Fantasy Football Impact for Ken Walker III with the Kansas City Chiefs

After nearly a decade of patchworking together a backfield made of complementary running backs, the Chiefs appear set to change their philosophy heading into 2026. Andy Reid has a history of leaning on bellcow backs: Brian Westbrook, LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles, and early-career Kareem Hunt. Since Hunt left the team in 2018, no one has replaced him. Isiah Pacheco, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Darrel Williams, Jerick McKinnon, and Damien Williams have all been serviceable in short spurts, but none have maintained any reliability or consistency.

Ken Walker III hopes to change that trend. "Follow the money" is a dangerous mantra, as many highly-compensated free agents have faceplanted throughout NFL history. But the intent of this contract is for Walker to be a featured part of the offense. Walker's history in Seattle was productive but inconsistent. While the highlights were abundant, inconsistencies pushed him into a split role with Zach Charbonnet. It made sense, as the two brought very different skill sets to the field. Walker is a big-play machine, capable of scoring from anywhere on the field. He breaks tackles, hurdles defenders, and slips out of seemingly impossible would-be tackles. Charbonnet is a versatile grinder. He's got the size and physicality to win in the short areas of the field and the soft touch to work as a receiver out of the backfield.

Walker’s big-gain hunting comes at a cost, as his tendency to bounce runs outside and seek cutback lanes often leads to negative plays. While Charbonnet doesn't possess the big-play upside of Walker, he's masterful at mitigating losses and keeping the offense on schedule. Charbonnet's career-worst success rate (47.4%) is better than Walker's best (46.4%). Among 61 running backs with 400-plus carries since 2020, Walker's success rate of 43.6% ranks 59th. From the same sample, his broken tackle rate ranks 52nd, and his yards after contact per attempt rank 50th.

Analytically, Walker's NFL efficiency profile hasn't been great. But the Chiefs are desperate for a play-making running back, and Walker brings that upside. Playing on an offense with Patrick Mahomes II should create opportunities for him to make big plays. Last year, Walker amassed 42 runs of ten-plus yards, second-most in the league behind only James Cook. His 22 rushes of 15-plus yards ranked behind only De'Von Achane. His 77 forced missed tackles were second only to Bijan Robinson. Looking at Walker's efficiency chart is a bit of a Rorschach Test. He's a massive liability in some areas and the best of the best in others. The Chiefs are pushing the chips in and hoping that the better parts of his game are on display in Kansas City.

Nits can be picked in Walker's game, and the Chiefs are potentially overpaying for the player they're getting. But just 25 years old and in a great environment, it's hard to view Walker as anything other than a top-10 running back in fantasy.
