Updates from Week 1

Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks

It's Trevor Lawrence, and then it's everyone else. This offseason, pushing the ball downfield has been an emphasis for Lawrence, notes Jaguars Wire's Paul Bretl. During one practice this past week, Lawrence had five completions of 20-plus yards downfield, which was impressive, according to HC Liam Coen. Lawrence continues to build a strong rapport with his receivers, particularly Brian Thomas Jr. and Parker Washington, both of whom have stood out this camp. On the other side of things, Nick Mullens, currently serving as the backup quarterback, has seen better days. Mullens and the backup offense struggled against a host of starting defensive players in the group scrimmage Friday, though they were also operating with several backup offensive linemen after a surge of injuries. As for the third-string role, Carter Bradley had a great day during Friday's scrimmage and is the favorite to challenge Mullens for backup duties.

Preseason Updates: Running Backs

Following the departure of Travis Etienne Jr.. to the Saints in free agency, the Jaguars have an open spot atop the depth chart for the first time since he was drafted. Loosely locked in at the top is second-year running back Bhayshul Tuten, who seems to be making plays at nearly every practice and scrimmage session. Tuten appears to be the RB1 of the room, given the buzz he's generated from Coen, who has cited his 4.28 speed, red-zone ability, and all-purpose game as assets. However, Tuten likely won't be a workhorse back, as Coen seems to prefer a committee approach when possible. Joining Tuten in that committee should be free-agent addition Chris Rodriguez Jr., who figures to handle short-yardage and red-zone rush work, and LeQuint Allen Jr., a 2025 draft pick who has lined up on many of the third-down packages in training camp. Rodriguez started camp on PUP after offseason foot surgery but has come on strong with several "angry runs" during practices and scrimmages. SI's John Shipley noted that Rodriguez "created positive gains on every single one of his carries and churned out yards after contact easily." On the depth end, both Ameer Abdullah and J'Mari Taylor are having solid camps but sit as the RB4 and RB5, respectively, and would need injuries to crack the starting lineup.
