Bet on Jones getting traded before the midseason deadline. He had good stretches in Jacksonville in 2024 and with the 49ers in 2025.
Although the media will characterize Jones at a stage of his career where he's earning a second shot to become a franchise starter, bet on the team that trades for Jones having a different perspective. Jones will be a bridge starter for one of the several rookie QB prospects coming out in 2027 and perhaps an emergency starter in 2026.
The 49ers will only keep Jones if second-year QB Kurtis Rourke doesn't perform well during the preseason. Rourke is an underrated QB prospect who played for Kurt Cignetti during their first year at Indiana -- and played at a high level with a torn ACL. The "Shana-Clan" is enamored with Rourke.

Mac Jones has an eye on the future
Mac Jones was subject to trade rumors this offseason, but the 49ers never received an offer they couldn't refuse, electing to hang onto Brock Purdy's backup. Jones said he's "excited" to continue learning under Kyle Shanahan and will be ready when he gets his next shot at a starting job. "I'm still 27. I have some good scars and bad scars, but I know I can play," he said, noting he takes solace in how Sam Darnold turned his career around. "I feel like I can really elevate people around me. And whether that comes soon or later or never, I know I'm going to be ready for it. I hope it does happen."

San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones will likely be the first player targeted in a trade if a team loses its starting quarterback to injury, according to James Palmer of Bleacher Report.
Mac Jones focused on consistency
San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones said he has been focused on repeating his success from last season. 'But the challenge is to do it again this year and really not compare the two,' Jones said. 'Every season is different and I've learned that probably better than anybody. I feel like it's time to stack some good years here.'
