If there's one thing we've learned heading into Week 6, it's that the NFL injury report is apparently more of a suggestion than a reliable source of information. Between cryptic TikToks, mysterious injury designations, and players being labeled "quick healers," fantasy managers have plenty to sort through before setting their lineups.
QB Jalen Hurts | 1:00 PM EST Kickoff
Easily the biggest injury news heading into Week 6 involves Jalen Hurts, who has been ruled out after being diagnosed with a blood clot. I'll be straightforward: blood clots and their medical treatment fall outside my scope of practice as a physical therapist. While I'm trained to recognize the signs and symptoms of blood clots and determine when a patient requires further medical evaluation or intervention, treating the condition itself is not something I do.
With that said, my clinical experience, combined with the research I've done this week, has led me to the following conclusion from a fantasy football perspective:
- For now, the Eagles do not plan on putting Hurts on IR.
- Hurts is on blood thinners - you cannot play contact sports on blood thinners.
- The time missed carries a wide range of outcomes.
- The estimated timeline is at minimum six weeks.
QB Caleb Williams | 1:00 PM EST Kickoff
Caleb Williams wouldn't confirm his Week 6 status to the media, but a cryptic TikTok repost has some believing he'll play. Unfortunately, my injury database doesn't factor in TikToks just yet (we're working on it). Historically, quarterbacks returning from hamstring strains average just a 5% decline in fantasy production, with only 10% performing outside their normal standard deviation. When Williams initially suffered the injury, I expected him to miss several weeks until he could comfortably scramble, extend plays, and make off-balance throws. Those abilities are essential to his game. I expect Williams to play and return to form in Week 6. He belongs in your fantasy lineups.
WR A.J. Brown | 1:00 PM EST Kickoff
According to Ian Rapoport, A.J. Brown is expected to return in Week 6 after missing four weeks with a high ankle sprain. We've only seen roughly one half of football from Brown in New England, making his role difficult to project. Historically, WRs fare better than RBs and TEs following high ankle sprains, but a moderate decline in fantasy production is still common. Between potential lingering limitations and limited chemistry with his new offense, I'd prefer a wait-and-see approach with Brown in Week 6, though I get the temptation given how long you've held onto him.
RB TreVeyon Henderson 1:00 PM EST Kickoff
TreVeyon Henderson is dealing with a high ankle sprain on the same ankle that caused him to miss Week 1, but the Patriots are optimistic because he's apparently a "quick healer." Despite practicing in a limited capacity all week, I still think he's unlikely to play in Week 6. Since 2017, only six NFL running backs have avoided missing a game with a high ankle sprain. Among those who played through the injury, snaps declined 25% and fantasy production dropped 17% on average. Given Henderson's already limited workload, I'd keep him on fantasy benches this week, quick healer or not.
WR Mike Evans | 8:15 PM EST Kickoff - MONDAY NIGHT
Mike Evans missed practice to start the week, but it's the Achilles soreness designation that concerns me most heading into Monday night. Achilles and calf issues can linger or develop into more significant problems, although this could simply be precautionary rest. Evans has a history of missing significant practice time before ultimately suiting up on game day. His track record deserves the benefit of the doubt. I expect Evans to play in Week 6, but the Achilles designation is worth monitoring.
