Cowboys | George Pickens hopes to return Tue Feb 3, 12:24 AM
Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent WR George Pickens said he would like to return to the Cowboys next season but believes his value has gone up after his 2025 season.
Footballguys view: The Cowboys want to keep Pickens, and the team has the franchise tag available to use on the pending free agent, but the question is whether the sides can negotiate a long-term deal. The Cowboys traded with the Steelers for Pickens in the 2025 offseason. Dak Prescott is the best quarterback Pickens has played with, and it showed. His previous best season was 63 receptions for 1,140 yards and five touchdowns in 2023. We'll be following this situation closely as free agency draws nearer.
Free-agent QB Will Grier (Cowboys) signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Dallas Cowboys Monday, Feb. 2. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Dallas Cowboys RB Javonte Williams recorded 25 broken tackles during the 2025 regular season, which ranked second in the NFL in that category.
Footballguys view: Signed to a one-year deal after spending four years with the Denver Broncos, Williams had fewer than four yards per attempt the past two years in the league. But Williams excelled in the Cowboys' zone running scheme. He finished with 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground while averaging 4.8 yards per attempt en route to an RB9 finish in fantasy. Now, the Cowboys have to decide if they're going to bring him back as an unrestricted free agent or allow him to hit the open market.

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott was blitzed 163 times during the 2025 regular season, which ranked second in the NFL.
Footballguys view: Nonetheless, Prescott delivered one of the best seasons of his career. As ESPN.com noted, for the fourth time, he threw for more than 4,000 yards and had at least 30 touchdown passes. He completed at least 60% of his passes in each of the first 15 games. He became the franchise's all-time leader in passing yards (35,989), passing Tony Romo. He is tied for the NFL lead with six 300-yard passing games. He is tied for third in multi-touchdown passing games (10). He also finished the season as QB6 in fantasy points.

Green Bay Packers defensive pass game coordinator Derrick Ansley will have the same title with the Dallas Cowboys, according to a league source.
Link to storyArizona Cardinals cornerbacks coach Ryan A. Smith will join the Dallas Cowboys and fill the same position on their coaching staff.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys WR George Pickens, who is set to become a free agent, is expected to receive the franchise tag, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, but the belief is that Pickens will be seeking a 'long-term deal.' If the Cowboys don't sign him to a long-term contract, some believe Pickens will stay away from the team 'for a large portion of the offseason or even training camp.' Pickens can further apply pressure by refusing to sign the franchise tag.
Footballguys view: Pickens only broke 1,000-plus receiving yards once in his three seasons in Pittsburgh, totaling just 12 touchdowns through the air, so the Cowboys have to decide if he's a one-hit wonder or if playing next to Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb helped unlock Pickens' skill set. Although he did disappear at times, Sports Illustrated pointed out that in the three games Lamb missed due to injury, Pickens caught 19 passes for 359 yards and four touchdowns, showing his ability to carry an undermanned wide receiver room. If tagged, both sides would have until July 15 to reach a deal.
Dallas Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue said his lack of consistency in practice played a role in his sporadic playing time this season. 'I'm trusting my coaches, and just making sure I'm working because, at this level, talent isn't everything,' Blue said. 'I have to make sure I'm putting in work so that I can continue to have those opportunities.'
Link to storyPhiladelphia Eagles defensive backs coach/passing game coordinator Christian Parker has agreed to a deal to become the new defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys CB DaRon Bland (foot) has successful surgery on his left foot in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Jan. 13, the team announced. It's his second straight year Bland has had a procedure done on his left foot. He suffered a fracture in his left foot in training camp leading up to the 2024 season.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys impending free-agent WR George Pickens is believed to be a likely candidate for the franchise tag this offseason, according to ESPN.com's Dan Graziano.
Footballguys view: Pickens (a second-round pick of the Steelers in 2022) is set to be an urestricted free agent in 2026. He had career-high numbers in catches (93), yardage (1,429), and receiving touchdowns (9). A tag would next Pickens a one-year deal around $28 million for 2026. If tagged, Pickens and the Cowboys would have until mid-July to get a long-term contract done.
Free-agent RB Israel Abanikanda and WR Traeshon Holden were assigned to Reserve/Future contracts by the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus was fired Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Footballguys view: The 55-year-old Eberflus held the role for just one year. But over those 17 games, the Cowboys defense gave up 511 points, the first time in 65 years of existence that the franchise had allowed 30 points per game over the course of a season. Under Eberflus, Dallas also gave up 377 yards per contest (3rd-worst in the league), permitted opponents to convert third downs at the highest clip in the NFL, and was ranked 29th out of 32 teams in red zone defense. The Cowboys will now have their fourth defensive coordinator in as many years.
Free-agent WR Parris Campbell (Cowboys) signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Dallas Cowboys Monday, Jan. 5. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Dallas Cowboys CB DaRon Bland (foot) is scheduled to undergo foot surgery next week but should be ready for the 2026 season.
Footballguys view: Bland does not expect the recovery to limit him in offseason workouts and OTAs. He suffered a left foot fracture during 2024's training camp, just after a breakout 2023 season that saw Bland set a new NFL record for most interceptions returned for touchdown in a single season. That sidelined him until Week 12 following surgery in 2024. The Cowboys then signed Bland to a four-year contract extension worth $92 million ($50 million guaranteed) in August, but the foot issues persisted. He missed the final three games this year and finished the season with one interception.
Dallas Cowboys DE Jadeveon Clowney posted three sacks among six tackles in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.

Dallas Cowboys LB Shemar James posted 13 tackles - three solo and one-half TFL - in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys WR Ryan Flournoy caught five of seven targets for 68 yards in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson caught one of two targets for five yards in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys WR George Pickens caught one of three targets for nine yards in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.
Footballguys view: Pickens will be one of the most discussed players this offseason as a free agent that will likely get the franchise tag or a new contract from the Cowboys. Pickens was mostly a difference maker in a positive way during his first season in Dallas, but not always. Negotiations between players and Jerry Jones have a way of going sideways, so we should be ready for anything.
Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb caught his only target for four yards in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.

Dallas Cowboys RB Phil Mafah carried five times for 18 yards with a touchdown in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue carried 16 times for 64 yards and his first career touchdown in a Week 18 loss to the New York Giants.
Footballguys view: Blue has apparently been in and out of the doghouse during his rookie season, but this performance to finish the season is the right note to end on with Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders both free agents after signing only one year deals. Blue is worth a spot at the end of your roster in dynasty leagues and will be a player to monitor throughout the offseason.
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott completed 7-of-11 passes for 70 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 18 game against the New York Giants before giving way to QB Joe Milton III for the second half.
Footballguys view: The Cowboys insisted all week that Prescott would start, but they never said how long he would play in a meaningless Week 18 game. Just another brick in the "no Week 18 championships" wall. The biggest question looming over Prescott this offseason is how the Cowboys will handle George Pickens heading to free agency.

Dallas Cowboys RB Phil Mafah (shoulder) was activated from the Reserve/Injured Designated to Return list on Saturday, Jan. 3. He is expected to join RB Jaydon Blue in the backfield for the Week 18 game against the New York Giants with RBs Javonte Williams and Malik Davis out for the finale.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue is expected to start in Week 18 against the New York Giants. He last appeared in Week 8 against the Denver Broncos, and he has posted 65 rushing yards on 22 carries, or 3.0 yards per carry, with no touchdowns through four games.
Footballguys view: Malik Davis and Javonte Williams have been ruled out, so Blue is in line for a big workload in Week 18. He's been limited this year with Williams having a breakout season and Davis performing well as a reserve. We'll see if Blue can be a reliable option on Sunday against the Giants.
Dallas Cowboys RB Javonte Williams (neck, shoulder) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list on Saturday, Jan. 3.
Footballguys view: It's been a good year for Williams. He finished the season with a career highs of 1,201 rushing yards, 4.8 rushing yards per carry and 11 touchdowns across 16 games. Williams is set to hit free agency, and the Cowboys would like him back if they can afford his services. He'll be one of the hottest backs on the open market later this spring.

Dallas Cowboys OG T.J. Bass (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Jan. 3, along with RB Malik Davis (calf, eye). The team also activated CB Josh Butler (knee) from the Reserve/Injured Designated to Return list. LB Justin Barron was signed from the practice squad, while OL Nick Leverett was elevated from the practice squad.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys WR KaVontae Turpin (foot, shoulder) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 2, and is not on the injury report for Week 18.
Link to storyDallas Cowboys WR Ryan Flournoy (knee) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 2, and is not on the injury report for Week 18.

Link to storyDallas Cowboys RB Javonte Williams (neck, shoulder) did not participate in practice Friday, Jan. 2, and has been ruled out for Week 18.
Footballguys view: No Williams and no Malik Davis means rookie Jaydon Blue should get his chance to shine. While reports about Blue this year have been primarily negative, he's got great speed and big-play upside. The Cowboys should serve him a decent workload, and he can make his week with one big play. He's a viable streamer for desperate managers.

Dallas Cowboys RB Malik Davis (calf, eye) did not participate in practice Friday, Jan. 2, and has been ruled out for Week 18.
Footballguys view: The Cowboys will be down Davis and Javonte Williams in this matchup. If this game had any importance, they would probably lean on Hunter Luepke, a fullback with a pass-catching skill set. However, since the Cowboys are out of playoff contention, they may look to see what they have in rookie Jaydon Blue, making him an appealing streamer in deep leagues.
Dallas Cowboys G T.J. Bass (knee), RB Malik Davis (calf, eye), LB DeMarvion Overshown (concussion), CB Shavon Revel (concussion, neck), and RB Javonte Williams (shoulder, neck) did not practice on Friday, Jan. 2, and have been ruled out for Week 18 against the New York Giants. CB Josh Butler (knee), RB Phil Mafah (shoulder), and DE Payton Turner (ribs) practiced in full on Friday and are listed as questionable. G Tyler Booker (ankle), Caelen Carson (hamstring), DL Kenny Clark (hand), TE Jake Ferguson (calf), WR Ryan Flournoy (knee), G Tyler Smith (knee), WR KaVontae Turpin (shoulder, foot), DL Quinnen Williams (neck), S Donovan Wilson (hip), and DL Perrion Winfrey (personal) practiced in full on Friday and no longer appear on the injury report.

Link to storyDallas Cowboys RB Jaydon Blue could see some snaps in Week 18, according to owner/general manager Jerry Jones.
Footballguys view: Heading into the finale, Blue is running out of time to impress the coaching staff. As SI.com noted, there was no shortage of excitement when the Cowboys drafted Blue. The explosive back not only played a position of need, but also offered sub-4.4 speed, which has been another need. That excitement waned as Blue failed to see the field early in the season. He eventually got a shot when Miles Sanders was injured, but managed just 65 yards on 22 carries before being surpassed by Malik Davis. We'll see if Blue gets some chances to change the perception.
Dallas Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs was waived on Tuesday, Dec. 30. If he goes unclaimed on waivers, he will become a free agent.
Footballguys view: Diggs will become a free agent if he goes unclaimed and would not need to wait until March to sign with another team if he remains a free agent through the end of the regular season. Diggs played in the first six games of the season before landing on injured reserve. He suffered a concussion while at home and also continued recovering from knee issues that limited him to 13 games over the two previous seasons. He returned to play in the last two games.

Dallas Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson (calf) has not been ruled out of the Week 18 game at this time, according to head coach Brian Schottenheimer.
Footballguys view: To be clear, Schottenheimer said if players are healthy, they will play Sunday. It remains to be seen if Ferguson will be healthy enough to hit the field against the Giants. Luke Schoonmaker and Brevyn Spann-Ford are next men up at the position if Ferguson isn't available. We'll monitor this one throughout the week.
