49ers | Report: TE George Kittle suffered mid-to-low ankle sprain Tue Dec 23, 05:47 PM
The 49ers have gotten some positive news on tight end George Kittle. Per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Kittle suffered a mid-to-low ankle sprain during Monday night's victory over the Colts.
Footballguys view: That means he should not be out long-term with the injury if he misses any time at all. Kittle told reporters postgame that he didn't believe he had suffered a high-ankle sprain in the second quarter. Kittle also felt like the play was a hip-drop tackle. Kittle finished the Week 16 win with seven catches for 115 yards with a touchdown. In 10 games this season, Kittle has caught 52 passes for 599 yards with seven TDs. We'll be watching for more in advance of Sunday night's game against the Bears.

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (ankle) limped off the field in the third quarter of the Week 16 game against the Indianapolis Colts due to an ankle injury. He was deemed questionable to return, but he did not.
Footballguys view: Before exiting, Kittle caught seven of eight targets for 115 yards and a touchdown. Since returning from an early-season injury, Kittle has been a key part of this Niners offense throughout the tumult that was the middle portion of the campaign. Now that San Francisco is closer to full strength than it has been at any other point in 2025, he's poised to have more outings like the one he had Monday night. That said, we'll need to monitor the ankle heading into a Week 17 tilt with the Bears.

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey had 21 carries for 117 yards versus the Indianapolis Colts in Week 16. He added six receptions for 29 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Footballguys view: The 49ers' run game has struggled to gain traction all season, and Monday didn't seem the most likely time for that to change against a Colts defense that entered tied for second in yards per carry allowed (3.8). But San Francisco's offensive line was up to the task with McCaffrey enjoying his second-best rushing effort of the season. McCaffrey surpassed 1,000 rushing yards for the season, the fifth time he has done it in his career. He'll go up against the Bears on Sunday night in Week 17.

San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy completed 25 of 34 passes for 295 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception versus the Indianapolis Colts in Week 16. Purdy also ran the ball twice for 11 yards in the win.
Footballguys view: As ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner suggested, "Monday Night Football" hadn't been kind to Purdy, as he had thrown five touchdowns and 11 interceptions in his five appearances entering this game. But Purdy shrugged those woes off against a depleted Colts secondary, posting his first career five-touchdown game. He's the first Niners quarterback to throw for five scores on MNF and the team's first signal-caller to throw for five or more touchdowns in a regular-season or playoff game since Steve Young in Super Bowl XXIX against the Chargers. The Niners play the Bears on Sunday night in Week 17.
San Francisco 49ers RB Brian Robinson Jr. carried the ball five times for 20 yards in a Week 16 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. He was targeted once as a receiver but did not have a catch.

Free-agent QB Adrian Martinez (Jets) was signed to the San Francisco 49ers' practice squad Wednesday, Dec. 17.
Link to storySan Francisco 49ers WR Ricky Pearsall (ankle, knee) is dealing with ankle and knee injuries, so his practice participation for this week is uncertain, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Footballguys view: Pearsall apparently aggravated his PCL injury. Against the Titans, Pearsall put up six catches for 96 yards. That's more than what he's tallied from Weeks 11 to 13 combined. It's also his best output since Week 3 (eight catches for 117 yards). The 49ers play on Monday night, so they have an extra day for Pearsall to get right. But Pearsall's status against the Colts should be an easy decision for the 49ers to make.

49ers receiver Ricky Pearsall dealt with a couple of injuries during Sunday's victory over the Titans, but he should be OK moving forward. "We'll know for sure tomorrow," head coach Kyle Shanahan said. "I would expect it to be alright, but he was battling through a lot today."
Footballguys view: Pearsall suffered an ankle injury during San Francisco's first offensive possession and was able to return. He then aggravated a previous PCL injury later in the contest that sidelined him for the rest of the matchup. Despite the injuries, Pearsall finished with six catches on seven targets for 96 yards. It was his most productive game since Sept. 21, when he caught eight passes for 117 yards in a victory over Arizona. The 49ers will have an extra day to prepare and for Pearsall to recover, as they'll play the Colts on the road next Monday night.

Link to story49ers QB Brock Purdy threw three touchdown passes, and the 49ers started the stretch run of their season with a 37-24 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
Footballguys view: Purdy threw two touchdown passes to Jauan Jennings, another on a 1-yard jump pass to George Kittle that coach Kyle Shanahan said he usually gives his quarterback a hard time for trying. "But when it works, we call him Michael Jordan," Shanahan said. Purdy finished 23 for 30 for 295 yards and converted four first downs with his legs, including a 26-yard scramble that was the longest run of the season for the Niners. San Francisco will play the Colts on Monday Night Football in Week 16.

According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the San Francisco 49ers have placed WR Brandon Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list.
Footballguys view: This move makes Aiyuk ineligible to return to action for the remainder of the 2025 season, and per Maiocco, all but assures an offseason split. This is obviously going to be a situation to watch over the offseason, one that Dynasty investors will want to monitor closely.

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey (back) was added to the Week 15 injury report Saturday, Dec. 13, because of a back injury and is listed as questionable.
Footballguys view: McCaffrey was limited in practice this week. On Thursday, he was listed with an illness, but on Friday, he was a full participant. Now, he's on the injury report with a back injury. Although ESPN's Adam Schefter reports McCaffrey "should be good to go," it's the Titans, so the 49ers should control this game. They might shut McCaffrey down if/when they jump out to a big lead... assuming he plays. The game is Sunday afternoon, so have another plan ready just in case. Brian Robinson might be in line to do more in Week 15.
