Chiefs | Monday practice report for Chiefs Mon Dec 22, 06:29 PM
Kansas City Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie (knee), WR Rashee Rice (concussion), WR Tyquan Thornton (concussion) and CB Jaylen Watson (groin) did not participate in practice Monday, Dec. 22. OT Jaylon Moore (knee) and DT Derrick Nnadi (illness) were limited during practice. TE Jake Briningstool (hamstring), S Mike Edwards (shoulder), CB Kristian Fulton (knee, wrist), TE Noah Gray (shoulder), CB Nazeeh Johnson (shoulder), OT Esa Pole (knee), WR Nikko Remigio (knee) and OG Trey Smith (ankle) fully participated in practice. The Chiefs did not hold a practice Monday, so the report is an estimation.

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills practice squad QB Shane Buechele was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs 53-man roster Monday, Dec. 22. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: With Gardner Minshew going on IR, Chris Oladokun is poised to start at quarterback against the Broncos this week on Christmas night, with the newly-signed Buechele likely to serve as his backup.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Gardner Minshew (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, Dec. 27.
Footballguys view: We learned earlier today that Minshew avoided a torn ACL, but his knee injury was significant enough to cost him the rest of the 2025 season. Minshew played 14 snaps before he had to exit Sunday's loss to the Titans. In four appearances with one start this season, Minshew completed 6-of-13 passes for 37 yards with an interception. As Profootballtalk.com pointed out, Minshew is set to be a free agent in 2026. With his experience, the veteran signal caller is likely to have a market for his services as a backup next year.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Gardner Minshew's (knee) MRI did not show a torn anterior cruciate ligament, but he is still expected to miss time because of the knee injury he suffered in Week 16, according to sources.
Footballguys view: To that end, multiple reports note the Chiefs are signing quarterback Shane Buechele to the 53-man roster off the Bills' practice squad. Hosting the Broncos on Thursday night to cap the Christmas Day slate, the Chiefs are set to release their first injury report of the week later on Monday. Given Minshew's injury, Chris Oladokun is likely to start for Kansas City this week after playing the majority of Sunday's game.

Kansas City Chiefs LB Nick Bolton and CB Chamarri Conner each had a sack in Week 16 against the Tennessee Titans. Bolton had 10 total stops, four solo tackles, a tackle for loss and a QB hit, while Conner had six solo stops, a tackle for loss and a QB hit.

Kansas City Chiefs CB Kristian Fulton totaled 10 stops with a team-high seven solo tackles in Week 16 against the Tennessee Titans.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Brashard Smith did not have a rushing attempt in Week 16 against the Tennessee Titans, while adding a 4-yard reception on his only target.
Link to storyKansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce ended up with a single 6-yard reception on four targets in Week 16 against the Tennessee Titans.
Footballguys view: Kelce caught four passes on Gardner Minshew last gasp final drive of Week 15, but Minshew was ineffective early, and then left with a torn ACL. Even with #1 target Rashee Rice out, Kelce was a Week 16 dud. He won't be in any Week 17 lineups against the Broncos on Christmas.

Kansas City Chiefs WR JuJu Smith-Schuster posted a single 12-yard reception on four targets in Week 16 against the Tennessee Titans.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco ran eight times for 34 yards in Week 16 against the Tennessee Titans, while adding six receptions for 41 yards on seven targets.
Footballguys view: Pacheco was basically the #1 receiver in an extremely limited Chiefs passing game against the Titans. He'll be a desperation play on Christmas against the Broncos as the Chiefs favored him over Kareem Hunt in Week 16.
Kansas City Chiefs QB Chris Oladokun completed 11-of-16 passes for 111 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 16 against the Tennessee Titans, coming on for the injured QB Gardner Minshew II (knee).
Footballguys view: Oladokun had never thrown a pass in a regular season game coming into Week 16, but now he will likely start on Christmas night against the Broncos as the Chiefs play out the string. Gardner Minshew went down with a torn ACL, so Oladokun will have a chance to audition to come back as Patrick Mahomes backup when Mahomes may not be ready for Week 1 after suffering a torn ACL in Week 15.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Gardner Minshew (knee) suffered what is likely a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the Week 16 game against the Tennessee Titans, sources said Sunday, Dec. 21. He will have an MRI to confirm.
Footballguys view: Sunday's game was Minshew's first start of the season. It came after Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee during last week's loss to the Chargers, which eliminated the Chiefs from playoff contention. Chris Oladokun, the Chiefs' third-string quarterback, will take over as the starter for Thursday night's Week 17 game against the Broncos.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Gardner Minshew (knee) left the Week 16 game against the Tennessee Titans due to a knee injury, and he has been ruled out. QB Chris Oladokun is in under center. Minshew finished 3-of-8 for just 15 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions with an 8-yard run before departing.
Footballguys view: Chris Olakodun replaced Minshew and could be in line to start the final two games of the season. The Chiefs offense is cratering and might not have a suitable fantasy play for Week 17 on Christmas night against the Broncos.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Elijah Mitchell was waived Saturday, Dec. 20.
Footballguys view: With Dameon Pierce signed to the 53-man roster, Mitchell was seen as expendable. The Chiefs have Gardner Minshew in at quarterback with Patrick Mahomes done for the season. That could mean they'll run early and often. Perhaps that means Pierce could work his way into the mix with guys like Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt.

Kansas City Chiefs practice squad OT Chukwuebuka Godrick, QB Chris Oladokun and RB Dameon Pierce were signed to the 53-man roster Saturday, Dec. 20. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Pierce is the player to watch here. He's been a productive back earlier in his career with the Texans, and if Pierce gets a look, he might impress again. The Chiefs are likely to be evaluating players here with their season going nowhere.
Kansas City Chiefs LB Leo Chenal (shoulder) and OT Jawaan Taylor (elbow) were placed on the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Dec. 20.
Link to storyKansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce needs 203 yards over the final three games to become the oldest tight end in NFL history to reach 1,000 receiving yards in a season.
Footballguys view: Kelce insists he will play in each of the final three games. The Chiefs are not going to the playoffs, and Patrick Mahomes (knee) is done for the year. Kelce may be thinking about retirement, but we'll have to wait on his decision. Motivated to play and get this record, Kelce is a TE1 for Fantasy GMs working through the fantasy playoffs.

Kansas City Chiefs WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (rib) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 19, and is not on the injury report for Week 16.
Footballguys view: Smith-Schuster joins Marquise Brown as a desperation start this week. Rashee Rice is out, but an offense led by Gardner Minshew carries significant downside. Smith-Schuster has been effective playing in Rice's role in the past, but that role is not as valuable without Patrick Mahomes under center.
JuJu Smith-Schuster player page
Kansas City Chiefs WR Hollywood Brown (non-injury) fully participated in practice Friday, Dec. 19, and is not on the injury report for Week 16.
Footballguys view: With Rashee Rice out, Hollywood Brown moves up the rankings, but he remains little more than a desperation start. If Gardner Minshew looks competent, there may be some reason for optimism heading into Week 17. Fantasy managers considering starting Brown this week should take a wait-and-see approach.

Kansas City Chiefs LB Leo Chenal (shoulder), CB Trent McDuffie (knee), OT Jaylon Moore (knee), DL Derrick Nnandi (illness), WR Rashee Rice (concussion), OT Jawaan Taylor (elbow), and WR Tyquan Thornton (concussion) did not practice on Friday, Dec. 19, and have been ruled out for Week 16 against the Tennessee Titans. TE Jake Briningstool (hamstring) and CB Nazeeh Johnson (shoulder) practiced in full on Friday and have been ruled out. WR Marquise Brown (personal), S Bryan Cook (shoulder), S Mike Edwards (shoulder), CB Kristian Fulton (knee), TE Noah Gray (shoulder), DL Chris Jones (hamstring), WR Nikko Remigio (knee), and WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (rib) practiced in full on Friday and no longer appear on the injury report.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 16 against the Tennessee Titans.
Footballguys view: Rice was unable to practice all week after reporting concussion symptoms following Sunday's game. The Chiefs are eliminated from playoff contention, and Patrick Mahomes is out for the year. There is no reason to rush Rice back. Even if he returns in Week 17, his outlook will be severely limited with Gardner Minshew at quarterback.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice (concussion) missed practice on Thursday, Dec. 18.
Footballguys view: Both Rice and Tyquan Thornton are in the concussion protocol. It looks like new Chiefs starting QB Gardner Minshew will be without these wide receivers. That could lead to more targets than usual for Travis Kelce.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) has begun rehabbing from surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament in his left knee.
Footballguys view: The team is hopeful he could return early next season, possibly by Week 1. That's a bit optimistic right after the injury, but we'll get progress reports in the summer when training camp is drawing near. Gardner Minshew takes over as the starter now, and he's set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

Footballguys view: Mahomes is on the long road back from his LCL/ACL injury. There's a chance he's ready for Week 1 of 2026, but that may be a bit too optimistic. He's already started his recovery, but this is an injury that might stretch into the 2026 season despite the positive reports. Updates next summer before training camp will be what Chiefs fans and Fantasy GMs are focused on.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice (head) is going through the concussion protocol after experiencing symptoms Monday, Dec. 15, according to head coach Andy Reid.
Footballguys view: Rice now needs to work through the protocol if he's going to get out there against the Titans in Week 16. If Rice has to miss this game, QB Gardner Minshew will be without one of his best targets. That means Travis Kelce could be in for a sizable workload. Let's see what Rice's status looks like later in the week.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes underwent successful surgery to repair his torn left ACL on Monday in Dallas, the team announced. Mahomes, who was injured during the Chiefs' loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, also had a torn LCL repaired during the procedure, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. "Patrick Mahomes successfully underwent surgery in Dallas this evening with Dr. Dan Cooper to repair the tear in his left ACL," the Chiefs statement read. "Mahomes will begin his rehab process immediately."
Footballguys view: It's rare for a player to have such a major surgery the day after his injury is sustained. Still, as evidenced by Mahomes beginning his rehab immediately, the three-time Super Bowl winner and Super Bowl MVP is determined to be back on the field as soon as he can in the hopes of starting the 2026 season. While the LCL can complicate recovery, it doesn't necessarily extend his rehab longer than nine months or so. That would be the middle of September or right up against the start of the 2026 season.

After suffering a season-ending injury on Sunday, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is seeking out more information on his injured knee before finalizing a course of action to repair it. Kansas City head coach Andy Reid told reporters in his Monday news conference that Mahomes is going to get a second opinion in Dallas from Cowboys team physician Dan Cooper. "We'll just see, we'll give you updates as we go from there," Reid said.
Footballguys view: Reid shared that the MRI scan Sunday night revealed that the star quarterback didn't have any major damage to other ligaments, and he downplayed the second opinion. "No, but these guys normally do that," Reid said. "That's just part of it." Again, Mahomes will miss the team's offseason program, and his availability for the start of next season is now in question. But his long-term future? Tom Brady, who, like Mahomes, tore an ACL in his ninth NFL season, went on to win four Super Bowls (and play in six) after his injury.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee in the closing minutes of Sunday's 16-13 loss to the Chargers, a result that ended Kansas City's playoff hopes. Mahomes is expected to have surgery in the coming days. He will miss the team's offseason program, and his availability for the start of next season is now in question.
Footballguys view: Mahomes underwent an MRI after the game that confirmed the injury. "Don't know why this had to happen," Mahomes wrote on social media. "And not going to lie, [it] hurts. But all we can do now is [trust] in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you, Chiefs kingdom, for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I [will] be back stronger than ever." Mahomes, 30, has managed to stay free of long-term injuries during his NFL career. Gardner Minshew will take over as the Chiefs starting quarterback.

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) had an MRI which showed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee late in the Week 15 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Mahomes and the team are exploring surgical options. QB Gardner Minshew is expected to take over the starting quarterback to finish the season.
Footballguys view: Now the question is whether Mahomes will be ready for Week 1 next season. The Chiefs don't have any other quarterback under contract for 2026, so we might get a read on their expectations by the moves they make in the offseason. The Chiefs get the Titans next week, so we'll keep Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce in lineups and consider Minshew in 2QB/Superflex leagues.

Link to storyKansas City Chiefs WR Rashee Rice ended up with seven receptions and 51 yards on a game-high 11 targets in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Footballguys view: Rice took a huge hit from Tony Jefferson before the safety hurt Tyquan Thornton and got ejected from the game in an incident that almost started a brawl between the teams. Rice will still be a viable play next week, especially in PPR leagues, but his upside is down with Patrick Mahomes out due to a knee injury, even in a good matchup against Tennessee.

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce registered seven receptions for a game-high 70 yards on nine targets in Week 16 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Footballguys view: Kelce was a solid play in PPR leagues, but that might not matter when it's time to decide whether play him next week with Gardner Minshew throwing passes to him. The Chiefs are out of playoff contention, but do have a very good matchup for fantasy football against the Titans next week, so Kelce is still a consideration if he helped you get this far.
