Minnesota Vikings RB Cam Akers is not expected to be active for the Week 3 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell.
Footballguys view: We'll see one more week of Alexander Mattison as the starter. Behind him, Ty Chandler could get some work. Next week will be a big test for Mattison's hold on the starting job. Once Akers is up to speed - which shouldn't take long since O'Connell's offense is a Shanahan system like Sean McVay runs with the Rams - he could be the lead back for the Vikings. |

Minnesota Vikings RB Alexander Mattison is still receiving confidence from the coaching staff despite the trade to acquire RB Cam Akers, according to OC Wes Phillips on Thursday, Sept. 21. 'We haven't lost confidence in Alex Mattison. I will say that,' Phillips said.
Footballguys view: That's a nice sentiment, but always look at what they do and not what they say. The team made a move for RB Cam Akers, likely to take over in the backfield. Mattison has been highly unimpressive this season, and Akers should be the lead back as soon as he gets up to speed in the offense - which shouldn't be difficult because Kevin O'Connell's system is a Shanahan offense just like Sean McVay runs with the Rams. |

Los Angeles Rams RB Cam Akers was acquired by the Minnesota Vikings Wednesday, Sept. 20, according to sources. The two teams will exchange late-round picks in 2026 as part of the trade.
Footballguys view: Alexander Mattison has been disappointing (to say the least) so far this season. In two games, Mattison has just 19 carries for 61 yards and hasn't been the replacement for Dalvin Cook that some thought he would be. Akers is going to get every chance to earn the starting role, and he should be energized with a fresh start. |

Link to storyMinnesota Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson caught six of his eight targets for 66 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-28 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2.
Footballguys view: Hockenson is set up to deliver on his lofty TE3 draft ranking in a pass heavy offense that is going to continue to feed him short targets. |
T.J. Hockenson player page
Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins completed 31 of his 44 pass attempts for 364 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-28 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2. He also lost a fumble.
Footballguys view: The Vikings running game remains stuck in neutral, so Cousins is shouldering most of the Minnesota offense, much to the delight of fantasy teams that waited on quarterback and ended up with him as their QB1. The Chargers pass defense that was lit up by Tua Tagovailoa is up next, although if the Vikings season goes south quickly, you have to wonder if Cousins would be trade bait to a team with Super Bowl aspirations that loses their starter. |

Minnesota Vikings WR K.J. Osborn had three catches, 34 yards, and a touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, Sept. 14. He was targeted six times.
Footballguys view: Osborn scored this week after being denied on multiple scoring opportunities last week. He's still technically the #2 for the Vikings, but he's the #3 receiver in the fantasy pecking order as long as Jordan Addison is putting up long scores with regularity. Osborn is a hold as bench depth in typical leagues with the Vikings passing game looking like one of the most productive units in the league. |
K.J. Osborn player page
Minnesota Vikings WR Jordan Addison had three receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown in a Week 2 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He was targeted five times.
Footballguys view: Addison is still behind K.J. Osborn in snaps, but his second long touchdown in two weeks made him a solid WR3/Flex start again. He should be in fantasy lineups against the Chargers next week. |
Minnesota Vikings RB Alexander Mattison carried the ball eight times for 28 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, Sept. 14. He added three receptions (on six targets) for 11 yards. Mattison also lost a fumble -- he would have lost a second one, but it was negated when the Eagles lined up in the neutral zone.
Footballguys view: Mattison has been one of the least efficient starting running backs in the league, so it's possible that his job is in danger, although it isn't like Ty Chandler is doing anything to bust down the door to the lead role. This backfield could use a veteran upgrade, but it's not clear that another running back would create a lot more production even though Mattison looks sluggish and not deserving of the job. |
