the Houston Texans. He had been listed as questionable on the injury report after logging one limited practice session and one full session during the week.

Indianapolis Colts WR Alec Pierce tallied four receptions, 86 yards, and two touchdowns in a Week 16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Footballguys view: Pierce's value is now at an all-time high, and with him set to hit free agency this offseason, the Colts will likely have competition to retain him. As A to Z Sports' Destin Adam suggested, Pierce has positioned himself well with the most receiving yards of his career (871) and four touchdowns. He'll also be somebody fantasy investors have great interest in next summer, regardless of landing spot.
Indianapolis Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr. caught four of his five targeted passes for 32 yards in a Week 16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Link to storyIndianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Taylor carried the ball 16 times for 46 yards and a touchdown versus the San Francisco 49ers in Week 16. Taylor also caught three passes for 33 yards.

Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers completed 23 of 35 passes for 277 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 16. With the game out of hand late, Rivers was replaced by QB Riley Leonard on the final drive.
Footballguys view: After Rivers played it close to the vest against Seattle in Week 14 -- in his first game in five years -- he opened things up in a significant way Monday night, pushing the ball farther downfield after averaging just 4.4 yards per attempt in his previous game. Unfortunately, the Colts' defense had its most miserable performance of the season. After starting 2025 at 8-2 and in the conversation among title contenders, Indianapolis has now lost five straight and seems destined to miss the playoffs again. But they're not eliminated yet, so expect Rivers to make another start.
