Giants promote Jake Haener to 53-man roster, McCarthy likely to take over as QB2 'soon'
The Giants are signing QB Jake Haener to their 53-man roster off their practice squad, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported on Wednesday. Haener joins QB J.J. McCarthy on the active roster behind starter Jameis Winston. The move will enable the Giants to activate all three quarterbacks again, although it is more likely that McCarthy takes over as QB2 soon and Haener becomes the emergency third quarterback.

Giants QB J.J. McCarthy is active for Sunday's game against the Cardinals, though it is uncertain whether he will be the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback. The Giants elevated QB Jake Haener and DE Trace Ford from the practice squad, so they will carry three quarterbacks. Earlier in the week, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said getting McCarthy ready "is not going to happen in one or two days" and that the team would judge "where does that take him as a number two or number three." RB Devin Singletary is inactive, with RB Tyrone Tracy Jr. serving as the third back.
Haener signed to back up Winston, Harbaugh says 'all options are open' at QB
The Giants signed QB Jake Haener to the active roster to back up QB Jameis Winston, who makes his first start of the season against the Titans on Sunday with QB Jaxson Dart sidelined for the rest of the regular season. "All options are open," head coach John Harbaugh said of adding another quarterback, with free agent Jimmy Garoppolo, the Cardinals' Gardner Minshew II, the Vikings' J.J. McCarthy, the 49ers' Mac Jones and the Chiefs' Justin Fields among the Giants' targets, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. Whoever the Giants add will sit behind Winston to start, as Harbaugh and OC Matt Nagy are "building the offense around" the veteran. Winston went 11-for-27 for 111 yards with an interception after replacing Dart in Monday's 28-6 loss to the Rams.
Dart officially on IR, Winston only QB on active roster, Haener promotion possible
Giants QB Jaxson Dart was placed on injured reserve on Thursday, September 24, according to the NFL's daily transaction report. Dart will have surgery to repair damage to his MCL and meniscus after hurting his knee in Monday night's loss to the Rams. New York did not immediately fill the roster spot, which could be used to promote QB Jake Haener from the practice squad, and QB Jameis Winston is currently the only quarterback on the active roster. Head coach John Harbaugh said the team will also be in the market for another quarterback, though a new addition would be unlikely to be ready to play against the Titans on Sunday.
