If you made it through Sunday's games without another injury to your fantasy roster, congratulations. You're officially in the minority. Week 5 delivered another wave of injuries, including a trio of concussions, several familiar names aggravating old injuries, and enough walking boots to open a small orthopedic supply store. As always, the goal isn't to panic every time a player limps off the field, but to understand the injury, trust the data, and stay one step ahead of your league mates. Let's sort through the damage and figure out who's coming back, who's missing time, and who might be worth adding before your league mates catch on.
Key: Position Player, Team | Injury | Projected Return to Play
WR CeeDee Lamb, Dallas | Quadriceps Contusion | Projection: Week 6
CeeDee Lamb tried to gut through an injury on Thursday night after suffering a quadriceps contusion late in the game. Lamb returned to action multiple times but struggled to stay on the field, which makes sense considering quadriceps contusions can be extremely painful and make running difficult.
Historically, we've seen players miss time with quadriceps contusions, although absences are typically short, often no more than two weeks. The good news for Lamb is that playing on Thursday gives him a few extra days to recover. I suspect the 10 days between games could be enough for Lamb to suit up in Week 6. Don't panic if he misses practice or is limited early in the week, as Dallas may simply be giving the injury additional time to heal.
RB Kyle Monangai, Chicago | Turf Toe | Projection: Week 7
Kyle Monangai was already trending toward being questionable for Week 5 with a thumb injury, but Chicago threw us a curveball late in the week when the team announced that Monangai was also dealing with turf toe and would be considered "week to week."
Historically, foot and toe injuries result in roughly two weeks missed. More specifically, no RB in my database since 2017 has missed fewer than two weeks with turf toe. Given that trend, I suspect Monangai won't practice much, if at all, this week. I currently have him projected to return in Week 7, although I'm fairly split between Weeks 7 and 8. Fantasy managers should prepare for a multi-week absence. This projection also assumes that Monangai's thumb injury is relatively minor. Since Chicago announced the turf toe diagnosis, there has been little additional information regarding his thumb injury, leaving some uncertainty about whether it could further delay his return.
RB David Montgomery, Houston | Groin | Projection: Week 9
David Montgomery did not finish Sunday's game against Tennessee after suffering a groin injury. We've seen this injury quite frequently this season, and fortunately, it typically has not resulted in significant time missed.
After the game, DeMeco Ryans told reporters Montgomery is "going to miss some time," though he didn't elaborate on the injury's severity. Historically, NFL RBs miss an average of roughly two weeks with groin injuries. With Houston's Week 8 bye approaching, I wouldn't be surprised if Montgomery misses Weeks 6 and 7, gets an additional week of rest during the bye, and returns in Week 9.
Woody Marks is the waiver wire target this week.
