TEN - QB Kerry Collins announces retirement

Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Tennessee Titans QB Kerry Collins has announced his retirement from professional football.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Collins had one more good season in him - the 2008 campaign that saw the Titans enter the playoffs as the top seed in the AFC after Vince Young experienced a week 1 meltdown - but after that, the game passed him by. That he hung around through 2010 and got paid well to do it shows just how few adequate QBs there are in the NFL. We wish him the best in whatever is next for him.

TEN - Could have interested interest in Matt Hasselback

Source: ESPN.com - Paul Kuharsky

The Tennessee Titans may more interest in Seattle Seahawks impending free-agent QB Matt Hasselbeck now after the retirement of QB Kerry Collins.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Titans will not want to throw Jake Locker into the fire, but without a veteran like Hasselbeck, Kyle Orton, or Donovan McNabb, they may not have a choice.

GB - Two expected to compete to be featured back

Source: Packers.com

Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant and James Starks are expected to compete to be the featured back during training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Alex Green or free agent Brandon Jackson could get some looks on third down, and Green or John Kuhn will threaten to vulture TDs and short yardage carries. The value in the Packers backfield is very tough to gauge right now and could change from week to week. Grant should be the favorite to win the biggest piece of the work, but the Packers coaches showed a fickle approach to divvying up carries last year.

IND - WR Austin Collie trying to get past concussions

Source: USAToday.com - Nate Davis

Indianapolis Colts WR Austin Collie said during a radio interview that he is trying not to think about the concussions he suffered last season because he believes it would affect his play if he dwells on it too much. 'You don't want things like that popping up in your mind. I try to ignore any thought I do have of it. I don't want to watch it. People want to show me and ask how I felt during that time and whatnot. I just kind of brush it aside because it is one of those things that it is in the past and it's unfortunate. I was unlucky, but I'm just looking forward to this next season and getting on with it,' Collie said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's certainly possible that Collie makes it through 2011 with no additional concussions and then goes on to have a Wes Welker-esque career with the Colts, but concussions seem to become more likely with each additional incident. Collie was a top 10 fantasy wideout when he went down for the first time last year, so he's worth the risk in redraft PPR leagues in the fifth round or later. Even in dynasty leagues he might be worth the risk because the FF world has discounted his value too much after his season ended prematurely last year. The possibility of his career being basically over after the next severe concussion looms, but #1 fantasy wide receiver upside more than counterbalances it.

WAS - Expected to wait on moving QB Donovan McNabb

Source: NFL Network - Jason La Canfora

The Washington Redskins are expected to wait to see if a team loses a quarterback to an injury before making a move with QB Donovan McNabb. McNabb likely would be released if they are not able to trade him.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This backs up a report that McNabb would only merit at late-round pick at most in a trade. The Redskins might squeeze a better pick out of a desperate team, but the waiting could also set back McNabb's chances of being ready to pilot a team if he doesn't have enough time to learn his new team's offense.

JAX - Knee surgery will not hurt MJD's game

Source: The Florida Times-Union - Tania Ganguli

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew (knee) expressed confidence that his game will not be affected by his January knee surgery. 'I can still carry the load regardless of what surgery I had or whatnot,' Jones-Drew said. 'They're going to be kind of anxious to throw Rashad (Jennings) in, and they're already kind of scared of my knee ... I want to be able to be out the gates playing because it's a production-based business. They're already skeptical maybe it's his knee, maybe we're working him too hard, we should give him a break.' Offensive coordinator Dick Koetter indicated that, while the team will likely be careful with Jones-Drew in the preseason, the Jaguars have no plans to hold him back during the 2011 regular season. 'There's been no discussions in the offensive staff room of Maurice's knee,' Koetter said. '... I can assure you ... coach (Jack) Del Rio has never said to me when we get to the season we've gotta hold Maurice back.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It is good to hear the optimism from Koetter, but it sounds like MJD's story is closer to the truth. It's hard to want to spend a first round pick on MJD right now, but he could be a value in the second round if the negative news causes him to fall to the second round. He still produced like a stud while injured last year, so as long as MJD seems 100% for training camp, it's probably better to err on the side of taking him instead of passing on him if you have picks in the late first/early second.

DAL - Unlikely to get restructured deal with WR Roy Williams

Source: NFL Network - Jason La Canfora

The Dallas Cowboys likely will not be able to agree on a restructured contract with WR Roy Williams and is expected to release him once the lockout is over.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Williams actually flashed a little of old Roy that was a fantasy factor with the Lions earlier in his career, so if he lands in a good passing offense, we'll keep him on waiver wire watch. His likely departure will give more opportunity to youngsters like Kevin Ogletree and Dwayne Harris.

SF - Colin Kaepernick grateful for Alex Smith's help

Source: NFL.com - Steve Wyche

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick said he has been grateful for the help he has received from QB Alex Smith during player-organized workouts this offseason. 'It's been great. You won't find a nicer person than Alex. He's helped me with any questions or problems. He was quoted as saying that when he came in, [retired QB Trent Dilfer] helped him along. He said he wanted to treat a rookie the same way he was treated when he came in. To me, that shows a lot of class,' Kaepernick said.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Is Smith classy and nice? Yes. A good QB? No. That fact will probably help Kaepernick's chance to start early in his career more than any help Smith offers.

TB - Not interested in RB Tiki Barber

Source: The Tampa Tribune - Ira Kaufman

Updating a previous report, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers do not have any interest in free-agent RB Tiki Barber (Giants) because they do not believe he fit into their team at this point.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This could be a sign that they full plan on re-signing Cadillac Williams, which would be a wise course of action.

SF - Colin Kaepernick expects to fight for starting job

Source: NFL.com - Steve Wyche

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick said he expects to compete with QB Alex Smith for the starting quarterback job during training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Kaepernick will be hurt by the abbreviated offseason, but at some point the team will have to look for a shot in the arm on offense if Smith hasn't improved. Perhaps Smith could step up his game with a QB guru like Jim Harbaugh at the helm of the franchise, but we wouldn't bet on it.

JAX - Three WRs could compete for one spot

Source: Jaguars.com - John Oehser

Jacksonville Jaguars WRs Jarett Dillard, Tiquan Underwood and Nate Hughes could be competing for the No. 5 wide receiver roster spot during training camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dillard has the most natural ability of the trio by far, and we expect him to make the team as long as he stays healthy - which has been far from a given in his pro career.

NYG - RB likely would be top need if RB Ahmad Bradshaw leaves

Source: 1 No Source

The New York Giants likely would see running back their biggest need if impending free-agent RB Ahmad Bradshaw decides to sign with another team.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Brandon Jacobs role would grow some, and both Danny Ware and rookie Da'Rel Scott would get a chance to win a bigger role, but the Giants have had enough success with a two-back approach that they would likely seek out a Cedric Benson or Ronnie Brown caliber back at worst to replace Bradshaw.

NFL - Could QB Brett Favre return?

Source: NFL.com

Retired QB Brett Favre hasn't made any indication that he's pondering a return for a 21st NFL season. However, there remains speculation Favre might have one more comeback attempt in him. Favre's interest in mentoring Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton indicates he still has the bug to return. The Seattle Seahawks could be a potential destination should Favre decide to return.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

You knew this was coming, right? Favre can play at a higher level than some of the QBs slated to start right now, so if the game still seems fun to him, he should return. He should not, however, expect the football media to hang on his every word and action as they have in the past.

PHI - Have high praise for QB Michael Vick

Source: Philadelphia Daily News - Marcus Hayes

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg believes QB Michael Vick can be a better quarterback than former NFL QB Steve Young. 'Absolutely. Here was a man who hasn't played for a couple of years. However, if he did it the right way, I thought he could be a Steve Young-type player,' Mornhinweg said. 'Mike's got a long way to go, but, you know what? I think he can be better than Steve.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Vick's game was going in the opposite direction as the season went on last year, but he was still a much better passer than he ever was in Atlanta. If Mornhinweg is right about Vick's ability to improve, everyone who takes him in fantasy drafts this year will get a value even if they take Vick in the first round.

CIN - WR Terrell Owens pitching sitcom

Source: The Daily

Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent WR Terrell Owens is shopping around a TV show in which he would portray a character based on himself in a sitcom called '8 & 1.' Owens would star opposite actors inspired by his real-life baby mamas and kids. 'It's loosely based on my life and my career. I have four kids by three different moms,' Owens said. 'It will showcase my skills as an actor, which is something I want to do after football.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Both Owens and Chad Ochocinco basically act like they are the stars of their own reality show already, so this would be a natural fit for TO. Much like with Ochocinco, these developments make you wonder if Owens has any passion left for the game of football.

DEN - Expected to work out restructured deal with S Brian Dawkins

Source: NFL Network - Jason La Canfora

The Denver Broncos are expected to be able to agree on a restructured contract with FS Brian Dawkins once the lockout is over.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Dawkins level of play dropped last year, so the Broncos could be seeing him as a coach for Rahim Moore and Quinton Carter as much as they see him as a potential starter again this season.
