Footballguys view: That's good news for Leonard who is in line to start. If he can't play, then Philip Rivers could be an option for the Colts.

Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones (Achilles) underwent successful surgery on Wednesday, Dec. 10, according to head coach Shane Steichen.
Footballguys view: Good news for Jones here. Achilles' injuries aren't the career killers they used to be, and Jones should be ready for action in training camp next year at the latest. He's set to be a free agent in 2026, but it wouldn't surprise us to see him re-sign with the Colts after enjoying great success before this untimely injury.

Indianapolis Colts QB Riley Leonard (knee) will practice this week, but his status is up in the air for Week 15, according to head coach Shane Steichen.
Footballguys view: The Colts may have to go with Philip Rivers at quarterback. Leonard looked overwhelmed last week, and he's not a great option as a starter - especially now that he's not 100 percent. Let's see what the end of the week practice status looks like, but be prepared to downgrade all your Colts' pass-catchers.
Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers impressed multiple team sources with his arm strength, according to sources. 'I'd still take him at this stage over most 22- to 23-year-old (backups),' according to one source.
Footballguys view: Rivers may have to play for the Colts in Week 15 as Riley Leonard deals with a knee injury he suffered in Week 14. We'll be monitoring the practice reports on Leonard as the week goes on. Rivers is only a fantasy option (if he starts) in superflex leagues, and he's not a great one in that format. This whole move from the Colts reeks of desperation.

Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones (Achilles) was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday, Dec. 9. He will miss the remainder of the 2025 season.

Rookie QB Riley Leonard's status for the Colts' next game, at the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, is still unclear. The team is hoping for more clarity on Wednesday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. When asked on Monday whether Leonard would play Sunday, coach Shane Steichen said, "That's the hope. We'll see how it goes." But source told Schefter on Monday night that Leonard had a strained knee ligament and was considered week-to-week.
Footballguys view: If Leonard can't play, Philip Rivers, who worked out for the team Monday night and was signed to the practice squad Tuesday, might enter the picture. Still remembered fondly at Colts headquarters following his one season with Indianapolis in 2020, Rivers will be reunited with his close friend Steichen. The two previously spent six seasons together in the Chargers organization while Steichen was an assistant coach and Rivers was the team's longtime quarterback. Riley starting would be the desired outcome in Indy, but clearly the team is going to great lengths to prepare if he's not.
Free agent QB Philip Rivers signed with the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
Footballguys view: With starter Daniel Jones (Achilles) out for the season and backup Riley Leonard dealing with a knee injury, the Colts turned to Rivers as an emergency solution. Before the Colts can determine how soon Rivers can play, they have to see how he feels and practices Wednesday and Thursday. But Rivers played in this offense his entire career, and his relationship with coach Shane Steichen will be seamless. So this is more of a physical question than a mental one. The Colts believe Rivers could give them a realistic chance to stay competitive. Leonard's health will also be a factor.

A report on Monday said that quarterback Philip Rivers would work out for the Colts on Tuesday, but things are moving more quickly in Indianapolis. Per multiple reports on Tuesday morning, Rivers actually had his workout with his former team on Monday night. Those reports indicate Rivers, who retired after the 2020 season, threw the ball well during the workout.
Footballguys view: As PFT notes, there's no word on an agreement, and the Colts are believed to be mulling over whether to bring Rivers in as an option to step in at quarterback in the wake of Daniel Jones' season-ending Achilles injury. Rookie Riley Leonard replaced Jones on Sunday, but is dealing with knee soreness that has clouded his availability for Week 15's game against the Seahawks. The Colts currently have Brett Rypien on the practice squad, and he's the only other in-house option, as Anthony Richardson is not a candidate to come off of injured reserve at this time. Stay tuned.
Retired QB Philip Rivers is expected to work out for the Indianapolis Colts Tuesday, Dec. 9, to see if he can join the team's practice squad, according to sources.
Footballguys view: While it's unclear if Rivers, who last played in 2020 with the Colts, is in football shape after being away from the game for so long, he would have intimate knowledge of the Colts' offensive scheme and would be a seamless addition in terms of working with head coach Shane Steichen. The two worked closely together during Steichen's days as the Los Angeles Chargers' offensive coordinator before Rivers' one season with the Colts. Whether Rivers is a viable option remains to be seen. But the Colts believe his familiarity could give them a realistic chance. Monday is Rivers' 44th birthday. Stay tuned.

Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson (eye) will not have his 21-day practice window opened this week, according to head coach Shane Steichen.
Footballguys view: Richardson remains on injured reserve after sustaining an orbital fracture while warming up prior to a game earlier this season. A pole that was attached to a stretch band snapped and impacted Richardson around his eye. "He's still working through it," Steichen said of Richardson. "Obviously it's an eye, it's very delicate. So he's just resting it, and then once the doctors and trainers clear him to be activated - that's where it's at right now. Still just healing up." According to Profootballtalk.com, the Colts don't know when or if he'll be cleared at any point in 2025.

Updating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts QB Riley Leonard (knee) is dealing with a strained ligament in his knee and is considered week-to-week, according to a source. His availability for Week 15 is uncertain at this time.
Link to storyIndianapolis Colts QB Riley Leonard (knee) is dealing with a knee injury, and his availability for Week 15 is uncertain at this point, according to head coach Shane Steichen.
Footballguys view: This news comes on the heels of Steichen confirming that Daniel Jones did suffer a torn Achilles and will be out for the remainder of the season. Steichen said that Leonard is "working through" the injury, and the "hope" is that he will be able to play Sunday against the Seahawks. However, Steichen cannot say that for sure just yet. Anthony Richardson remains on injured reserve, which means the only fully healthy quarterback for the Colts right now is practice squad QB Brett Rypien. He has appeared in 11 games with four starts since entering the NFL in 2019.
Updating previous reports, Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones (Achilles) has been diagnosed with a torn Achilles tendon and will miss the rest of the 2025 season, according to head coach Shane Steichen.
Footballguys view: Jones was playing through what was reported to be a hairline fracture in his left fibula when he went down in the first quarter on Sunday with an injury to his opposite leg. Although a torn Achilles is easily diagnosed, Jones underwent an MRI on Monday to confirm the injury. Jones is headed to free agency and might not be ready to play in Week 1 next season. The Colts and Vikings were both rumored to be in on signing Jones, but the nine-month recovery adds enough uncertainty to cloud the issue.

With Colts starting quarterback Daniel Jones out for the season after tearing an Achilles tendon on Sunday, the next question becomes whether Anthony Richardson will be able to step in. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Richardson -- who suffered an orbital fracture before the Week 6 game against the Cardinals -- has not been cleared to return. Moreover, the Colts don't know when or if he'll be cleared at any point in 2025.
Footballguys view: That leaves rookie Riley Leonard as the starter. Brett Rypien is on the practice squad. On Sunday, the emergency option was tight end Tyler Warren. The fourth overall pick in 2023, Richardson started four games as a rookie and 11 in 2024. The Colts signed Jones to compete with Richardson, and Jones won the job. Richardson remains under contract through 2026. But it's up in the air, at best, as to whether he'll be able to play in any of the final four regular-season games or any postseason games.

Indianapolis Colts TE Tyler Warren caught two of six targets for 15 yards and carried once for two yards in Week 14 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Link to storyUpdating a previous report, Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones (Achilles) will undergo surgery for his torn Achilles. He suffered the injury in Week 14 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He could face a nine-month recovery period which puts him up against the start of the 2026 season.
Footballguys view: The injury leaves the Colts in dire straits at the position. With backup Anthony Richardson Sr. on injured reserve with a facial fracture, rookie Riley Leonard replaced Jones in Jacksonville. He completed 18 of 29 passes for 145 yards and an interception. He ran for a score late. Jones is a pending free agent, though Indy wants him back. We'll be watching for more.

Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones (Achilles) left the Week 14 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the second quarter due to an Achilles injury, and he was quickly ruled out. QB Riley Leonard will take over for the remainder of the game. Jones finishes 5-of-7 for 60 yards, no touchdowns and one interception with one run for four yards.
Footballguys view: This one looked like a season ender, and Jones reacted like he knew it was serious. Rookie sixth round pick Riley Leonard replaced Jones and actually performed better than expected, but still this is crippling for the team and fantasy prospects of everyone in the offense. Jones is headed to free agency and might not be ready to play in Week 1 next season if the achilles is torn as feared. The Colts and Vikings were both rumored to be in on signing Jones, but this throws all of those plans into disarray. This is heartbreaking for Jones who had been playing through a broken fibula and was the main reason the team was in the game last week against the Texans.

Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones (fibula) practiced in full on Friday, Dec. 5, and no longer appears on the injury report.
Footballguys view: This fibula injury has clearly limited Jones' mobility, as he had just one rushing yard last week and appeared limited moving in the pocket. He'll play through this fractured fibula, but that lack of rushing upside pushes him from the plug-and-play QB1 tier down to the streamers.

Indianapolis Colts WR Josh Downs (hip, knee) practiced in full on Friday, Dec. 5, and no longer appears on the injury report.
Footballguys view: Downs is fourth in the Colts' pecking order, giving him a scary floor on a weekly basis. However, he has the occasional boom game and could find some soft spots against the zone-heavy Jaguars. He's a WR4 this week, but carries some fun upside.

Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones (fibula) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 4.
Footballguys view: Jones is likely to play in Week 14 against the Jaguars. This injury means he might be asked to run less, and the team will utilize the rushing attack as much as possible. That makes Jones more of a QB2 for Fantasy GMs out there.

Indianapolis Colts WR Josh Downs (hip, knee) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 4.
Footballguys view: From a DNP on Wednesday, to a full practice on Thursday means Downs is likely to be out there against the Jaguars on Sunday. Downs provides flex appeal as a big-play target for the Colts.

Indianapolis Colts RB Jonathan Taylor leads the NFL with 33 rushes of 10-plus yards, and he is also averaging a league-leading 3.0 yards per rush after first contact.
Footballguys view: Taylor is one of the best in the game. This year, he might be the best running back in all of football. He's the centerpiece of what the Colts do on offense, and Taylor is a big reason why they are a legit Super Bowl contender.
