Texans | Nick Chubb still the lead back? Thu Oct 9, 11:55 AM
Houston Texans RB Nick Chubb 'still has the playing time edge' over RB Woody Marks in games where Houston can lean on the run, according to Dan Graziano of ESPN.com.
Footballguys view: It sounds like the Texans' coaching staff views Woody Marks as a pass-catching back, so gamescript will determine playing time for this duo. If the Texans are milking a lead, then Chubb should get carries to close things out. If the Texans are trailing and need to get a comeback win, then Marks could see the field more as the big-play receiving back threat. |

Houston Texans RB Joe Mixon (ankle) could provide clarity on his status in the next month, according to general manager Nick Caserio. Caserio was non-committal on if Mixon will play this year.
Footballguys view: Mixon was placed on the non-football injury list to open camp, and there have not been many updates about either the nature of the injury or a plan to get him back on the field. "He's making progress," Caserio said of Mixon. "I wouldn't put a particular timetable on it . . . Once we kinda get to that period, probably have a better sense of which way it's gonna go for the duration of the year." The Texans rank 16th in the league in rushing yards with Nick Chubb and Woody Marks leading the backfield. |

Houston Texans WR Jayden Higgins caught four passes for 32 yards against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5. He was targeted four times during the game.
Link to storyHouston Texans WR Nico Collins caught four passes for 52 yards and one touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5. He was targeted five times during the game.
Footballguys view: You were hoping for more if you didn't watch the game and saw that the Texans scored 44 points before looking at the box score. Collins touchdown actually came after a Harrison Bryant score came off of the board because of an offensive pass interference call, so it could have been a painful bust day for the Texans #1 receiver. Things are looking up for this offense, so you should still feel good about taking Collins, especially considering how it has gone for some other receivers going in the same range of drafts. |

Houston Texans RB Dameon Pierce rushed for 21 yards on seven carries against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5.
Link to storyHouston Texans RB Woody Marks rushed for 24 yards on seven carries against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5.
Footballguys view: Marks encore from a breakout game was a fantasy zonk. He is still worth carrying through the bye with Nick Chubb's injury history and the arrow for this whole offense pointing up, but Marks Week 5 was a big letdown for fantasy that will make it tough to trust him in lineups until he makes us regret leaving him on the bench. |
Houston Texans RB Nick Chubb rushed for 61 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5.
Footballguys view: One week after rookie Woody Marks had a breakout game that seemed to announce his arrival as the lead back, Chubb got more opportunities against a severely shorthanded Ravens run defense. We'll have to assume that this backfield split will be difficult to project week to week even though there was an ESPN report from Dan Graziano this week that Marks' role would grow. |

Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud went 23-for-27 for 244 yards and four touchdowns against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5. He also rushed for 30 yards on one carry during the game.
Footballguys view: Stroud and this Texans offense have found their groove against the Titans and Ravens defenses. While neither unit is presenting a stiff test right now, that doesn't mean that this momentum won't carry over after the bye. The Texans face the Seahawks after their Week 6 bye, but the rest of the schedule is mostly manageable. Stroud is worth carrying through his bye if most teams in your league roster a backup quarterback. |

Houston Texans OT Trent Brown (non-injury) was added to the team's active roster Saturday, Oct. 4, but he did not travel with the team to Baltimore and will not play in Week 5's game versus the Baltimore Ravens.

Link to storyHouston Texans RB Woody Marks faces the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5, and the Ravens have allowed the sixth-most rushing yards per game this season and a league-high seven rushing touchdowns.
Footballguys view: The rookie is coming on as the weeks roll by in the NFL. Marks rushed 17 times for 69 yards and a touchdown in Houston's Week 4 win against the Titans, adding four catches for 50 yards and a score on five targets. Nick Chubb will continue to get work, but Marks is earning a larger role with his play. We like Marks as an RB2/flex option against the Ravens in Week 5. |
Houston Texans DT Folorunso Fatukasi (shoulder) and DE Denico Autry (knee) did not participate in practice Friday, Oct. 3, and have been ruled out for Week 5. S Jaylen Reed (knee) fully participated in practice but has been ruled out. WR Nico Collins (knee), CB Derek Stingley Jr. (oblique) and TE Harrison Bryant (shoulder) fully participated in practice and are not on the injury report.

Houston Texans WR Nico Collins (knee) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 3, and is not on the injury report for Week 5.
Footballguys view: Collins was limited in Wednesday's practice. He's been practicing in full since then, and there is no reason to think he won't return to his usual workload. |

Houston Texans TE Irv Smith was released Monday, Sept. 29.

Running back Joe Mixon is eligible to return to action now that the Texans have played four games, but there's no change to his status coming in the immediate future. Head coach DeMeco Ryans was asked about Mixon's status at a press conference on Monday, and Ryans responded by saying that he anticipates "opening a window" for defensive lineman Denico Autry and safety Jayden Reed to return to practice.
Footballguys view: Ryan's non-answer is telling. As KPRC 2 Houston's Aaron Wilson reminded his readers, Mixon is out indefinitely with an injury characterized as "tough and complicated," by league sources. There is no specific timetable for when or if he will return this season. Mixon has reportedly sought outside medical help, including nonsurgical procedures, to try to speed up the healing process in what has been a lengthy rehab process. While Nick Chubb has been the lead back, rookie Woody Marks appears to be overtaking his veteran teammate and should be viewed as the top waiver priority for fantasy managers this week. |

Houston Texans WR Christian Kirk caught three passes for 20 yards against Tennessee Titans in Week 4. He was targeted four times during the game.
Footballguys view: Kirk's target total dropped from eight to four and he wasn't able to make an impact in the Texans offense's best performance of the season. He's not worth carrying in typical leagues. |

Houston Texans RB Nick Chubb rushed for 47 yards on 13 carries against the Tennessee Titans in Week 4. He also caught two passes for 15 yards during the game.
Footballguys view: Chubb wasn't bad, but he was outshined by fourth round pick Woody Marks in a game that will probably relegate him to the lesser part of a running back by committee. Chubb still has upside if Marks gets hurt - and the rookie did get banged up, but stayed in the game - but the veteran's chances of being the lead back have disappeared. He could still be a what-the-heck flex against a depleted Ravens defensive line next week. |

Houston Texans RB Woody Marks rushed for 69 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries against the Tennessee Titans in Week 4. He also caught four passes for 50 yards and one touchdown during the game.
Footballguys view: Marks has the look of a player worth the #1 waiver priority or your entire waiver wire bucks wallet. He got a little banged up in between his touchdowns, but had more burst and lateral agility than Nick Chubb, and the offense just looked better when he was out there. Chubb isn't going away and there is still a possibility that Joe Mixon returns at some point this season, but we should consider Marks a high ceiling RB2/Flex at Baltimore next week and going forward. |
Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud went 22-for-28 for 233 yards and two touchdowns against the Tennessee Titans in Week 4. He also rushed for 11 yards on four carries during the game.
Footballguys view: It was going to be time to get really worried about Stroud and this offense if they couldn't have sustained success against the Titans defense. We should all feel better about Stroud as a bye/injury option in 1QB leagues and a superflex/QB2 option after this one. The offense seemed to perk up with more rookie running back Woody Marks, and rookie wide receiver Jayden Higgins caught his first NFL touchdown. Stroud has some fantasy value in time for next week's matchup at Baltimore. |

Houston Texans CB Derek Stingley Jr. (oblique) is set to play in Week 4's game against the Tennessee Titans, although he will not be at 100 percent, according to multiple sources. He had been listed as questionable on the injury report after participating in just one of Houston's three practice sessions on a limited basis during the week.
Link to storyHouston Texans RB Nick Chubb faces the Tennessee Titans in Week 4, and the Titans have allowed six rushing touchdowns in three games while allowing the fourth-most rushing yards and fourth-most yards per carry.
Footballguys view: Chubb split snaps almost 50-50 with fourth round pick Woody Marks last week, but if the Texans can finally play with a lead against rookie quarterback Cam Ward this week, Chubb could get on track. Every opponent's backfield this year has over 100 yards rushing and at least one score, so Chubb is a good flex play this week, and Marks could come through as a desperation play. |

Houston Texans CB Derek Stingley Jr. (oblique) was limited during practice Friday, Sept. 26, and is listed as questionable for Week 4. C Jake Andrews (ankle), WR Nico Collins (knee) and OT Tytus Howard (illness) fully participated in practice and are not on the injury report.

Houston Texans WR Nico Collins (knee) fully participated in practice Friday, Sept. 26, and is not on the injury report for Week 4.
Footballguys view: After being limited on Wednesday, Collins closed out the week with two full practices. The Texans' offense has sputtered out of the gate this year, and it won't get much easier this week against a punchy Titans defense. Still, Collins is among the league's best receivers. He's a must-start player in all formats. |

Houston Texans WR Nico Collins (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Sept. 24.
Footballguys view: Collins is limited, but he should be a full participant by Friday. The Texans need him in a big way as he's the best part of what they do on offense. Fantasy GMs need him too, and Collins should perform like his usual WR1 against the Titans in Week 4. |

Houston Texans S C.J. Gardner-Johnson was released by the team on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
Footballguys view: Gardner-Johnson, 27, was traded to Houston in March. He started each of the first three games, playing 96 percent of defensive snaps, recording 15 total tackles. According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston, Gardner-Johnson's release comes after there was friction between him and the team behind the scenes. Gardner-Johnson complained about his role, wanted to blitz more, and was critical of his teammates. He also told the Texans that he didn't want to be traded. The move comes a day after Jimmie Ward came off the commissioner's exempt list -- though Ward was placed on the PUP list. |
