Fantasy Football Impact

Wentz, who the Philadelphia Eagles selected with the No. 2 pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, will now play for his fifth team in as many seasons.

As NFL.com noted, a one-time Pro Bowler in five years with Philly, Wentz's days with the Eagles ended after a tumultuous 2020 season. Opportunities to start with the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders similarly fell short in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Last year, he joined the Los Angeles Rams late in the season as they were looking for a veteran backup.

He played in just one game, a Week 18 win over the San Francisco 49ers with starters on each side resting. Wentz tallied three total touchdowns in the victory.

Now, he lands with the Chiefs, the reigning NFL Champions, and joins a quarterback room led by Patrick Mahomes II and including Chris Oladokun and Ian Book.

Although he's not had consistent success as a pro, the 31-year-old Wentz has the starting experience that Oladokun and Book lack -- and that the Chiefs have long preferred.

Through parts of eight NFL seasons, Wentz has played in 95 games, posted a 47-45-1 record as a starter, and thrown for 22,292 yards, 153 touchdowns, and 67 interceptions.

The Chiefs have their next veteran backup, and Wentz has found a new home in KC.

The Fantasy Football Fallout

Wentz will become Mahomes' veteran backup at the position, apparently replacing Blaine Gabbert, who held that role last season. Gabbert is an unrestricted free agent.

Assuming everything goes according to plan, the fallout here will be minimal.

The question for fantasy managers is whether Wentz can fuel the fantasy fires of the non-Mahomes pieces we're invested in here. Given his experience, the presence of Andy Reid, and being on a team built to win, Wentz's chances of playing at a level to keep the likes of Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice, and Marquise Brown at least in viable starter territory are well within the range of possible outcomes.

It's also fair to believe Isiah Pacheco might be asked to do slightly more if Wentz is forced into the fray at any point.

Overview

As NFL.com reported, Patrick Mahomes II and the reigning Super Bowl champions have a veteran backup, and he's a former No. 2 overall pick. Carson Wentz is signing a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. He'll replace Blaine Gabbert, an unrestricted free agent who will not return. The Chiefs have preferred an experienced veteran in the No. 2 spot, with Chad Henne holding the role before Gabbert. Wentz offers plenty of experience, with 93 career starts under his belt.
