Updates from Week 2
Preseason Updates: Quarterbacks
Tua Tagovailoa got off to an electric start in camp, showing poise and full command of the offense, and most importantly, staying healthy. Through the first 12 sessions, he threw only one interception, a reflection of his efficiency and decision-making. That early momentum carried into multiple sharp practices, including a 50-yard touchdown strike to De'Von Achane, but stalled in the joint practice with the Bears, where Tagovailoa was intercepted three times, including one that would have gone for a pick-six in live action. The offense struggled to match Chicago's physicality, with penalties, rerouted receivers, and pressure disrupting rhythm. Tagovailoa rebounded in the preseason opener, completing 5 of 6 passes for 27 yards on the opening drive before giving way to the backups. Quinn Ewers, still developing in his first NFL action, went 5-of-18 for 91 yards with a 48.1 passer rating. Zach Wilson completed 5 of 9 for 96 yards, showing more decisiveness than Ewers but still lacking consistent rhythm.
Preseason Updates: Running Backs
Achane enters the season as one of the offense's cornerstones, positioned to handle the lead runner duties while remaining a top receiving target for Tagovailoa. Behind him, Jaylen Wright holds the No. 2 running back spot, but his camp has drawn mixed reviews. Coaches value his speed and ability to hit the edge, yet there are questions about whether he can consistently thrive in traffic and handle the short-yardage work that could complement Achane's skill set. Encouragingly, he found the end zone in the preseason opener but only finished with 18 yards on nine carries. Ollie Gordon II made the most of his first NFL action, showing power and agility on a rushing touchdown and a 39-yard reception that highlighted his versatility. The depth chart took a major turn when Alexander Mattison, who had been pushing for a role with a strong early camp, suffered a season-ending neck injury. In response, Miami signed Mike Boone and Aaron Shampklin, giving both veterans a chance to carve out a reserve role, with Boone's experience potentially giving him an early advantage.
