Angelichio backs Metcalf despite drops; Bernard shines in Pittman's absence
Steelers.com reports that offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio expressed continued confidence in WR DK Metcalf, who has caught 8 of 19 targets through two games while struggling with drops. "We believe in DK," Angelichio said. "We're just going to keep practicing and keep believing in DK. We know he'll be the player we want him to be." Rookie WR Germie Bernard saw extensive action for the first time due to WR Michael Pittman Jr.'s unavailability (foot), catching four passes for 35 yards on eight targets after playing just three offensive snaps in Week 1; Angelichio said Bernard "showed some strides" and "took some steps forward."
Rodgers, McCarthy admit execution issues after Steelers score just 3 points
Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports reports that Pittsburgh Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers and head coach Mike McCarthy addressed the team's offensive struggles following a 20-3 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday, September 20. Rodgers completed 23 of 39 passes for 187 yards and one interception while fumbling twice, and said, "I thought we didn't execute very well at all... If there's too much stuff in the plan we've got to cut it back." Carlton Davis III ruled out with neck injury; Wishnowsky elevated to punt again
Patriots.com reports that New England downgraded starting CB Carlton Davis III to out for Sunday's Week 2 home opener vs. the Steelers due to a neck injury, and elevated P Mitch Wishnowsky from the practice squad for the second straight week with top punter Bryce Baringer still on injured reserve. Davis was initially listed as questionable after sitting out all three practices last week; he had briefly exited the Week 1 loss in the first quarter after making a tackle before returning. The Patriots are expected to replace Davis with third-year CB Charles Woods, with rookies Karon Prunty and Channing Canada also in the mix, while New England did not elevate veteran CB Kindle Vildor from the practice squad.
