Scouting Report
Mark Gronowski cut his teeth at the FCS level before finishing in the Big Ten. He was a zero-star recruit, but started as a true freshman for South Dakota State in the spring 2021 season as a result of COVID. He suffered a knee injury and had to take a medical redshirt in the fall of 2021. Gronowski went on to start three more years for the Jackrabbits before transferring to Iowa ahead of the 2025 season. He won the Walter Peyton Award, was a two-time FCS National Championship MVP, and an FCS All-American in his time in college.
Gronowski is responsible with the ball, almost to a fault. He has average to slightly below average arm strength for the NFL level, and doesn't test defenses with tight windows. He was one of the best athletes on the field at the FCS level, and that got him into some bad habits of trying to extend plays with his legs that he didn't get away with at Iowa. That's not to say he can't be a weapon on the ground, just that he stayed back there too long and took too many sacks. He is a powerful rusher with surprising wiggle for a bigger player and can be part of an effective read-option offense.
Rundown
Gronowski can elevate the floor of a quarterback room with his extensive experience and requisite NFL skills, but his advanced age and lack of a distinctive strength at the next level will likely keep him in backup duties.
