With Penix struggling to get fit to start the season, it looks like Tagovailoa will start. Until the Falcons start losing and Penix is ready. I also still worry about concussion issues with him as well.

Tagovailoa will begin the season as Atlanta's starter while Michael Penix continues rehabbing a second torn ACL in his knee. Penix is throwing in OTAs, but he's not ready to start. The good thing for Atlanta's receiving corps is that both quarterbacks are lefties, which creates continuity for them as pass-catchers.
Tagovailoa lacks Penix's range and velocity as a thrower, but he has has strong accuracy with the throws in his wheelhouse. Kevin Stefanski and Tommy Rees will run an offense that uses multiple tight ends to enhance the ground game. This should set up the play-action passing game.
Tagovailoa will have big weeks against weaker defenses. The biggest immediate question is whether Rees' scheme will be better for him than Mike McDaniel's.

Tua Tagovailoa will be the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Sunday's season opener. The Falcons announced their decision Monday, ending a months-long competition between Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr.

The race for the Falcons' starting quarterback job between Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. is going down to the wire ahead of the season opener for the 2026 NFL season. NFL insider Jeremy Fowler provided an update during his appearance on The Insiders show via NFL Network. "I suspect as early as Monday, when Kevin Stefanski addresses the media, that he could announce this thing."
