Hi Folks,

Welcome to Friday. It's starting to get wild already. No telling what it's going to be like here in a few days.

Lots of stuff to get to today.

But first, a sad personal / Footballguys note that I'll share with you. Keith Overton is our long time Tech Guru here at Footballguys. I'm not exaggerating when I say Footballguys functions today because of Keith. He's the Man. He's also the most humble, modest, kind, intelligent, capable and good hearted person I know. Today is a sad day for the Footballguys family as Keith is burying his father in Memphis today. Grace and Peace, my Brother. We love you.

Keith would also be the first guy to say let's do what we do. So let's get to it.

NFL - Goodell Decision: QB Michael Vick can sign, may sit 4 games

Source: Sal Paolantonio and Chris Mortensen, ESPN

Sal Paolantonio and Chris Mortensen, of ESPN, report that QB Michael Vick will be conditionally reinstated early next week, and he'll then be suspended four additional games.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

That means we should see Vick in a training camp very soon. Surely the identity of the team willing to sign him will be one of the most talked about stories of the month of August.

NFL: 'Despite what ESPN says, no decision made on Vick'

Source: Greg Aiello, NFL

NFL Spokesman Greg Aiello had a different take on the ESPN story regarding Commissioner Goodell and Michael Vick. Aeillo wrote on his twitter feed: "Despite what ESPN says, commish has made no decisions on MVick."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Interesting. We'll see how this plays out.

On a side note, this is one of the reasons why folks that want to know all we're doing should sign up to follow us on Facebook and Twitter. The ESPN story above and the Aiello story here are both important, but not big enough for me to send a separate email to the entire mailing list. DEN - WR Brandon Marshall could get suspended again if he is found guilty

Source: Mike Klis, The Denver Post

Mike Klis, of the Denver Post, reports that WR Brandon Marshall could get suspended twice for the same incident if a Georgia jury finds him guilty of a misdemeanor battery change in a trial starting on August 13. Klis added, "NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed Wednesday that as part of Marshall's discipline last year, he was told that if something more came of the charges against him, he could be subject to additional league discipline."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Marshall is not out of the woods yet, so stay tuned if you drafted him or own him in dynasty leagues. For now, we would still downgrade him to mid to late third-round pick because of issues including his hip surgery that caused him to miss minicamp, clashing with the new regime, and this possibility of another suspension.

CHI - Eighty catch season from TE Greg Olsen in mind

Source: Brad Biggs, The Chicago Sun-Times

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports that the Bears have something more like Greg Olsen's production in the last four games of 2008 - 20 catches with three touchdowns - in mind for 2009.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Olsen has been a lot of people's favorite TE to wait on and draft after the top six are off the board, mostly due to the Bears addition of Jay Cutler at QB. Eighty catches would almost certainly put Olsen in the top five TEs, especially in PPR leagues. Unless you break the seal and take Jason Witten, it doesn't seem like there's much incentive to be one of the first teams to take a TE in your league.

NFL - QB Michael Vick's agent denies report that Vick spent first free night in strip club

Source: Adam Schefter, ESPN

Adam Schefter, of ESPN, reports on his Twitter feed that Michael Vick's agent Joel Segal denied the report that Michael Vick spent his free night in a strip club. Schefter writes, "Vick's agent Joel Segal to me on strip club accusations against his client: 'Absolutely patently false.' And Segal didn't even hesitate. He was adamant that Vick was not at strip club."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

You can criticize Vick for many things, but it sounds like being at a strip club on his night of freedom is not one of them.

PHI - RB Brian Westbrook ahead of schedule

Source: Bob Brookover, The Philadelphia Inquirer

Bob Brookover, of The Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles RB Brian Westbrook (ankle) is ahead of schedule in his rehab, and the team expects him to be ready for their season opener Sept. 13. 'We're very optimistic about Westbrook,' team president Joe Banner said. 'He's doing great. He's ahead of schedule, but we're still going to be very conservative with him.'

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Sounds like we still won't get to see him in training camp or the preseason. We barely got to see Clinton Portis in 2007 camp because of knee tendonitis, and he had a fine year. We are a little less optimistic about Westbrook because he has a long history of missing time with injuries, but he's still a value if he falls to the mid-2nd round.

PHI - Three to split time at running back in camp

Source: Bob Brookover, The Philadelphia Inquirer

Bob Brookover, of The Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles RBs Lorenzo Booker, LeSean McCoy and Kyle Eckel will receive the majority of work at running back during training camp with RB Brian Westbrook (ankle) recovering from ankle surgery. FB Leonard Weaver is also viewed as a contributor at running back.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Weaver is going to be occupied learning the intricacies of the fullback position in Philly's offense, but he will most definitely be a contributor to the offense. In fact, Weaver is the best short yardage back the Eagles have on the roster, so if they want to save Westbrook some of that punishment, expect them to turn to Weaver.

The team seems intent on going with the players they have on the roster as they've said they are not interested in signing another running back.

CIN - WR Chad Ochocinco determined and in great shape

Source: Joe Reedy, The Cincinnati Enquirer

Joe Reedy, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports that Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco "did come into OTAs and minicamp in great shape. He looks determined to return to prior form which means over 90 catches, 1,000 yards and 7-9 touchdowns."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Our staff is all over the place on Ochocinco. The average ranking is 16th, which means you'll probably have to take him as one of the first WR2s off the board to get him. If Cincinnati's offensive line can give Carson Palmer time to throw deep, Ochocinco could hit the numbers Reedy projects for him.

MIN - QB Josh Booty ahead of Sage Rosenfels?

Source: Ross Tucker, Sports Illustrated

Ross Tucker, of Sports Illustrated, reports on his Twitter feed that his co-host Jim Miller "just said that his sources with the Vikings tell him that J.D. Booty is beating out Sage Rosenfels coming out of OTAs."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If the latest chapter in the Favre saga hasn't scared you away from drafting Rosenfels, this should do the trick.

ARZ - Team is several weeks away from talking extension with WR Anquan Boldin

Source: Kent Somers, The Arizona Republic

Kent Somers, of The Arizona Republic, reports Arizona Cardinals general manager Rod Graves said it will be at least a few weeks before the team talks with WR Anquan Boldin about a contract extension.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cardinals still seem reluctant to lock up a lot of money in a new deal for Boldin. He is still signed through 2010, and Arizona could still trade him next offseason, or possibly they're just convinced his football will be used up by then. Hold on to Steve Breaston in dynasty leagues just in case.

BUF - QB Trent Edwards will have full control of audibles

Source: Chris Brown, BuffaloBills.com

Chris Brown, of BuffaloBills.com, reports that QB Trent Edwards will "have full control of changing plays at the line of scrimmage and at times will have to execute those pre-snap decisions in hurry up mode when the offense goes no huddle." Brown also writes that Edwards has the complete trust of the coaching staff and he is carrying himself more confidently because of it.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Edwards will still have to contend with playing behind a line with five new starters, although no huddle will do a lot to mask their deficiencies. Edwards has also been mainly a game manager thus far in his career, and he will have to change his approach to be more aggressive with his new responsibilities.

NFL - Draft to move to primetime

Source: NFL.com

NFL.com reports that the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft will start on Thursday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. ET, with the second and third rounds on Friday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. ET, followed by Rounds 4-7 on Saturday, April 24 at 10 a.m. ET.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Well, the NFL has gotten its wish of moving the draft to prime time, but we liked it better when it was a weekend event. This will put the kibosh on all-day team parties and reward teams that lack clarity, because they will now have two nights to regroup and rebuild their boards instead of one.

STL - WR Ronald Curry has lost a step

Source: Jim Thomas, of the St Louis Post-Dispatch

Jim Thomas, of the St Louis Post-Dispatch, reports that one veteran NFL personnel man, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said new Ram WR Ronald Curry "has lost a step, but is still more than simply a possession receiver."

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Back in 2004, it looked like Curry was going to be a future stud before he tore his achilles. We're afraid that he is closer to a possession receiver than a threat to do anything more. He could sap any fantasy value Laurent Robinson and Keenan Burton might have this year, but we doubt he'll have much of his own.

BAL - WR Drew Bennett considered favorite if tryout player signed

Source: Jamison Hensley, The Baltimore Sun

Jamison Hensley, of The Baltimore Sun, reports unrestricted free-agent WR Drew Bennett (Rams) appears to be the early favorite to be signed among the wide receivers that will try out for the Baltimore Ravens if the Ravens decide to sign one of the tryout players, according to a team source.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bennett was so poor last year for the Rams that it's hard to imagine him having an impact on the Ravens, but Joe Flacco can really wing the big deep ball, and catching deep jumpballs was the way Drew Bennett (along with Billy Volek) became a big-time fantasy hero in 2004.

JAC - RB Maurice Jones-Drew busy preparing for training camp

Source: Maurice Jones-Drew

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew, through his Twitter page, said he has been running a bunch of hills and stretching. He noted his weight is at 210 pounds now.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

If MJD doesn't live up to expectations this year, it sure won't be because he didn't work hard enough. That has never been a problem for him.

NFL - QB Brett Favre conflicted about return

Source: Ed Werder, ESPN.com

Ed Werder, of ESPN.com, reports free-agent QB Brett Favre (Jets) remains conflicted about whether to sign with the Minnesota Vikings or retire, according to sources. The decision has become harder for Favre because Vikings RB Adrian Peterson, DE Jared Allen and OG Steve Hutchinson have been some of the players trying to talk Favre into signing. A source said Favre is starting to feel a sense of obligation to the Vikings. Favre is still unresolved about whether he will be able to hold up for 16 regular season games while maintaining the standard of performance he expects from himself. The two sides have negotiated a one-year deal worth around $10 million if Favre decides to play for the Vikings.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

In other news, water is wet.

ARZ - QB Matt Leinart likely to hold onto backup job

Source: Kent Somers, The Arizona Republic

Kent Somers, of The Arizona Republic, reports Arizona Cardinals QB Matt Leinart likely will hold off QB Brian St. Pierre for the backup job during training camp unless he significantly struggles during camp.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Hmm... "unless he significantly struggles during camp", that sounds familiar. Oh yeah, Leinart was supposed to be the starter last year, unless he significantly struggled during camp. Obviously there is a massive difference between Brian St. Pierre and Kurt Warner, but we wouldn't write Leinart's name in the backup slot in ink just yet. After all, the Cards did pay St. Pierre one million dollars to stay with the team.

OAK - WR Darrius Heyward-Bey to be worked in slowly

Source: David White, The San Francisco Chronicle

David White, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports the Oakland Raiders likely will bring WR Darrius Heyward-Bey along slowly as he adjusts to the NFL.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This seems like a good approach since DHB missed most of minicamp with a hamstring injury, and struggled when he wasn't hurt. Most people are making fun of Al Davis for this pick, and DHB coming along slowly will only fuel the fire.

DEF - PHI - Coach McDermott will work as coordinator during camp

Source: Bob Brookover, The Philadelphia Inquirer

Bob Brookover, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles secondary coach Sean McDermott will continue to work as the defensive coordinator during training camp while current defensive coordinator Jim Johnson battles melanoma, according to sources.

[ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ OUR VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

According to the Eagles media guide, McDermott was the LB coach before he became the secondary coach. He also worked closely with Johnson on the defensive game plan, and he is the longest tenured defensive assistant on the payroll. The last Eagles assistant to take over a defense, Steve Spagnuolo, seems to have done just fine. Sounds like the Eagles defense is in good hands.
