NFL Showdown can be a fickle beast. Success in these contests doesn't come from blindly following median projections, but from creating leverage and building unique rosters. Fading the most popular plays can be risky, yet the biggest edges usually come from identifying the right low-rostered pivots and pairing them creatively with the slate's juggernauts.

DraftKings' Captain slot costs 1.5x salary and pays 1.5x points on top of full PPR scoring, so the price tag you're willing to pay for that spot matters as much as who you put there. A lot of players default to the "obvious" name at Captain because it feels safe, but the safe play is usually the chalky play, and chalk alone doesn't win large field tournaments.

The advice in this article pertains predominantly to tournament lineups and strategy. For cash builds, median projections remain your best guide. For head to head contests, consider projections as well, but when two players have similar projections, side with the lower-rostered option.

Game Scripting and Roster Construction

Few Week 1 games carry as much built-in storyline as this one. John Harbaugh makes his regular season coaching debut for the Giants against the team that's beaten New York in three of the last four season openers, and across the sideline Brian Schottenheimer enters year two in Dallas with one of the more explosive passing attacks in the league still mostly intact. Vegas has the Cowboys as short road favorites, somewhere around -2.5, with the total sitting near 48.5, one of the higher numbers on the entire Week 1 board.

I think that number is fair, maybe even slightly conservative. Both quarterbacks have shown they can push the ball down the field, both secondaries have real question marks, and neither team showed much interest in playing it close to the vest this preseason. This has the look of a game that stays competitive into the fourth quarter rather than getting out of hand early, which matters for roster construction. My number: Cowboys 27, Giants 24, and I like the over more than I like either side against the spread.

Build this one close to even. A 4-2 split in either direction is defensible given the salary structure, but I wouldn't go 5-1 toward either side unless you've got a strong read on the Malik Nabers situation, which remains the single biggest variable on the board. Nabers is officially questionable as he works back from the ACL tear that ended his 2025 season in Week 4, and while he's practiced fully all week, the Giants haven't committed to playing him. This might not get sorted out until close to the 8:20 kickoff, so build with a plan for both outcomes rather than guessing early and hoping.

Injury Roundup

New York's offense took a real hit last season when Nabers went down in Week 4, and his questionable tag is the headline injury note of the week. He's logged three straight full practices, which is a good sign, but neither Nabers nor Harbaugh has been willing to commit publicly to him playing. If he's active, expect his snap count to be managed to some degree rather than a full workload out of the gate.
