Dolphins | Miami about to discuss trade for Michael Mayer? Mon Jun 30, 02:23 PM
Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer is a player that the Miami Dolphins have had their eye on for a while, according to Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald.
Footballguys view: As USA Today noted, Mayer has long been rumored to be a trade possibility for the Raiders. A recent former high second-round pick who is sitting behind arguably the best tight end in football in Brock Bowers, Mayer makes sense here. Other possibilities being discussed at Footballguys headquarters? Baltimore's Mark Andrews, Chicago's Cole Kmet, Cleveland's David Njoku, and Atlanta's Kyle Pitts are among the higher-profile candidates. Rams TE Tyler Higbee, Buffalo's Dawson Knox, and New Englan's Austin Hooper also fit the mold. We'll continue to monitor and report back as developments warrant. |

Miami Dolphins TE Julian Hill receives an opening to start after the team traded TE Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers Monday, June 30.
Footballguys view: Trading away Jonnu Smith, who skipped Miami's offseason practices in pursuit of a new contract, leaves the Dolphins without a primary pass-catching tight end. Remaining in their tight ends room are blocking tight ends Julian Hill and Pharaoh Brown, as well as former undrafted free agents Tanner Conner, Hayden Rucci, and Jalin Conyers. We'll see if the Dolphins don't go shopping at the position in coming days. |
Pittsburgh Steelers S Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick were acquired by the Miami Dolphins Monday, June 30, in exchange for TE Jonnu Smith, CB Jalen Ramsey and a 2027 seventh-round pick.
Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick, 28, was productive after being acquired by the Steelers in 2019, nabbing five interceptions in 14 games with his new team. He had multiple interceptions in each of the following three seasons, including a career-high six in 2022. However, he hit a slump in 2023 and failed to record a single pick as he battled injuries throughout that season. Still, Fitzpatrick has 20 interceptions in his career, and acquiring him is a significant step for a Dolphins team looking to replace its entire starting secondary from a season ago. |

Miami Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith posted 582 yards during the second half of the 2024 NFL season and caught seven of his eight touchdowns during those games.
Footballguys view: Smith's second-half surge helped him snare 88 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns (all career highs). The Dolphins plan on getting the ball out quickly again with QB Tua Tagovailoa, and Smith is clearly a favorite target. However, the situation between the Dolphins and Smith remains fluid according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus. Smith missed minicamp as he seeks a long-term extension from the team. Deals get done at deadlines, and the start of training camp seems like a time something could happen (new contract? trade?). Stay tuned. |

Jonnu Smith did not attend the Dolphins' mandatory minicamp last week, but that doesn't mean the tight end will definitely be playing elsewhere this fall. During an appearance on WSVN on Sunday, Smith's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said the situation is "still fluid."
Footballguys view: The Dolphins have talked with other teams about trading Smith, who is looking for a new deal after signing a two-year, $8.4 million contract With Miami before last season. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has stated that the Dolphins aren't looking to move Smith, but they haven't given him a new contract, so it remains a possibility. As PFT reminded readers, Smith was one of the few bright spots for Miami last season, with 88 catches for 884 yards and four touchdowns. It will be a bit longer before we know whether he'll have a chance at an encore. |

Miami Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith has been excused from the mandatory minicamp and has received permission to seek a trade, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Footballguys view: There have been rumors and reports indicating Smith was available to interested suitors. Talks with the Steelers didn't bear any fruit, but with Smith seeking a new contract in Miami after a career-best season in 2024, discussions are likely ongoing. We'll continue to watch for more. |

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa said he has focused on getting the ball out quicker this offseason. Tagovailoa said he tried to run people over last season in order to prove his toughness, but he understands his availability is key.
Footballguys view: Tagovailoa missed six starts last season. That brings his total to 15 games missed due to injury in his five-year NFL career, with 2023 remaining as the only season he started every game. The Dolphins' record in the 10 games that Tagovailoa has missed because of injury the past three seasons is 3-7, so he understands the importance of staying in the lineup. For our purposes, Tua being under center offers the best chance for the Dolphins we're invested in -- De'Von Achane, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Jonnu Smith -- to return value. So it matters to us, too. |

Miami Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill (wrist) was spotted catching passes during individual drills for the first time on Tuesday, June 10, since undergoing wrist surgery in the offseason.
Footballguys view: Hill is still expected to be ready for the start of training camp even though he underwent that recent procedure to have pins installed in an earlier surgery removed from the wrist. Hill is coming off a disappointing season, but Hill currently sits at WR14 on the Footballguys projections. That's slightly higher than his WR17 average draft position. He can be had in the third round with the 35th pick overall. |

Miami Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith is not at the team's minicamp Tuesday, June 10.
Footballguys view: Smith is seeking a new contract in Miami after setting a club tight end record with 884 receiving yards on 88 catches with eight touchdowns last year. Smith is set to earn $4.1 million in 2025. While the Dolphins had some discussions about trading Smith, no deal has come to pass. As NFL.com notes, head coach Mike McDaniel has acknowledged Smith is a vital cog in the Dolphins offense. Miami would be hard-pressed to fill that role if it were to trade the 29-year-old. Remember: Smith will be subject to more than $100,000 in fines for missing the three-day session. |

Miami Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey is not at the team's minicamp Tuesday, June 10.
Footballguys view: Ramsey's absence is excused, per head coach Mike McDaniel, and therefore, he will not be fined. The Dolphins are in the process of trying to trade the Pro Bowl corner, so it makes sense that they wouldn't require his presence during minicamp. |

Miami Dolphins RB Jaylen Wright told reporters on Monday, June 9, that he added six pounds to his frame and 'lost a lot of body fat' while gaining 'a lot of muscle' this offseason after dedicating himself to getting in and staying in shape.'Just working hard in the offseason, working on my body. I probably added about six pounds. I lost a lot of body fat. I gained a lot of muscle. That's why it might look like I'm a little bigger, but yeah, just offseason, working hard, focusing on my body, getting prepared for the season,' Wright said.
Link to storyMiami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said he has been excited about Jaylen Waddle's work to improve all aspects of his game during offseason workouts. 'I see a guy that's ready to earn growth to a game that's already top tier within the National Football League. It's exciting for me and exciting for when I go out on the field, because he's humbly approaching his craft, attacking it, so that he's not satisfied with any part of his game,' McDaniel said.

Back in it: the Steelers renewed conversations today with Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith, who is seeking a new contract. The trade between the Steelers and Dolphins is still alive, per source.
Footballguys view: This report by ESPN's Adam Schefter comes less than eight hours after Schefter reported that the two sides weren't expected to cut a deal. Again, where Smith plays matters. He finished behind only Brock Bowers, Trey McBride, and George Kittle leaguewide in receiving yards by a tight end in 2024 en route to a TE4 finish. Smith is going as TE7 in early best-ball drafts. |
JuJu Smith-Schuster player page
Miami Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith would prefer to remain with the Dolphins, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus. Smith is looking for a pay raise after a productive 2024 season.
Footballguys view: Smith generated 88 catches for 884 yards with eight touchdowns in his first season in Mike McDaniel's system, finishing first on the team in catches and touchdown grabs and second in receiving yards. As NFL.com suggests, the Dolphins surely don't want to lose a key playmaker in the offense, particularly at a position with no proven backup on board. We'll continue to watch for more. |

Miami Dolphins OT Terron Armstead was placed on the Reserve/Retired list on Monday, June 2.
Link to storyUpdating a previous report, Miami Dolphins LB Jaelan Phillips (knee) did not participate in team drills during practice Wednesday, May 28.
Footballguys view: Phillips is a talented, but oft-injured player so the team should exercise caution during offseason workouts. A knee injury in the first month of the season ended his 2024 campaign, and he suffered an Achilles' injury late in the 2023 season. The former first-round pick has not played a full season since 2022, and this year is the final year of his rookie contract. |

Miami Dolphins CB Cam Smith (leg) suffered an apparent leg injury during practice Wednesday, May 28.
Footballguys view: A second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Smith has played 21 games in two pro seasons (with zero starts). He's been banged up quite a bit so far in his young pro career, but he's an athletic (and sometimes grabby) corner who doesn't back down from a challenge. The physical talent has always been there with Smith, but he needs to get healthy and stay healthy to further prove himself as a pro player (and possible starter). |

Miami Dolphins fifth-round draft choice CB Jason Marshall Jr. 'has a chance to be a really good player,' according to fellow teammate and cornerback Kader Kohou.'Man, he's a baller. He's quiet. He comes every day ready to work. He's like a sponge, he's always taking notes and stuff like that. He's big, athletic - he has a chance to be a really good player,' Kohou said recently.
Link to storyMiami Dolphins TE Jonnu Smith reportedly expressed an interest in reworking his current contract, which is scheduled to pay him $4.8 million for the 2025 season, and the team has reportedly countered by opening up trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Footballguys view: Smith is in the final year of his contract and wants a new deal. Last year, and his first year with the Dolphins, Smith had career highs in targets (111), receptions (88), yards (884), and touchdowns (8). Schefter is reporting that Smith's preference is to stay in Miami with a re-worked contract. |

Miami Dolphins OG James Daniels (Achilles) has not practiced this offseason because he is still recovering from his torn Achilles, according to head coach Mike McDaniel.
Link to storyMiami Dolphins OT Austin Jackson (knee) has been able to participate in some activities during the offseason, according to head coach Mike McDaniel.

Free-agent CB Ryan Cooper Jr. (Dolphins) signed an undisclosed contract with the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday, May 27. CB Jason Maitre (undisclosed) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list to make room for him on the roster.
Link to storyUndrafted free-agent QB Brett Gabbert (Miami) signed with the Miami Dolphins Thursday, May 22. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The team also waived LB William Bradley-King.
Link to storyMiami Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill 'has been great,' according to wide receivers coach Robert Prince.'Tyreek's been great. If I text him, he texts me back. If I call him, he calls me back. He says I'm going to be here, he's been here. And it's been great. I've had nothing but positive experiences with Tyreek, and he's a great leader in the room,' Prince recently told the Miami Herald.
Footballguys view: Good news for the Dolphins here. Hill hinted about wanting to be traded away earlier this year, but things seem to have smoothed over. He underwent a second, pre-planned surgery to remove screws placed in his wrist during the first offseason surgery. Now, Hill seems to be doing great on his road to recovery. Hill should push for low-end WR1 numbers in 2025. |

Miami Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey continues to garner trade interest, but the team said nothing is imminent.
Footballguys view: While nothing may be imminent, Ramsey is likely gone in the near future. The Dolphins would incur a $25 million salary cap hit if they trade him before July 1, and it's roughly $7 million if he's dealt after that. Wolfe has reported a few teams to monitor, including the Rams, Panthers, and Falcons. |

Free-agent CB Rasul Douglas (Bills) is still receiving interest from the Miami Dolphins even though he rejected an offer from the team earlier in the offseason.

Free-agent CB Asante Samuel Jr. (Chargers) has received interest from the Miami Dolphins this offseason, according to a source. Samuel has not met with the Dolphins or has received an offer from the team at this point.
Link to storyMiami Dolphins RB Ollie Gordon II is 'probably still a long shot for real production' as a rookie, according to Mike Clay of ESPN.com.
Footballguys view: Gordon is a talented rookie the Dolphins were able to add out of Oklahoma State in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He's got power to his game, and he's an efficient runner who wastes little motion between the tackles. Gordon is competing for the no.3 spot on the depth chart (behind De'Von Achane and Jaylen Wright) with Alexander Mattison. We like stashing Gordon in deep dynasty, but his path to redraft value in 2025 seems cluttered. |
Miami Dolphins RB De'Von Achane said he believes he was not as productive as he could have been in 2024 and hopes to rush for at least 1,000 yards this upcoming season.
Footballguys view: Achane rushed for 907 yards last year, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. Those totals were significantly boosted by a pair of monster runs at the end of the season when he gained 50 yards on a second-half run in a win over the San Francisco 49ers and 61 yards on one run in Miami's season-closing loss to the New York Jets. Before those big gains, Achane averaged less than 3.3 yards per carry in eight regular-season games. Miami's offensive line struggled so much in 2024 that the coaching staff equated short passes to Achane as substitutions for running plays, and that's why he caught a career-high 78 passes and turned them into 592 yards and six receiving touchdowns, which brought his 2024 total to 12. This year, Miami upgraded their guard spots by signing James Daniels as a free agent and drafting Jonah Savaiinaea in the second round. For fantasy investors, there will be no discounts. Achane, who finished as RB6 last year, is going as RB7 with the 18th pick overall in early best balls. |
Miami Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill (wrist) is still expected to be ready for the start of training camp even though he underwent another procedure on his wrist to remove pins from the wrist, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus.
Footballguys view: Hill had surgery in February to repair an injury he played through during the 2024 season. He had a second procedure earlier this month to remove screws from the wrist, a procedure that was part of his initial treatment plan. Word at the time of the initial surgery was that Hill would be ready to go for training camp, and there's no sign that anything has changed on that front. Hill is coming off a disappointing season, but he heads into 2025 as the WR13 on the Footballguys initial projections. |

Link to storyMiami Dolphins fifth-round pick DT Jordan X. Phillips, fifth-round pick CB Jason Marshall Jr., fifth-round pick S Dante Trader Jr., sixth-round pick RB Ollie Gordon II and seventh-round pick DT Zeek Biggers signed their rookie four-year deals Friday, May 9. Phillips, Marshall and Trader, all selected in the fifth round, will each total about $4.6 million on the scale. Gordon, a sixth-round pick, is due to make more than $4.4 million. Ewers and Biggers, as seventh-rounders, are set to make around $4.3 million.
Footballguys view: Gordon is a player we appreciate because of his size/athleticism combination. He's a big-bodied back (226 pounds) with the movement skills of a smaller back. In the NFL, Gordon needs to show the ability to use his size as a weapon in a power game. The rookie is competing for a reserve spot this year behind De'Von Achane and Jaylen Wright. |
Miami Dolphins first-round pick DT Kenneth Grant signed his rookie four-year deal Friday, May 9. Finanicial terms weren't disclosed, but all first-round picks receive a fifth-year option.

Link to storyMiami Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill (wrist) underwent a second surgery on his wrist Wednesday, May 7, but it will not change his recovery time because the surgery was part of the original plan, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Footballguys view: Hill had surgery in February to repair an injury he played through during the 2024 season. He posted pictures, via David Furones of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, from a surgical bed to social media on Tuesday. Hill captioned one of the Snapchat photos, "surgery #2," and another showed him with his wrist bandaged with the caption, "mission successful." Marcel-Louis Jacques of ESPN.com confirmed that Hill had screws removed from his wrist in a procedure that was part of his initial treatment plan. Word at the time of the initial surgery was that Hill would be ready to go for training camp, and there's no sign that anything has changed on that front. |
