Updates from Week 4
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
Caleb Williams' 2026 camp hasn't been all that different than his first two seasons in the league — his highlights have been otherworldly, but his play has been inconsistent. Head coach Ben Johnson said, "I've been pretty consistent that I'm happy with where he's at. I love the approach that he takes coming in to work every day. I love his demeanor on the field. There's a level of professionalism that radiates from him," while also conceding that it's been "a little bit of a mixed bag over the last few weeks" for the first-team offense. The Bears held a brief shells-only practice early in the week before heading to Nashville for a joint practice with the Titans. Tyson Bagent returned from a hamstring injury and immediately threaded the needle between two defenders to hit Scotty Miller for a touchdown, never having lost the No. 2 spot. With Williams watching the preseason game in a T-shirt and sunglasses, Bagent got the start and looked sharp, hitting rookie receiver Zavion Thomas for a 97-yard touchdown on the first play of the game. He finished with a 156.9 passer rating, and the Bears didn't trail for the rest of the game. They’ll roll into Week 1 with Williams, Bagent, and third-stringer Case Keenum.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
One of the quietest but most significant stories from this year's camp has been the consistent trust the coaching staff has expressed in D'Andre Swift, who is set up for a career year. Johnson, who has now spent five preseasons with Swift, said, "This is the best I've seen him this time of year." Swift handled some light work early in the week, punching in a touchdown from the 14-yard line during red-zone drills, but got some time off late in the week as camp wound down. Kyle Monangai, who suffered a knee injury a couple of weeks ago, is still on the road to recovery and has yet to return to practice, making the third running back spot the most impactful storyline of the week. Many reports had Salvon Ahmed projected to make the 53-man roster, but he didn't suit up for Saturday's preseason game due to an injury of his own. Roschon Johnson got the start and looked impressive, handling 15 carries for 52 yards and a touchdown while catching two of four targets for another 11 yards. Johnson showed enough to secure a roster spot. Ahmed, unfortunately, didn’t make the final roster.
