Updates from Week 4
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
Matthew Stafford appeared on The Ryen Russillo Show and, when asked if the Rams had extended his career, left little room for interpretation: "I don't think it; I know it did." Stafford shared that he was at a low point emotionally before the trade. Coach Sean McVay has not confirmed the backup behind Stafford, with no decision yet on whether Stetson Bennett IV or Ty Simpson will be the backup quarterback for Week 1 after Thursday night's preseason finale against the Chargers, nor has McVay committed following the Rams' announcement of their initial 53-man roster for 2026: "Obviously, we've got the reigning MVP of the league, and then we got two guys that we feel really good about. Not pigeonholing myself into any sort of decision other than I feel really good about Stetson Bennett IV, feel really good about Ty Simpson." McVay also offered praise for rookie Simpson following the preseason finale win against the Chargers: "You've really seen a lot of really good things from him in each of these last three games. I've been really pleased with Ty. He did a great job." No one projected for significant regular-season playing time appeared in Game 3.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Trust is the common theme in the Rams' backfield this preseason. Kyren Williams appeared with Michael Irvin on The White House podcast, sharing his trust in the offensive line and emphasizing the importance of putting the team first when sharing the backfield with Blake Corum. No details have emerged on the exact workload split between the top two backs; both are expected to play, and beat reporters have repeatedly emphasized Williams' value in the passing game. McVay addressed Ronnie Rivers specifically in 53-man roster takeaways — with Rivers holding his spot after Jarquez Hunter and Dean Connors generated interest from other teams — saying: "Trust is a big word. I trust Ronnie Rivers. I trust his instincts. I trust his ability to be able to be effective in pass protection, get the ball where it's supposed to go in our different run schemes, and be a functional extension of the pass game… Ronnie Rivers is a guy that you're very appreciative of." Hunter was subsequently traded to Miami.
