Scouting Report

Carsen Ryan traveled all over college football before declaring for the draft. He was originally ESPN's number three tight end and a three- or four-star recruit, depending on the site, before committing to UCLA. He split time with future NFL player Maliki Matavao and transferred to Utah after two seasons. At Utah, Ryan was their second tight end and didn't do much, so he entered the transfer portal again. He broke out as a true senior at BYU and was invited to the Hula Bowl ahead of draft season.
Ryan has the frame, hands, and willingness to be an effective blocking tight end at the next level. He brings reliable hands and a big target as a receiver, but is a little tight-hipped in his movement. Ryan lacks the long speed to threaten defenders deep down the field, but is good at finding the soft spot in the zone on shallow crossing routes. He was trusted to line up all over the field for BYU, but his limitations athletically will keep him close to the offensive line at the next level. He breaks tackles with a windshield versus bug mentality, but will occasionally throw a small juke in with limited success.

Rundown

Ryan is a floor raiser for a tight end room. He's not going to lead tight ends in receiving categories, but he can be a valuable part of a tight end rotation.

Jermane Tuman
