Scouting Report
Malik Benson is a new-age college athlete. Poor grades and playing in an option offense meant no offers out of high school, leading to Hutchinson Community College in 2021. After two standout seasons, Benson was the top JUCO prospect and one of the most sought-after portal entrants. He landed in Alabama, serving as a depth player on Nick Saban's last team. Benson looked to maximize his draft stock after one year in Tuscaloosa, moving to Florida State, though his impact remained limited. When a legal ruling gave him another season, he chose to play with Dante Moore and Oregon in the hope of one more draft boost. The result was his best season as he led the Ducks in receiving yards. Benson received an opportunity in the Shrine Bowl, where he drew positive reviews.
Benson can fly; he is a long strider who can take the top off and contribute as a returner. Despite a long college career, he is a raw receiver with a limited high school background who relied on athleticism in JUCO. His athletic upside is intriguing and will likely earn him a chance on Day 3, but he needs development.
Rundown
Benson is a high-level athlete who has bounced around teams. The lack of continuity likely contributes to his reliance on athleticism rather than to his development into a more rounded receiver.
