On August 26th, twelve members of the Footballguys staff got together for the site's 14th draft of 2015. Below is the league scoring format and bylaws. This draft mirrors the setup and format of the Footballguys Players Championship Draft Experts League

Overall Strategy:

Open the draft by taking the top TE and QB. Draft RB and WR for value beyond that.

Best Pick:

Andrew Luck 2.12. After opening the draft by taking the #1 TE in fantasy this season, Lee followed it up by taking the #1 QB late in the second round. Having only 4 pts per passing TD diminishes Luck’s value a bit more, but with the injuries to the Green Bay WR corps, Luck is still the consensus #1 QB going into the season. Starting the draft with Rob Gronkowski and Andrew Luck gave Lee a huge advantage at the start of the draft.

Worst Pick:

Jacob Tamme – 20.12. While Lee went out and scored Gronkowski with the #1 overall pick, he completely ignored the TE position until late in the draft. With 2 flex positions, 1.5 TE PPR and a best ball format, it would have been better to add a backup TE sooner. If Gronkowski goes down to injury, has a bye week or even has a week where the defense shuts him down, Lee has almost no support for the TE position.

Evaluation:  

Grabbing a TE and a QB with your first two picks puts you at a big disadvantage at the RB and WR positions. Especially when the rest of the league is fading QB and pounding the RB/WR picks right out of the gate. Lee made a reasonable attempt at a recovery but ended up with Lamar Miller and Carlos Hyde as his top two RBs and Golden Tate, Charles Johnson and Anquan Boldin as his top three WRs. Lee continued to add depth at RB and WR, and made some nice middle and late round selections to help boost his points per week due to the best ball format. With a starting core of Gronkowski and Luck, if his RBs and WRs perform reasonably well from week to week, Lee is going to be hard to beat.

1. You drafted six rookies, all but one were selected in the 10th round or later. Choose a few of these later round rookies and explain why you have high expectations for them this year. 
 
As a Footballguy whose background is predicated in the DFS space, I see best ball leagues in a similar fashion to guaranteed prize pools (GPP's) in daily fantasy--you're looking for upside with every player you roster.  The rookies I drafted in the later rounds all represent players that I recognized as having significant upside for the NFL level, despite not currently having a starting job.  Justin Hardy, David Cobb, and David Johnson are all players who just need something minor to go their way (i.e., injury, poor play above them, etc.) to jump into a starting role; in a 28-round, 14-team best ball league, I'm comfortable taking a flyer on that upside because strong value doesn't present itself often past the 10th round in that type of league.
 
2. Pick a player you are targeting in drafts this year and explain why drafting him is a good idea. 
 
Related to the first question, I find myself targeting David Johnson in the later rounds of drafts this season.  Andre Ellington has immense talent ahead of Johnson, but Ellington has historically been hampered by injury issues since his days at Clemson; furthermore, Ellington is not a bruising back capable of running 20+ carries in between tackles week after week. For those reasons, I think David Johnson could be used more than the bulk of the fantasy football community currently envisions.  Johnson is a big back at 6'1" and 220 pounds, who will likely get the goalline carries and short yardage situations; if he is successful in those situations, I could imagine a scenario where he becomes the primary back in the Cardinals' offense and Ellington takes on the passing downs role that better fits his physical makeup.  [If you're wondering, I think Chris Johnson's best days are behind him and pose no threat to the younger, bigger Johnson.]
 
3. Pick a player you are avoiding in drafts this year and explain why you are staying away.
 
I have yet to draft Emmanuel Sanders in any draft this season.  Why?  First (and most importantly), he is going way too early.  Secondly, secondary receivers in Gary Kubiak offenses have never performed well and Sanders is coming off a career season; he is too highly-valued for what the offense will allow him to do this season.  C.J. Anderson will be heavily used and Denver's defense should be a primary factor in many of the Broncos' wins this season, which means that the Peyton Manning will be called upon less to throw the ball...all of which means that Emmanuel Sanders will see a dramatic reduction in receptions, touchdowns, and yardage in 2016.  While others are drafting him, I've been picking up receivers like Mike Evans, Jordan Matthews, Keenan Allen, and Amari Cooper, all of whom are the primary receivers in their respective offenses.

Overall Strategy:

Draft Bell and ride out his suspension. Get a TE early and go with a solid QBBC to take full advantage of the best ball format.

Best Pick:

Tony Romo – 9.02. It’s really the back to back selection of Matt Ryan and Tony Romo that makes this such a solid selection. Holloway faded the QB position like everyone else, but landed two top 12 QBS with back to back picks at the end of 8 and beginning of 9. This is a great strategy in a normal fantasy league, but absolutely perfect QBBC in a best ball format. Holloway won’t have to worry about which QB to start from week to week and with Romo and Ryan on his team, he’ll probably finish the season in the top 5 with QB points. Well played.

Worst Pick:

Jeremy Maclin – 7.02. Aside from the obvious ‘will a KC receiver score a TD this season’ comment, the 7th round pick was Holloway’s last chance to fill in the gap that he had at RB. Taking Bell with his first pick left him short a RB for the first two weeks of the season and he only added C.J. Spiller before the 7th round. Instead of adding a 3rd RB to give him some depth, he picked up Maclin as his 4th WR and then executed his QBBC approach with his next two picks. By the time he was back on the clock at 10.11, 41 RBS has already been taken. That leaves him really weak at RB, especially the first two weeks of the season.

Evaluation:

Holloway executed a picture perfect QBBC for a best ball format. Most teams would be happy to start Romo or Ryan any week of the season. Holloway is guaranteed to have the best of both in this format. Drafting LeVeon Bell and Greg Olsen with his first two picks gave him a solid start at RB and TE and he pounded the WR spot with his next few picks. Maclin selection aside, Holloway has a solid stable of WR and he should field an extremely competitive lineup once Bell is back in the lineup. His biggest risk is at RB2 where most of his backups have serious question marks and if C.J. Spiller goes down to injury, Holloway is going to give up points ever week at the RB position.

1. How do you approach drafting quarterbacks in a best ball league?
 
I consider the quarterback position extremely valuable in best-ball leagues. WIth this league going 28 rounds, I suspected that there would be several back-ups drafted on hopes of possible playing time. I wanted to avoid having to take long shots, so I set my sights on the area just ahead of quarterback 10. I wanted Brees, but missed out on him by five picks. I was happy to get the Matt Ryan and Tony Romo combo and then added Derek Carr, who I like a lot with Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree in the 15th round. I was happy with those three and was not forced to take long-shots.
 
2. Would you rather have more depth at running back or wide receiver in a best ball league with no in-season management?
 
I much prefer to have strength at wide receiver in best-ball leagues. I drafted eleven, tops in this league. Even with several of my wide receivers being taken early, I love the potential of the lower round guys exploding for big weeks two to three times to lead my team. I almost always count on either wide receivers or tight ends being my flex plays. This was especially true in this draft, once I got LeVeon Bell to anchor my running backs.
 
3. Pick one of your young receivers drafted after round ten and explain why you are high on them this year. 
 
I have been targeting Markus Wheaton all summer, once Roethlisberger bagan talking him up. With the recent news on Matavius Bryant, he has moved up several draft boards and I think that he can be a consistent producer as my WR5 taken in the 11th round. I also think that folks are selling Kenny Stills short, he is much more than just a down the field target and I expect him to out-produce his draft position solidly.

Overall Strategy:

Fade the quarterback position. Focus on running back and wide receiver for the early rounds, and then go back to back for a tight end by committee approach.

Best Pick:

Vincent Jackson – 7.03. Jackson is a solid WR2 in most fantasy leagues, and in a PPR league, he has a chance to be a top 20 WR. On Hindery’s team, Jackson is going to be his WR3 option and in a best ball format, Hindery will always be able to benefit every time Jackson performs well.

Worst Pick:

Hindery had some solid picks early and landed some great value at QB and WR. But in the later part of the draft, he squandered a lot of his flyer pics by taking four defenses and four place kickers.  Buffalo and Justin Tucker were his first DEF and PK respectively and both of them will probably start most weeks.  He would have been better off spending flyer picks on RBs and WRs rather than stockpiling a position where 75% of the players selected will not start in a given week.

Evaluation:  

Hindery drafted a solid team, and in a best ball format he’s going to do really well. His top RB and WR are all solid picks and with 2 flex positions in a best ball format, he should have no trouble filling a competitive lineup every week. His TE position is a little weak for a 1.5 PPR league, but the best ball format should help with that as well. The key to Hindery’s success will be if his pile of PKs and DEF justify the picks he spent to acquire them.

1. You selected four kickers and four defenses. Explain why you like this strategy in best ball leagues of this size.
 
I liked this strategy for three reasons. First, the starting lineups aren’t particularly deep with 2 RBs, 2 WRs, 1 TE and 1 Flex. So you’re only starting 7 RB/WR/TE every week. I was still able to draft 17 RB/WR/TE and should have those positions covered. By the time you get 300 picks into the draft, there’s nobody left who’s particularly likely to find their way into your top 7 very often. So the marginal utility of adding an 8th RB late in the draft just isn’t there. Second, there is a real bonus to having 4 defenses and 4 kickers every week. The odds of hitting a big 20 point game are obviously much higher if you have 4 than 2. Over the course of the season, my 4th defense is likely to be highest scoring a few times and could add 15-20 points to my season total. Defense is a high variance position with some huge weeks and some weeks of negative scoring. Having as many as possible is a big advantage. Third, adding four starters at both positions also allowed me to block my opponents from adding a 3rd at either position. It’s tough getting stuck with only two. Their DEF bye weeks, they will have one DEF and if they put up a clunker, they’re stuck with it. If they are averaging ~10 PPG at defense all season and I’m averaging ~18, that’s a real advantage. 5 owners were stuck with only two defenses, which is a real disadvantage. And it’s only costing me late round picks that have very little value to build up what should be a big advantage over the course of the season.
 
2. You drafted the two leading Ravens running backs, Justin Forsett and Javorius Allen. Explain why you think it is a good idea to have a running back tandem in a best ball league?
 
Allen was mostly a best player available type of pick and not necessarily drafted as a handcuff to Forsett. However, the extra security of hopefully locking in the Ravens RB (assuming Allen can beat out Taliaferro) production for the whole season is a nice bonus. Forsett is a little older and has had some injuries in the past. 
 
3. Talk about DeVante Parker. Why should people target him in drafts this year?
 
All the buzz on Parker was extremely positive from OTAs before he went down with an injury and he is a highly talented guy in a very good offense. Parker is big, fast and has a knack for contested catches. He has a great chance to follow in the footsteps of the 2014 first round WRs and make a major year one impact. I like him as early as the 11th round and felt like he was a steal in the 14th round. And the Odell Beckham Jr. parallels are fun to think about as well... 3rd WR off the board overall and taken in the top half of the first round of the draft. Somewhat forgotten about due to an injury keeping him out of training camp. Set to return early in the season and should immediately have a starting role on an offense in need of a big-play outside WR. There won’t be another Beckham-like rookie season, but I’ll happily settle for a poor man’s version in the 14th round.

Overall Strategy:

RB/WR for the first eight rounds of the draft. Fade the TE and QB position.

Best Pick:

Joique Bell – 8.09. Bell is one of those ‘hot hand’ type of backs that can turn in a 10 touch,40 yard game one week and then a 20 touch, 110 yard, 2 TD game the following week. In a normal fantasy league, you can go crazy trying to catch the highs and lows. In a best ball league – he becomes one of your flex backs every time he goes off. 8.09 is good value for him too.

Worst Pick:

Josh Hill – 10.09. In a TE Bonus PPR league, it’s important to get at least one solid TE in the first few rounds of the draft. The top ones go fast and the longer you wait, the harder it is to field a solid starter. Josh Hill has a lot of questions and it’s hard to project him as anything more than a backup TE at this point in the season. By waiting too long to get his first TE, Parsons has to hope that Hill steps into a big chunk of the points that Jimmy Graham left when he moved to Seattle.

Evaluation:  

Good depth at RB and WR need to override the glaring weakness at TE. It’s just that simple for Parsons and his team. He has more than enough talent to handle the two flex spots with room to spare, but trotting out Josh Hill as his starting TE every week is going to hold his team back a bit. Philip Rivers and Marcus Mariota will be a reasonable 1-2 combination at QB, but in a best ball format, it wouldn’t have hurt Parsons to add a 3rd QB just in case.

1. You drafted four rookie running backs. Explain why you like these players and why others should target them. 
 
Todd Gurley is one of my go-to picks in the Round 4-5 range. For the cost of a low-RB2, a Gurley drafter gets top-shelf upside once he gets up to speed later in the season. I think of Gurley as I do a high-upside player with a 4-game suspension - ride out the slow start for the reward of impact on a per-game basis.
 
Matt Jones is one of my favorite 2015 prospects regardless of position. On tape he reminds me of a baby Marshawn Lynch. Jones has outstanding lateral agility for a big back and receiving acumen. As a pure talent, I like Jones better than Washington incumbent starter, Alfred Morris. When placing bets on non-starting running backs for fantasy, I side with talents I am confident to be above-average producers if the opportunity presents itself.
 
Cameron Artis-Payne won the situation lottery of rookie runners behind the taped-together Jonathan Stewart. Artis-Payne is a strong early down runner with plenty of production in his college background. There is limited competition for Artis-Payne on the depth chart and the only bigger locks in this world than a Jonathan Stewart injury are death and taxes.
 
Zach Zenner is a significant upside player. Joique Bell has been on the mend for weeks and Zenner projects as the strongest interior runner left on the Detroit depth chart. Zenner has one of the strongest production profiles of any undrafted running back of the past 15 years and, like Bell years ago, could be an emerging fantasy option for pennies on the dollar.
 
2. You selected a lot of youth in this draft. Explain why you like youth over experience in this best ball league.
 
Even more than traditional lineup-setting formats, I am an advocate of swing after swing at upside in best ball. A few big games justifies almost any selection and ho-hum volume alone does not win best ball leagues. Hitting on even a couple later round selections in best ball is the difference between middle of the pack and finishing in the money. On the age curve, I bet on younger players to emerge with those breakout-level seasons compared to their draft cost. 
 
3. Talk about Jeff Janis vs. Ty Montgomery and the WR3 battle in Green Bay. You selected Janis ahead of Montgomery. Explain why you like him over Montgomery this year. 
 
This decision blends well with the previous questions regarding best ball specific format. In a standard league, Montgomery is the prudent selection. He is currently ahead of Janis on the Green Bay depth chart and likely to see more snaps out of the gate. However, I see Jeff Janis as the higher upside play. If one of them hits big in 2015, my bet is on Jeff Janis, the only true field stretcher on the depth chart and closest thing to the now-absent Jordy Nelson. On the flip side, Janis is more likely to be a non-producer and start zero games for me over the season. In best ball, that does not matter with eight wide receivers to choose from weekly. I went hard at receiver with four selections in the opening six rounds, making the boom-bust profile of Jeff Janis the better Round 19 target.

Overall Strategy:

Hit WR early and often. Lock up NE QB situation and fade the RB position.

Best Pick:

Tom Brady – 10.08. Brady is the perfect best ball QB, especially when Jeff paired him with Jimmy Garoppolo with his 23rd round pick. Brady may or may not be suspended for the first four games of the season, but Jeff won’t have to worry either way. He landed a top 5 QB in PPG with a 10th round pick. Nice.

Worst Pick:

Arian Foster – 4.08. Takin Foster as his first RB is a huge risk for Tefertiller. He’s going to miss anywhere from four to eight weeks based on current projections and it could be even longer. By focusing on the WR so heavily early, Jeff’s top running back for the first part of the season could be Shane Vereen or Danny Woodhead.

Evaluation:

Jeff put a ton of faith in his ability to flex in solid WRs in a PPR league. But the problem is that he is going to give up five or six pointer per week for each of his starting running backs. Vereen and Woodhead are good RBS to have in a PPR, best ball league. However, they are not going to put up RB1 type of numbers this season and a bad week could really leave him vulnerable. He made some nice flyer type picks later in the draft, but with Foster out the first part of the season, he needs guys that can help early, not down the road.

1. You drafted Arian Foster fairly early (4.08). Explain why targeting Foster even this early, is a good idea.  

I wanted an upside RB in the 4th round after taking three very strong WRs in the first three rounds.  I debated between Foster and Gurley, and eventually went with Foster due to his proven excellence.  Foster is a Top5 fantasy option almost every week he is active.  While I like Gurley's future, it will be difficult for him to be as effective behind the Rams' weak OLine.  I knew I could get a couple of backs later to get me by, and was happy to draft Vereen and Woodhead.  
 
2. You drafted five wide receivers in the first eight rounds. Explain why you like this strategy. 

In the best ball leagues, I like to load up on WRs just to take advantage of the wide variance of outcomes.  In these types of leagues, you draft for upside without worry of poor outings.  I just hope to have enough depth to overcome these poor WR games.  The league takes my top four WR games each week.  I hope to have four strong outings to pull from.
 
3. What is the biggest difference in draft strategy between a best ball league and a league with in-season management?  

With in-season leagues, drafting for the "floor" each week is a concern.  In best ball, you want as many elite games each week from your players as you can squeeze out.  For this reason, I drafted three backup NFL QBs just to take advantage of any injuries which may happen since there is no waiver wire.  Also, at the end of the draft, you must consider which players (and positions) will have the best chance to put up big points.  This is one reason I made sure to have thr
