One unique feature of the NFL is how quickly teams can overhaul key parts of their roster, either in-season or in the offseason, and see those changes immediately affect both on-field results and fantasy value. Even teams viewed as long-term also-rans can make meaningful upgrades that shift their trajectory. The Cincinnati Bengals and Jacksonville Jaguars are two clear recent examples. Neither franchise has been known as a defensive powerhouse in recent years, yet both have made significant improvements that are already having a visible impact across the league.

A Golden Ticket

The Cincinnati Bengals have struggled to field a competitive defense under Zac Taylor, but the addition of Al Golden last season is beginning to show longer-term results. Golden deploys an aggressive Cover 1 on roughly 25% of snaps, far more than the league's typical reliance on Cover 3 and Quarters. This coverage serves as a safety net for a still-developing secondary and linebacker group, while the scheme leans on a strong front four to generate pressure and force mistakes. Although the Bengals currently blitz at the lowest rate in the NFL, they frequently use fire-zone concepts that create free rushers by dropping one of the traditional five-man front players into coverage. The most significant change has come in the secondary. Last season's approach treated players as near-positionless hybrids with overlapping responsibilities in a scheme that never fully clicked. This year, the Bengals have simplified those roles, and the results are clear: the unit has jumped from near the bottom of the league in efficiency metrics to the top half.

Who-Dey? (New Players)

The Bengals have rarely been aggressive in free agency, but this offseason they made a deliberate push to upgrade the defense with pieces that elevate the unit as a whole. The marquee addition was defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II, one of the best players at his position in the NFL and now the clear centerpiece of the front. Lawrence's primary job is to command constant attention from opposing offensive lines, creating cleaner one-on-one opportunities for everyone else. Alongside him are new signings Jonathan Allen and Boye Mafe, who handle the bulk of the pressure production. Mafe, in particular, ranks near the top of the league in both pass-rush and run-defense grades. Younger rotational pieces Cashius Howell and Myles Murphy provide fresh looks and help keep the front attacking throughout the game without wearing down the starters. In the secondary, the key addition was safety Bryan Cook. He has become a set-and-forget free safety, freeing Dax Hill to play more on the perimeter or in the nickel and allowing Jordan Battle to operate closer to the line of scrimmage without exposing the deep coverage. Pairing these players with rotational coverage shells and man-match principles has created a more cohesive secondary while also masking the natural growing pains of a still-young group. Ultimately, these additions have given Al Golden a personnel-driven defense that leans on a dominant front four, simplifies coverage responsibilities, and still retains the aggression needed to create negative plays.
