Updates from Week 1
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
Baker Mayfield has looked sharp, particularly connecting with Mike Evans and building chemistry with rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka. Although he missed a few days with a hand contusion, he returned to practice on Tuesday, relieving any concern. With Mayfield sidelined, Kyle Trask handled first-team duties and went 16-of-24 in his first padded practice with the starters, showing improved decision-making by avoiding turnovers. Unfortunately for him, the front office enticed veteran Teddy Bridgewater out of retirement to serve as the No. 2 quarterback.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
The team will feature its two-back system again this season, but with a change. Bucky Irving is expected to start the season as the primary back, with Rachaad White right behind him in the rotation. Irving and White split time this week, taking first-team snaps, and that pattern is expected to continue through the preseason. White has dropped to 212 pounds and appears "lighter" and "quicker," according to head coach Todd Bowles, who added, "his cuts are quicker." He continues to excel in the screen game and in pass protection—areas where his experience shows. White told reporters after practice that "the amount of touches really doesn't matter" and depends on how offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard calls plays that day. Sean Tucker has impressed coaches with his playmaking ability. He opens camp as the No. 3 running back on the depth chart and is also expected to serve as the team’s primary kick returner. Owen Wright was added for depth.
