Etienne parlayed a good season in Jacksonville into a free agent contract with New Orleans. With Alvin Kamare likely to start the season injured, Etienne gets a chance to stamp his authority and earn his contract.
Jeff Blaylock
Etienne has been mired in a timeshare since landing in New Orleans. It may take injuries to Alvin Kamara and Kendre Miller to lift Etienne into a clear RB1 role.

Saints claim Audric Estimé, a possible 'telling sign' on Travis Etienne Jr.'s return
The Saints claimed RB Audric Estimé off waivers from the Browns on Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. Estimé was released by New Orleans in September.
Saints weighing whether to open Travis Etienne Jr.'s return window
Saints head coach Kellen Moore said on Monday that the team is still deciding whether to designate RB Travis Etienne Jr. for return from injured reserve this week.
Travis Etienne Jr. to IR; Moore says Kamara, Miller 'will handle that load'
Saints RB Travis Etienne Jr. is headed to injured reserve with a left hamstring injury suffered in Sunday's 35-27 loss to the Raiders, coach Kellen Moore said. Moore said Etienne will not require surgery but the injury appears significant enough to warrant a recovery period of at least four weeks. "I think Alvin and Kendre will handle that load really well," Moore said of RBs Alvin Kamara and Kendre Miller. "CJ has obviously kind of found his specific role," he added of RB CJ Donaldson, noting, "Very few times in this league is one running back gonna haul the load."
'Alvin Kamara time' with Travis Etienne Jr. headed to IR
Saints RB Travis Etienne Jr. is being placed on injured reserve, ESPN's Katherine Terrell reported on Thursday, which makes it "Alvin Kamara time in New Orleans." Etienne left Sunday's loss to the Raiders after grabbing the back of his left leg, and head coach Kellen Moore said on Monday there would be "time lost" with the hamstring injury. RB Alvin Kamara is next in line in the Saints' backfield.
