Updates from Week 1

Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks

The team's newest quarterback, Malik Willis, is drawing early praise in camp, specifically from OC Bobby Slowik. "I've been really, really pleased with Malik, just his work ethic every day, what he's doing, just not with me, with the players, his relationships he's building with all of them from the guys up front to the guys on defense to, obviously, the skills," Slowik said. Willis had his best practice of the week on Friday, and his teammates are beginning to take notice. Dolphins beat writer Travis Wingfield asked some of the defenders their thoughts on his standout performance. "He creates conflict because he has a strong arm and can run," inside linebacker Tyrel Dodson said. "So, you have to be disciplined, but also when he runs around you have to find your man and plaster it. But you also have to know that that extra person in the coverage where that can go contain him." For all the good news coming from camp on Willis, the drum beats much softer regarding Quinn Ewers. Ewers is the presumed QB2 entering the season, and while he has had good moments, he has thrown at least one interception in most practices so far.

De'Von Achane has been one of the focal points of the Dolphins offense since he entered the league, but this season he has his sights on an ambitious goal. "I feel like, if I got the rushing title, then, obviously, you know, every game we're doing something good," he told NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe after Sunday's first open practice. While many believe Achane's dominance over the snaps leaves little room for anyone else, HC Jeff Hafley has spoken very highly of second-year back Ollie Gordon II in camp. "Ollie has flashed and knows what he's doing. He has great speed, he has great size, and he can catch the ball out of the backfield too," Hafley said. Gordon is currently in a competition for the RB2 role with Jaylen Wright.
