Fantasy football loves its overreaction theater. Panic over weekly performances and instant reactions are the usual course. We should take a moment to celebrate players who have provided positive surprises. We wanted to know who caught Dynasty staffers Maurile Tremblay, Andy Hicks, Ryan Weisse, Sean Settle, and Jason Wood's eye to start the season.
Question Of The Week
Who has been your most pleasant surprise in the first two weeks?
Bryce Young, Carolina
Tremblay - My pick is Young. He opened against Chicago with 361 passing yards, three touchdowns, and a rushing score in a 59-37 loss that turned into a shootout. That was easy to write off as garbage-time volume. Then in Week 2 against Atlanta, he threw for 287 yards and three more touchdowns without a turnover. Through two games, he has 648 passing yards, six passing touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown. For context, he cleared 285 passing yards only four times in his first 47 career games. He's always struggled to put two good games together, and he's done it now. More important than the numbers, he finally looks comfortable in Dave Canales' offense. He's throwing downfield and making decisions with conviction instead of the checkdown-heavy play we got used to, where the average throw traveled about as far as a handshake.
Young is still only in his mid-twenties, and a lot of managers wrote him off as a bust and pushed him down to QB3 or waiver-level value. If he's turned the corner, he goes from a sunk cost to a long-term starter at a position that's always scarce in superflex leagues. I'm not calling him a finished product off two weeks, but the change in how he plays passes the eye test. His contract talks with Carolina are coming up, so the franchise's commitment should become clearer soon because nothing clarifies a relationship like a dollar figure.
Weisse - As someone who has been defending Young for far too long, it was great to see how he played these first two weeks. He is second in the league in passing yards, tied for first in passing touchdowns, and has already added a rushing touchdown. Those numbers are good enough to make him the current QB2 in fantasy. For the first time, it looks like he and Canales have finally clicked. I can only hope it lasts; we've seen Young's hot-and-cold streaks in the past, but after two weeks, it feels good to be a Young fan.
