Scouting Report

Tyren Montgomery is the most interesting story of the 2026 Draft. A standout high school basketball player in Texas, Montgomery walked on and earned a spot on LSU's basketball team. Due to his mother's illness, he returned home to support his family. His brother Kam, now a quarterback at Eastern Kentucky, convinced him to try football, a sport he had never played. To obtain tape for colleges, he tried flag football, which led to a national tournament and an invitation to the Olympics. Nicholls State was impressed and offered a scholarship. His time with LSU quickly exhausted his D1 football eligibility, but D3 John Carroll was able to extend his career. He exploded, setting single-season school records in every receiving category and earning an American Bowl opportunity. Montgomery stood out in practices, leading to an opportunity at the Senior Bowl.

Montgomery's athleticism easily outmatched the competition in D3. His basketball background translates to elite ability in the air. Coaches praised his quick grasp of route concepts. Montgomery is one of the most unconventional prospects in this class and embodies the unpredictability that makes the NFL Draft so compelling. He is likely to go undrafted due to the unprecedented nature of his climb, but he will get a shot in an NFL camp.

Rundown

Montgomery was a basketball star who walked on to LSU's team. Life circumstances forced a pivot, leading to a late start in football. He showed elite ability against lower-level competition and is the biggest mystery of the draft.
