Updates from Week 2
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
Geno Smith’s lone preseason series in Seattle produced a 15-yard completion to Tre Tucker before stalling on drops. He has earned steady praise for mastering Chip Kelly’s scheme, throwing accurately, and leading effectively. Aidan O'Connell entered camp as the backup favorite but struggled in extended work (18-of-30, 205 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions) before settling down with a touchdown drive to start the third quarter. “I can’t turn the ball over, and I have to stay ahead of the sticks to help the team,” O’Connell said. Rookie Cam Miller seized his opportunity late, going 6-of-7 for 76 yards and a touchdown, highlighted by a 41-yard pump-fake strike to Shedrick Jackson. “He has all the tools to make all the throws,” Smith said. Miller’s poise and production could earn him more live reps in the No. 2 quarterback competition.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Run blocking remains a concern after ranking last in the NFL last year. The starting offensive line played only four snaps in the opener, but center Jordan Meredith and guard Jackson Powers-Johnson stayed in through the third quarter against backups and failed to create movement. Ashton Jeanty’s three carries for minus one yard reflected the blocking struggles more than his own play. “We didn’t get the kind of movement we wanted. Ashton didn’t get a chance,” Pete Carroll said. Behind Jeanty, 33-year-old Raheem Mostert entered camp as the presumptive No. 2 running back but is facing real competition. He was first up after Jeanty in Seattle and ripped off an 11-yard gain on his lone carry. Zamir White, lighter and quicker after an offseason weight drop, has looked more explosive than last year and is in the mix with Mostert and Sincere McCormick for the role. Dylan Laube is likely on the outside looking in for what will probably be four roster spots, despite special teams value.
