Browns | No frontrunner for QB job Wed May 27, 06:28 PM
Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson and QB Shedeur Sanders are the main candidates for the starting quarterback job, but offensive coordinator Travis Switzer said there is no favorite for the job at this point. Switzer said the team is happy with the progress of both quarterbacks.

Link to storyLos Angeles Chargers WR Ladd McConkey (undisclosed) is working on the side with a trainer during the voluntary workout Wednesday, May 27.
Footballguys view: While this is a situation to watch, it's nothing to panic about. It's also worth noting that Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh told reporters that Quentin Johnston, Tre Harris, and McConkey have all looked elite. We'll see how much work all three get, but consider McConkey the top option here.
Los Angeles Chargers OT Rashawn Slater (knee) and OT Joe Alt (ankle) appear to be on track to be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Link to storyRunning back Josh Jacobs has been released from jail Wednesday after his arrest on several domestic violence charges. No charges have been filed at this time, but the Brown County (Wisconsin) District Attorney's Office said the investigation "remains open and ongoing."
Footballguys view: Jacobs, 28, was booked Tuesday on charges of battery, criminal damage to property, domestic abuse, disorderly conduct/strangulation and suffocation, and intimidation of a victim. Jacobs, through his attorneys, denied the allegations on Tuesday. Head coach Matt LaFleur opened a Wednesday press conference by making his first public comments on Jacobs. "I'm gonna stick with the statement that we put out as an organization and just let the process play out," LaFleur said. It's safe to say this story is moving fast. Fantasy investors should follow LaFleur's lead and take a beat here to see how it plays out.

Free-agent LB Jackson Sirmon (Jets) signed with the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, May 27. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyLos Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert reported for the voluntary workout Wednesday, May 27, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Footballguys view: Harbaugh said Herbert was supporting his girlfriend, Madison Beer, on her tour. Herbert informed Harbaugh of his plans to miss some of Phase 2. The coach apparently took the news in stride. Harbaugh claims his initial response to Herbert was, "Do you need a ride to the airport?" Whatever the case, a refreshed Herbert is back and working with new OC Mike McDaniel, so all's well that ends well.

Jacksonville Jaguars RBs Bhayshul Tuten, Chris Rodriguez Jr. and LeQuint Allen are expected to receive playing time this upcoming season, but head coach Liam Coen said the team does not have a No. 1 running back at this point and there will be a competition during training camp for playing time.
Footballguys view: Tuten was being drafted in the fifth round as RB23 immediately after the NFL Draft. He's RB25 now. Rodriguez is RB45, available in Round 11. For fantasy investors, that's the entire problem in three sentences. The fifth-round price assumes Tuten gets the lion's share -- the carries, the goal-line work, the passing-down snaps -- of the workload. We're not there yet. We'll be following up on this situation often in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
Free-agent DE A.J. Epenesa (Bills) worked out for the Chicago Bears last week, according to The Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs.

New England Patriots WR Kayshon Boutte did not participate in the voluntary workout Wednesday, May 27.
Footballguys view: It's unclear why Boutte isn't there, but it's not new. The sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft hasn't been taking part in voluntary sessions to date. Boutte, entering the final year of his rookie deal at a base salary of $3.674 million, is eligible for a new contract. He might be withholding services in hopes of getting a new deal. It's also fair to wonder if talk of acquiring Eagles WR A.J. Brown is a factor. Boutte has never had more than 589 receiving yards in any of his three NFL seasons. We'll continue to monitor.

Undrafted free-agent WR Brandon Hayes (Southeastern Louisiana) signed with the Philadelphia Eagles Wednesday, May 27. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Link to storyMiami Dolphins WR Chris Bell (knee) will be able to do some running during offseason workouts but there is no timetable for his return to the lineup, according to head coach Jeff Hafley.
Footballguys view: As Footballguy Sigmund Bloom noted, Bell fell a little farther than some expected, but he landed in the perfect spot. The Dolphins are in rebuilding mode and won't rush him back from his 2025 ACL tear. When Bell is ready to play, his strengths as a runaway train on crossing patterns and a big ball winner on the outside fit with Malik Willis's strengths. Once he's ready, Bell will compete with Malik Washington, Jalen Tolbert, and Tutu Atwell, along with rookies Caleb Douglas and Kevin Coleman, for playing time. Bell is an eventual WR1 candidate for Miami.
Baltimore Ravens WR Rashod Bateman was not present for the voluntary workout Wednesday, May 27.
Footballguys view: Bateman has been an off-and-on participant in the voluntary program. It's not clear why he's out today, but with a revamped and new coaching staff, schemes, and plays, his absences are noteworthy. Bateman is coming off the worst season of his career, and the team added two big-bodied receivers in April's NFL Draft. Ja'Kobi Lane was selected out of USC in the third round, and Indiana's Elijah Sarratt was added later in the fourth. Again, these are voluntary sessions. We'll monitor this and report back as needed.

Link to storyNew Orleans Saints CB Jeremiah McClendon was waived Wednesday, May 27, according to a source.
Link to storyGreen Bay Packers DE Micah Parsons (knee) will likely start training camp on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list, according to head coach Matt LaFleur.
Footballguys view: ESPN's Adam Schefter recently suggested that Parson is a candidate to start the 2026 regular season on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list. If so, he'd miss at least the first six games, so his progress is worth watching when camp opens. The Packers don't have another proven edge rusher after they traded Rashan Gary to the Cowboys in the offseason. We'll be monitoring the reports on 2023 first round pick Lukas Van Ness and this year's fourth round pick Dani Dennis-Sutton to see if edge rush help is on the way while Parsons is on the mend.

Green Bay Packers OT Zach Tom (knee) is unlikely to be on the field until training camp, according to head coach Matt LaFleur.
Link to storyGreen Bay Packers TE Tucker Kraft (knee) hopefully will be available for the start of training camp or shortly after camp starts, according to head coach Matt LaFleur.
Footballguys view: "He looks so good, you'd want to put him out there," LaFleur said of Kraft. "But certainly we're still early in that process. Hopefully, he'll be ready to go either by training camp or early in training camp." Kraft was off to a strong start before his injury last season, with 32 catches for 489 yards and six touchdowns in eight games. If he's healthy, he's a big part of the Packers' offense and one of the best tight ends in football. LaFleur sounds confident that Kraft, who currently boasts a TE6 ADP, will be healthy in Week 1.

Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. (knee) is able to participate in individual drills and seven-on-seven drills but has not been cleared for team drills at this point, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski.
Footballguys view: "He's not 100 percent, but he's exactly where he needs to be," Stefanski said of the third-year quarterback. Once Penix is ready, the 2024 first-round draft pick is expected to compete with offseason signee Tua Tagovailoa for the starting job. As Field Level Media notes, both quarterbacks are entering a new offensive scheme led by Stefanski and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. The Falcons also have QBs Trevor Siemian and undrafted rookie Jack Strand on the roster.
Cleveland Browns DT Michael Hall Jr. (leg) was helped off the field Wednesday, May 27, after suffering an apparent leg injury during the voluntary workout.
Link to storyPackers head coach Matt LaFleur opened a Wednesday press conference by making his first public comments on running back Josh Jacobs' arrest. "I'm gonna stick with the statement that we put out as an organization and just let the process play out," LaFleur said, via Michael Gross of Fox 11 News.
Footballguys view: Jacobs was arrested in Wisconsin over the weekend and faces five criminal charges, including a felony charge of strangulation. The Packers released a statement saying they were aware of the matter and declining further comment. LaFleur was asked whether the team would be making plans to play without Jacobs for some portion of the season and said, "A lot's gonna happen between now and then" before answering another question about the overall makeup of the running back group. "I like the guys that we have, but, certainly, you can never have enough," LaFleur said. Stay tuned.

New York Jets WR Irvin Charles was acquired by the Seattle Seahawks Wednesday, May 27, in exhange for a conditional seventh-round pick.
Link to storyMiami Dolphins RB De'Von Achane (shoulder) is doing rehab work with trainers at organized team activities. Achane had cleanup surgery on his shoulder after the season and should be ready for training camp.
Footballguys view: Achane missed the final game of the 2025 season because of the injury, and head coach Jeff Hafley said the team will be cautious as they head toward training camp. "You'll see him out there doing some drills and doing some running around," Hafley said. "You will not see him in full team drills." As Profootballtalk.com's Josh Alper noted, the Dolphins signed Achane to a four-year, $64 million contract extension this month. It's unlikely they would have made that commitment if they weren't confident in his long-term health, so Achane should be moving full speed ahead soon enough.
Green Bay Packers RB Josh Jacobs has two years and $25 million left on his contract and would carry $6.25 million of dead cap space if released. It would be $3.125 million in 2026 and 2027 after June 1.

San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones agreed to a revised contract Wednesday, May 27, that added a $300,000 roster bonus. He's now set to make $3.55 million in 2026 with another $2.25 million available in incentives.
Footballguys view: Fantasy managers invested in this offense benefit from this move. Jones started eight games for the 49ers while Purdy was sidelined with a toe injury during the 2025 season. He kept the offense on schedule and kept the associated skill players on point. As Profootballtalk.com suggests, the Niners would prefer to turn to him less often this year, but the team's 5-3 record with Jones shows why they value having him on hand.

San Francisco 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey could have his touches managed a bit more in 2026 to keep him fresher, in the opinion of 49ersWebZone's David Bonilla on Tuesday, May 26.
Footballguys view: After an injury-plagued 2024 season, McCaffrey was NFL Comeback Player of the Year after a 2025 campaign that included 2,126 scrimmage yards and 17 touchdowns on a league-high 413 touches. Kyle Shanahan thinks it was too much. "Last year was the worst we had been at it," the coach said of managing McCaffrey's workload. In an effort to lessen that burden, the 49ers hope second-year man Jordan James and 2026 third-round pick Kaelon Black can provide a change-of-paces options to lighten CMC's load. Still, expecting McCaffrey to get anything but the lion's share of the work here is a stretch.

Green Bay Packers star running back Josh Jacobs was arrested Tuesday and booked on several domestic violence charge. According to Brown County jail records, the strangulation and suffocation charge is a felony, and the other four charges are misdemeanors. According to the records, Jacobs was being held without bond.
Footballguys view: As noted in a previous item, Jacobs, through his attorneys, denied the allegations. A first-team All-Pro in 2022 with the Raiders, Jacobs is entering his third season with the Packers after signing with the team in free agency in 2024. Last season, he scored 14 total touchdowns (13 rushing) and totaled 1,211 yards in 15 games. The Packers said they were aware of the matter involving Jacobs. The NFL has also been in contact with the Packers. Green Bay began OTAs on Tuesday, and coach Matt LaFleur has a scheduled availability with the media later today.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes participated in the team's OTA on Tuesday, May 26, according to a video posted by the Chiefs.
Footballguys view: It is unclear in what capacity Mahomes participated in OTAs, but just being on the field dropping back to pass is a positive sign. He was wearing a brace that covered his entire left leg. The Chiefs open their season on Sept. 14 against the Broncos on Monday Night Football, just a day before Mahomes will have reached the nine-month recovery timetable for his injury. The two-time MVP has made it abundantly clear he wants to play Week 1 when the Chiefs take on the defending AFC West champs. So far, Mahomes appears to be on track.

Indianapolis Colts QB Daniel Jones participated in OTAs in some capacity on Tuesday, May 2. He's closing in on six months post right Achilles surgery.
Footballguys view: Acording to ESPN.com's Stephen Holder, this reflects what the Colts predicted in recent weeks: That Jones would take some snaps in individual drills this offseason. He's not expected to participate in full team periods, but he's certainly on schedule. Holder added that there's no PUP list for training camp expected at this point. We'll continue to watch for more while reminding you that Jones' QB26 Average Draft Position suggests the market isn't as sold on a timely return as the Colts are. He's a value now, but continued positive news will drive the price up.

Arizona Cardinals QB Jacoby Brissett did not report to organized team activities on Tuesday, May 26, as he continues his holdout.
Footballguys view: This was expected. Brissett wants a contract that reflects his starting status with the team. He has not attended any of the team's prior voluntary OTAs or the voluntary offseason program as he awaits a new deal. Even with recent reports suggesting the two sides are far apart, Brissett should be in attendance for a mandatory minicamp in June -- with or without a new contract. We'll be watching for that. Meanwhile, rookie Carson Beck and veteran Gardner Minshew continue to get additional work in OTAs.

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Parker Washington could be in line for a contract extension similar to what Green Bay Packers WR Jayden Reed received and what Seattle Seahawks WR Rashid Shaheed received in free agency, in the opinion of Sports Illustrated's John Shipley on Tuesday, May 26.
Footballguys view: After flashes during his first two seasons, in which his second year saw his production take a solid step forward, Washington took his game to another level in 2025. After an injury to Travis Hunter ahead of Week 9 led the Jaguars to elevate Washington's role, he became arguably the Jaguars' most productive receiver. Washington set career-highs and led the team with 58 receptions for 847 yards and five touchdowns last season. Extension or not, Washington is currently being drafted as WR39, after teammate Brian Thomas, Jr. (WR36).

Seattle Seahawks WR Tory Horton (shin/groin) has reportedly received some good news medically that should allow him to accelerate his process for getting back, with 'a chance he can do some stuff toward the end of spring', according to head coach Mike Macdonald on Tuesday, May 26.
Footballguys view: A fifth-round pick in 2025, Horton made 13 catches for 161 yards and five touchdowns and also contributed a 95-yard punt return touchdown. But he had a shin injury in Week 9 that ended his season. Horton underwent surgery, and his timetable for a return has been uncertain. The fact that he could hit the field soon opens the door to Horton being available in Week 1.
Los Angeles Chargers S Derwin James and the Chargers have reportedly agreed on a contract extension for three years and $75.6 million on Tuesday, May 26.
Footballguys view: James was a first-round pick in 2018 and he has started every game he's played since joining the Chargers. He was named a second-team All-Pro for the third time after posting 94 tackles, three interceptions, two sacks, and a forced fumble last season. James is second among safeties on the Footballguys IDP Draft Rankings.

After a complaint on May 23 and a subsequent investigation, Packers RB Josh Jacobs was arrested this morning and booked into Brown County Jail on five charges: battery/domestic abuse, criminal damage to property/domestic abuse, disorderly conduct/domestic abuse, strangulation and suffocation, and intimidation of a victim.
Footballguys view: While it's far too early to assess the fallout, we wanted to get it on your radar. These are serious charges -- but at this point, they're just that, and Jacobs, through his attorney, "vehemently denies the allegations." The Packers offered the following comment: "We are aware of the matter involving Josh Jacobs. As it is an ongoing legal situation, we will withhold further comment." The NFL is also aware. We'll obviously be following up as developments warrant, but if you're in the middle of a draft, avoiding the situation until we get more information isn't a horrible idea.

Cleveland Browns CB DeCarlos Nicholson was waived by the Browns with a waived-injured designation, according to a source on Tuesday, May 26.
Link to storyHouston Texans WR Nico Collins and the Texans have agreed to an adjusted contract that guarantees his salary in 2027 and includes a $9 million cash increase in 2026 and an $8 million cash increase in 2027, a source told KPRC.com's Aaron Wilson.
Footballguys view: Collins is 10th among receivers in receiving yards (2,123), fourth in receiving yards per game (78.4), and tied for 14th in touchdowns (13) since 2024. He heads into 2026 being drafted as WR9 -- mirroring his Footballguys 2026 Draft projection -- with the 24th pick overall. Working in a run-heavy offense, with a still-unproven quarterback in C.J. Stroud, and for a team with the best defense in the NFL hasn't been an issue. And Stroud's willingness to push the ball downfield maximizes Collins profile, giving him a low-end WR1 floor and an explosive weekly ceiling on fewer targets.
