Entering his 10th season, McCaffrey has good years and bad. Three elite years, three years of crushing disappointments for his fantasy managers over the last six years. A good year should be expected, but careers at his age end rapidly with poor form or more likely injury.

My No.1 overall RB last summer, McCaffrey lacked a great average on the ground, but he remained durable through 413 touches in 2025 after an Achilles issue in 2024 that derailed his season.

While turning 30 this year, McCaffrey is a dedicated athlete. He has one of the best offenses in football when his teammates are healthy. Although there is talk about limiting McCaffrey's touches, don't expect him to become a 220-attempt/60-target RB. Expect 320-350 touches as the limited range relative to 400-plus.

It means McCaffrey could experience another RB1 fantasy campaign if called upon. His floor is still good enough that I understand rationale of the individual who takes McCaffrey ahead of Gibbs and Robinson, even if I don't agree.

Resting Christian McCaffrey in practice was always the plan

Christian McCaffrey returned to practice on Sunday, his first time on the field with his teammates since Aug. 8. The running back said the time away was planned as part of his load management. "This was kind of part of the plan from the jump," McCaffrey said, via David Bonilla of 49erswebzone.com. "Was to ramp up pretty big, get 9, 10 practices in, kind of come back down, and then ramp back up so we're fresh for the duration."
