Friends and Football

The league entry fee is just the cover charge for the group chat.

It’s a Tuesday night in March.

Nothing is happening in the football world. Not a single snap for months.

Your phone buzzes. Then it buzzes nine more times.

The league chat is going off, and it’s not about football. Somebody dug up a photo from a draft ten years ago. Somebody else is getting roasted for the haircut in it. Or more specifically, that they had hair back then.

By the time you set the phone down, you’re standing in a dark kitchen grinning ear to ear.

I heard a guy put it perfectly once: “The league entry fee isn’t really for the league. It’s the cover charge for the group chat.”

That’s fantasy football.

He’s right. Winning is cool. Losing sucks. We all get that. We care about the trophy. We care about the bragging. We care about beating the guy who has been running his mouth since June.

But if we’re honest, the thing that keeps us coming back is each other.

We’re playing against each other. To stick together.

Here’s what I mean.

In our local league, we’ve got two guys, Tom and Derrick. One year, they made a bet. If Derrick finished the season with a better record than Tom, Derrick got to walk Tom’s mom down the aisle at Tom’s wedding.

Derrick does not beat Tom often. At least according to Tom.

That year, he did.

To this day, Tom swears Coxy, our commissioner, rigged the scoring for the final game. He has no proof. He’s taking the accusation to his grave anyway.

So Derrick walked Tom’s mom down the aisle.

Think about that.

A fantasy season helped decide who stood in one of the most personal moments of a man’s wedding. That is family. And special.

That’s what leagues do. They braid into the real stuff. The weddings, the new babies, the new jobs, the hard things, too. In some ways, football is just the excuse that keeps everybody in the same room, year after year, long after you might have otherwise faded into a couple of likes on each other’s posts.

Because as we get older, friendship gets harder to hold onto. Life fills up. Jobs, marriages, kids, a move across town for one guy and a move across the country for another. The friends we once saw constantly become the friends we keep meaning to call.

A league fixes that.

It builds a rhythm into the year. Every week, we’re all checking the scores, setting the lineups, talking the same trash. You don’t have to schedule a heart-to-heart or admit out loud that you miss anybody. You just set your lineup, and the connection rides on the back of football.

It’s especially true for men. We’re not always great at staying close on purpose. We do better with a reason, a thing to do shoulder to shoulder.

A league hands us one every week, for months, year after year.

The trash talk becomes the love language. Half of it is nonsense. But it means I’m still here, and I’m glad you are too.

This is why we do what we do.

For more than two and a half decades, Footballguys has helped people win their leagues. Rankings, projections, advice, tools—all of it. We love that part. And we’re really good at it.

But somewhere along the way, something bigger came into focus: The leagues we serve are holding people together.

So we try to tend that side, too. We’ve built a community where the first rule, since day one, has been to be excellent to one another.

But the best of it happens in your league, not ours.

It’s the seat you keep for the guy who never wins and never misses a draft. He’s not winning anything. He’s not going anywhere either.

It’s the league that honors the owner who passed away because they weren’t just a team name in the standings. They were one of yours.

It’s the son or daughter who starts showing up at the draft, first to grab snacks and laugh at the room, then one day to make a pick of their own. Before long, the league that started with college buddies or high school friends has kids in it who weren’t even born when the first draft happened.

That’s when you realize this thing has become more than a league.

It has become a table.

And I’ve always believed that if you’ve been given something good, you don’t build a taller fence around it. You build a longer table.

That’s what 25-plus years of this have been. Pulling up one more chair.

The season will end the way every season does. Somebody will lift the trophy. Somebody will swear the schedule was out to get them. (Tom remains available for comment.)

And then the football stops.

The chat won’t.

It’ll go quiet for a few weeks. Then somebody posts a photo from a draft ten years ago, and the whole thing lights up again over nothing at all.

And you’ll be standing in a dark kitchen, grinning ear to ear.

That’s the part that keeps pulling you in. The trophy goes on a shelf. The group chat goes on for life.

Best cover charge you’ll ever pay.

Here’s to friends and football.
