Updates from Week 2
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
Kyler Murray called this one of the best training camps of his career, saying, "This has got to be up there." He also noted this is the most comfortable he has felt in the offense. In his first preseason appearance in several years, Murray completed 7 of 8 passes for 96 yards, with the lone blemish being a poor throw directly to a defender that resulted in an interception. He said afterward, "I really enjoyed myself." Jacoby Brissett, set as the backup, entered on the third drive and went 5-of-8 for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Clayton Tune finished the game, completing 5-of-9 passes for 47 yards and one interception, and is expected to be on the practice squad.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Head coach Jonathan Gannon said the team has been "a little" mindful of James Conner's training camp workload. Conner and Trey Benson have each suggested they could be lead backs, though Gannon clarified this messaging did not originate from him and emphasized they must "compete" for their roles. Both are expected to play significant parts in offensive coordinator Drew Petzing's run-heavy scheme. Emari Demercado is currently the passing down back. DeeJay Dallas is focused on special teams as the primary kick returner but fumbled both a kickoff and a punt in the preseason opener, which Gannon said "they will correct." Michael Carter is likely headed for the practice squad again. Against Denver, Conner handled the first series with three carries for 11 yards. Benson played the second series with the starters and the third with the second team, finishing with nine carries for 29 yards and one catch for 20 yards. Demercado scored on a 43-yard reception and added three carries for seven yards. Bam Knight led the team with six carries for 51 yards.
